ELEMENTS OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Introduction to Civil Engineering ENGINEER:

-Prof. B.D. Sharma - PDPU

One who constructs or is in charge of engines, military works or works of public utility (e.g. bridges, roads) Construct as Engineer Military Works: MES ( Military Engineering Services) Works of Public Utility: Roads: National Highways Authority Roads & Buildings ( R & B ) Water supply and drainage systems Railways, Airports, Sea-Ports, Docks & Harbours CIVIL ENGINEERING: is that field of engineering concerned with planning, design and construction for environmental control

Introduction to Civil Engineering Development of natural resources, buildings (residential, offices commercial, industrial, warehouses, hospitals, museums, temples, tourist resorts , etc. ) 18th Century: Civil Engineering was considered as a separate field from Military Engineering. Role of Civil Engineer: 1. Surveying, planning, designing, estimation and costing, documentation, tendering, implementation and execution of structures like buildings, roads, bridges, railways, ports, airports, dams, canals, water and wastewater treatment plants, water distribution networks, and sewerage systems. 2. Use engineering principles for aesthetics, optimum, economical, and technical solutions of different problems 3. Use field experience, laboratory techniques, numerical + mathematical models, using computers + I-T

Introduction to Civil Engineering Role of Civil Engineer (contd) 4. Management of Resources , Scheduling, Operations techniques 5. Surveying and levelling, laying-out, demarcation, alignment of roads, railways, canals, tunnels, pipelines (water, gas, oil ) 6. Geotechnical investigation for design of foundation s. 7. Execute erection of building structures as per byelaws 8. Structural designs of building using safety, durability and serviceability criteria. 9. Quantity Surveying and Costing 10. Tendering and selection of contractors 11. Work execution and ensuring completion on time. 12. Real estate management and taxation

Introduction to Civil Engineering Role of Civil Engineer (contd) 13. Public utility works , public health engineering, treatment and disposal / reuse of wastewater. Waste management 14. Government projects (infrastructures) for public utility 15. Design and execution of industrial structures + foundations 16. Construction of tunnels, dams, spillways, hydropower , and thermal projects 17. Transmission line towers, telecommunication engineering projects. 18. Documenting the project progress & completion reports. 19. Quality Assurance in operations and controls. 20. Training & Development, Education, HRD / HRM

Introduction to Civil Engineering Interdisciplinary Approach: Practically all civil engineering projects the involvement of engineers of other disciplines becomes essential and mandatory viz.: Electrical engineers Air-conditioning / refrigeration engineers Elevator / Lifts Engineers Plumbing Services Engineers Electro-mechanical Engineers Erection Engineers of Pre- Engineered Building-Structures In above-mentioned disciplines, interdisciplinary trades (workers technicians, welders , fitters, etc., ) are required to be employed. Civil Engineers interact with various workforce.
