Filte, Powtanie, Teretulnud, Pasveikinti to the Portarlington Adult Education Prospectus for our new academic year 2011/2012. Portarlington Adult Education Centre (PAEC) is located on Bracklone Street, Portarlington. At PAEC we try to make the learning experience in the centre both exciting and stimulating in the context of a second chance learning environment. The ethos of Portarlington Adult Education Centre is a dedication to the needs of its student population and a commitment to the facilitation of learning. PAEC is focused on providing opportunities for students to reach their full potential. We aim to support the adult learner by providing the highest standards of teaching by qualified, adult educators. Our overall mission is to enable participants to engage in life-long learning in an environment of mutual respect and support. In this prospectus we aim to answer many questions you will have about courses, fees, student facilities and funding mechanisms in the centre. I hope that this prospectus will give you a broad outline of our courses and I invite you to discuss them in further detail. Looking forward to meeting you!

VOCATIONAL TRAINING OPPORTUNITY SCHEME (VTOS)


The VTOS scheme is designed to provide second chance education for the long-term unemployed and other social welfare recipients.

Who is eLigibLe?
Applicants must be over 21 and in receipt of one of the following benefits for at least 6 months: > Jobseekers Allowance > Jobseekers Benefit > One Parent Family > Disability Allowance > Disability Benefit > Be signing for credits for at least 6 months > Be an adult dependant of a person eligible under the above headings

WhAT Courses Are AVAiLAbLe To VTos sTuDenTs?


All full-time courses offered at the Centre qualify for VTos: > Leaving Certificate > All FETAC programmes that are available in the Centre may be studied on a full-time basis.

What does participating on a VTos course involve?


30 hours course attendance per week, all students must be in attendance in the centre from 9.00am to 3.30pm Monday to Thursday and from 9.00am to 1.00pm on Fridays.

What benefits are available to VTos students?


Students continue to receive their Social Welfare entitlements (students in receipt of a VTOS payment are paid an allowance that is equivalent to their social welfare payments) plus these additional benefits: > No tuition fees. > All books are provided on a loan scheme. > No exam fees. > Meals and travel allowances are paid on a daily attendance basis. > An additional allowance of 20 is paid to participants who are unemployed for over a year.

All courses are subject to availability of places. Students are admitted to courses following a selection process.

Who is eLigibLe?
Anyone who has left full-time education can take part in a course being offered, but priority will be given to those with less than upper second level education. All entry is subject to interview.

Cost

For all remaining participants, full fees will be charged. BTEI courses are run on a modular basis. Full tuition cost for one module is 220 and 110 per module thereafter.

Back to Education Initiative (BTEI)

The Back to Education Initiative provides part-time further education programmes for young people and adults. The aim is to give people an opportunity to combine a return to learning with family, work and other responsibilities.

Leaving Certificate
Course Achievement

Duration: One year | Certification: Leaving Certificate

Mature students are encouraged to sit the Leaving Certificate as this course is recognised by all employers and it offers students access to further education and training, third level education and employment.

Progression
Learners may progress to FETAC Level 5 courses in our centre or to third level education and employment.

Costs
For VTOS students no tuition fees are charged and the costs of textbooks, materials and examinations are kept to a minimum. Approximate cost of 50 for materials/ resources. Students studying under BTEI may incur a cost of approximately 200 to include State Exam entry fee (due in January/February), Mock Exam Papers and Corrections Fee (due in January/February) and general resources.

Progression/Career opportunities
The General Learning Programme provides adults with a fresh start to learn basic core skills needed for employment, further study and daily life. Small group classes provide an excellent environment to learn new skills and make new friends. A high level of tutor support is available to all learners.

Course Achievement

This programme is specifically designed to develop practical administration and office skills, essential tools in the modern business world. The course has a practical focus with an emphasis on preparing graduates for further education and/or employment. The range of subjects covered ensures foundation knowledge in the traditional core subject areas and practical application of office and administration principles.

Progression
Students who have satisfied the criteria set by the CAO process for progression to third level education have in the past secured places into the National Universities of Ireland and many of the Institutes of Technology. Optional progression route to FETAC Level 6 courses.

Career opportunities
Graduates from this course have taken up various clerical, book-keeping, administrator, office support and customer service positions in the following areas amongst many others: Commercial Banking, Healthcare Administration, Local Government, Retail Sales, Telecommunications, Accountancy, Taxation, Insurance, Marketing, Human Resources and Tourism and Services Industry.

This course is designed to prepare students to work competently, safely and effectively as Health Care Support Workers in a variety of settings such as nursing homes, hospitals and home help support. It will provide Graduates with a high standard of training and assessment leading to a recognised qualification for those pursuing a career in the Healthcare Sector.

Community Care
Course Achievement

Duration: One year | semester 1: September - December | semester 2: January - March/April Certification: FETAC Level 5 Community Care (DCHCC)

The Community Care Assistant course equips students with the skills and knowledge to care for clients in a safe and hygienic environment. You will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the Care Worker and acquire practical skills for work in caring environments. You will gain an understanding of the nursing process, appreciate the models of care and develop an awareness of nursing ethics and etiquette in care situations. In addition, you will be afforded the opportunity to further your personal development and enhance your communication skills.

Course Achievement
This course is designed for learners who are interested in pursuing a career in childcare or learners who wish to pursue further studies. This course will facilitate learners who wish to care for young people in a range of settings, including nurseries, creches and playgroups. Studying towards a child care qualification is an enjoyable journey as you will get to explore all aspects of a childs development, from safety and psychology, to regulation and legislation.

Course Achievement

Duration: One year completed over 3 semesters | Part-time: Students must complete 2 modules per semester Certification: FETAC Level 5 Organic Gardening (CASHX)

This course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills in all areas of the horticulture industry and plant care. Graduates from this course can gain employment in a number of areas ranging from landscape contracting, garden maintenance, garden design, lawn care, nursery work, organic food production and more.

Employability Skills
Course Achievement

Duration: One year completed over 3 semesters | Part-time: Students must complete 2 modules per semester. Certification: FETAC Level 3 Employability Skills (3M0935)

The Employability Skills Certificate will give the student the necessary skills to apply for a job, to evaluate their skills and to identify any skills shortages. It will also provide the student with the foundation in mathematics and computer skills to progress to a Major Award in General Learning, FETAC Level 4 and Business Studies Level 5 in the Centre.

Course Achievement
The Occupational Therapist Assistant is a supporting role under the day-to-day supervision of a Registered Occupational Therapist. Once the patient has been assessed and a care plan devised, the OT Assistant may help the individual achieve practical, independent living goals such as using their walking stick correctly, dressing themselves, going shopping or preparing a meal. In addition to those with an interest in the care area, the course will be useful to those with construction and industry qualifications as they may also be qualified to carry out physical fittings and adaptations to furniture, buildings and everyday pieces of equipment to help with the rehabilitation of the patient.

Art and Design (FeTAC Level 3)

This module aims to give the student a general introduction to a variety of techniques and practices within art creativity and is suitable to anyone of any age and background. There is no entry requirement for the course and each week will cover a different aspect of the creative process in order to achieve all of the following learning outcomes: > Apply a range of art and design elements. > Use a range of materials and media. > Use a range of tools and equipment. > Demonstrate good workshop practice. > Research an idea. > Communicate ideas visually. > Solve specific design problems. > Display and present your own work. At the end of the course students will have produced a portfolio of work for assessment and receive a FETAC Level 3 Certificate. Successful students may then be able to progress to Drawing and Painting FETAC Level 4.

Drawing and Painting (FeTAC Level 4)

These modules are designed to further develop the students confidence to use drawing and painting as a means to communicate ideas visually through a variety of techniques and media. By the end of the course students should be able to: > Express ideas through mark making and painting; > Employ a variety of painting and drawing techniques; > Use a wide range of drawing and painting media; > Demonstrate a basic knowledge of subjects: natural/man made environment, the human figure. > Observe and apply colour and mark making in other craft areas; > Select and present a portfolio of work and relevant support studies for assessment. Successful students will receive FETAC Level 4 Certification and be eligible to apply for FETAC Level 5 courses in Art/Craft/Design that would eventually lead to application for third level educational opportunities on presentation of a strong body of work.

Student Facilities and Activities


Computer rooms
Two fully equipped computer rooms are available to facilitate students develop their IT skills. Each room is equipped with a printer and has access to the internet. Computers have a wide range of software and application software installed including TAS Books and Sage Quickpay. Students have access to Wi-Fi in the Centre.

FeTAC Awards night


In November/December of each academic year, the Centre acknowledges and celebrates the achievements of students who completed their studies during the previous year. Students families are invited the ceremony and FETAC awards are presented to the students.

A designated study area has been put in place in order to offer the students a quiet, undisturbed environment to facilitate there studies. Laptops can be used in this room, and internet access direct to the students laptop allows them to carry out research to aid them with their studies.

Canteen
Our superb canteen facility is the heart of Portarlington Adult Education Centre. The canteen provides the staff and students not only with delicious snacks and treats, all very competitively priced, but also a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The canteen is an area for catching up, as well as chilling out with fellow learners.

The students awards day signifies the end of the year in the Centre. Here the hard work and dedication of each individual student is recognised. It is a joyous, fun occasion for both staff and students.
