Topic: Some people say that computers have made life easier and more convenient.

Other people say that computers have made life more complex and stressful. What is your opinion? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

The computer has become one of the most important inventions in human history. While some people say that computers have provided additional convenience, other people believe that computers do little besides make life more complicated and stressful. I believe that computers have primarily provided society with advantages due to faster communication and easier access tto information. First, computers have provided faster methods of communication. With society becoming increasingly more global, computers have played a significant role in the communication systems of today. Previously, communication was restricted to methods such as mail. If a businessman travel abroad, any reports that needed to be sent were subject to potentially vast delays. With business competitiveness becoming very dependent on time, this situation was entirely unacceptable. The Internet allowed businesses instant communication. Sales personnel can send emails or instant messages to managers in any country of the world. This added efficiency makes global business possible. Second, computers have made it possible to access a large amount of information. This amount of information allows students to complete projects with relative ease. Students doing research previously had to spend long hours flipping through books in libraries. Even spending the time doing research, students may still have been unable to find the information they were searching for. However, thanks to the Internet and the computer, anyone doing research can do so from the comfort of their own home or office. Information has become available form sources such as Google with the convenience of a single click of the mouse. In conclusion, while some may argue that computers bring stress and too much complexity, but I believe they provide significant advantages. The rapid communication and vast information that they place at the fingertips of users are two reasons that computers make life both easier and more convenient.

Write a passage criticizing the tramps way of life

Write a passage criticizing the tramps way of life
Living in a community we should always have a sense of responsibility to others. But tramps are leading quite different lives: they need nobody and do not care about anything at all. Look at those tramps who are wandering in the streets. They have no homes, no wives, no children and no work. They are free from all worries and troubles. Are they hungry? They may ask you for some money or they may try any trick in the book to get it. When night falls, they may seek a certain sleeping place: in the open air, in the park, underneath the bridge or under the threshold of an abandoned house. These tramps assume no responsibility to anybody at all. They are willing to lead a selfish life, paying no interest in the others affair. Are our compatriots in dange r or are they suffering from calamity? These tramps completely remain indifferent. What do we think of these tramps? To my mind, they are merely lazy parasites on society. An individual depends closely on a community in which he is living. Happy or unhapp y he

is in need of others. He only lives half of his life if he only lives for himself. The greatest happiness of a mother is to take care of her husband and her children; and the greatest joys of a teacher are found in educating his students into useful citizens for their country. On the other hand, we are greatly indebted to our ancestors as well as to our society. In return for this great debt, we should do our best; we should devote all our energies and efforts to helping our compatriots with their dif ficulties and making our country into a wealthy and powerful one. If we had the mentality of the tramps, we should still be savages for good. To feel great sympathy for our countrymens sorrow and suffering is to create an indefinite joy for ever for our lives. We will be quite cheerful and light-hearted to enjoy the secret of our happiness and the real meaning of our lives if we live for others.

What science has done to make our lives easier and more comfortable?
What science has done to make our lives easier and more comfortable?
Nowadays science has made great progress in every aspect. More and more wonderful machines invented by scientists have rendered a mans life much easier and more comfortable. In fact, the century we are living in has been called the machine age. We feel the presence of science whenever we go. And the benefits it has brought to mankind are boundless. First, science has brought comfort to human mental life. The most wonderful invention of science is, in my opinion, the electronic computer. With lightening speed, an electronic computer can help us solve lots of thorny problems which took man quite a very long time to do with his brain. Second, science has made our material lives easier. It takes a housewife a few minutes to prepare breakfast if she has enough modern facilities. Eggs are cooking on the electric stove, bread is being toasted in an electric toaster and coffee is being made in an electric coffee maker. From the electric refrigerator she takes a can of orange juice and opens it with an electric can opener. Breakfast is ready in very short time. Third, science has brought about the shortening of space. Different means of communication and transportation have been increasingly invented and improved. We are no longer slaves to the universe as we used to be but masters of the whole air and sea areas by means of aeroplanes and steamships. In the future, we hope we will enjoy an interplanetary traveling by missiles. Telegraph, fax, radio, television are mans victories over the obstacles of time and space. Fourth, science has contributed to the mutual understanding of mankind and the prosperity of commerce and trades once the distance between nations has been shortened. The world is getting smaller and smaller. Men all over the world regardless of their races, religious and traditions need to sit closely together, discussing international affairs for the sake of peace and welfare of the world.

The important role of newspaper and magazines in our lives

The more society is developed the more means of communication are required. Among means of communication, newspaper and magazines play an important role in our lives.

Firstly, newspapers and magazines supply us with a variety of news every day. They keep us informed of the political situation of the world. By reading newspapers and magazines we can know what is happening in our country as well as in the world at large. Secondly, newspaper and magazines contribute a great deal to the development of our knowledge. Through valuable and subtle critical and commentary articles on culture, social civilization, new life style we learn a lot of interesting things. Thanks to newspapers and magazines, our mind and point of view are consolidated and enriched. When reading them we can train our reasoning power. Thirdly, through newspapers and magazines reading, we can find out what we need to know: a job in the situations vacant column, an object we want to buy in the advertising page, a missing relative in the finding missing relative column and condolence news in the agony column. Fourthly, the Police Newspapers and Magazines help us take precautious against social evils such as theft, murder, robbery, rape, gambling and smuggling. Fifthly, we can improve our English language by reading newspapers and magazines written in English. This enables us to broaden our knowledge of English in every aspect. In conclusion, well-grounded and best-selling newspapers and magazines are worth reading. They are the mouthpiece of the nation and the unseen advisers of the common people. Talk about the importance of newspaper The newspaper, today, plays a vital role in human affairs. Its importance has not been diminished by the appearance of the radio or the television. Men no longer have travel to get information. The newspaper has become the main source of information. The newspaper has become the main source of information about local and foreign affairs. Though the rad io and television convey important news and messages quicker than the newspaper, they seldom give the details of an incident. The newspaper, on the other hand, gives not only more detail about a particular incident but it also contains more new items. This is greatly important today when political changes occur with rapidity unknown before. Besides, the newspaper is easier to carry and it could be read at any time during the day. Further, the permanence of the printed word helps one to refresh ones memory of certain facts and incidents reported in the past. The importance of newspaper has been increased greatly by the spread of education. Education sharpens ones curiosity about events in distant lands and also makes one conscious of the necessity to maintain ones reading habits. In both respects the newspaper appeals most, especially if one finds little time to read books. The newspaper should, however, be read with caution, for its capacity to do harm is great. Most people believe everything that is reported by the newspaper. As a result, the newspaper exerts a profound influence on the minds of reader. Therefore, when some news is reported wrongly either by mistake or design, it may cause a lot of harm. One the other hand, if the policy of the newspaper is to promote the welfare of the people, it could do a lot of good. For example, it could exercise its influence to persuade the government of a country to do many things for the benefit of the people. In a country like Malaysia, where there are many races of people, the newspaper could also use its influence to promote good -will and harmony among the people. It is therefore important to know the policy of the newspaper that one reads. In general, however, the newspaper tries to report as accurately as possible, for there are various magazines and periodicals competing with the newspaper to provide accurate information on world developments, and it is the newspaper that links us with the outside world

Essay topic: What responsibility do societies have for the poor?

It is obvious that in our present society there are two different classes: the rich and the poor. This is the inevitable result of a long war torn country. The poor have to suffer a lot hardship and insufficiency. Therefore many organizations in our society are endeavoring to implement the following policies to relieve their sufferings. For poor people still having labor power but having no capital, the government gives them priority to borrow capital at a low interest rate. For old poor people lacking in labor powe r, the government mobilizes societies to help them and supply them with food, clothes and money. For poor and homeless people, they are allowed to live in hired apartments and in case they cannot afford to pay rental, they can be exempt from any charges. Homes for the aged were built in HCM city and in Thu Duc District to give them lodging and support in their old age. On the occasion of big ceremonies such as: May Day, Independence Day, Christmas Day, New Years Day, many societies and organizations make collections to provide them with food, money and many other essentials. Many business companies have volunteered to contribute money to Charity Funds for the poor. Living in poverty all their life, the poor and the wretched will feel less distressed if their sufferings are shared by their compatriots. A morsel when hungry is worth a parcel when full The rich living in comforts should not remain indifferent to their fellowmens misfortunes. We also wish that citizens, regardless of their class and function, would contribute something to the Relief Funds to relieve the sufferings of these unlucky people.
Advertising is all around us, it is an unavoidable part of everyone?s life. Some people say that advertising is a positive part of our lives while others say it is negative. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Give reasons for y our answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should write at least 250 words. Many people wonder about advertisement. Some people think that it has negative impact in our life. However, others said it has been playing as positive effect in this world. This is not an easy essay to be answered, but I will look at this issue. Why advertisement has been playing a negative effect in our life ? Of Course for several reasons: firstly, it motivates the psychological point in every body especially women. They will run to buy this advertised product especially if its from cosmetic roof, just to show their beauty to men, which will leads to more offender and raped cases. Secondly, you can sit comfortably with your family and suddenly the telephone is ringing, nothing important, rather than one of the companies try to convince you to buy one of their products. It is a real intrusive example of advertisement. Lastly, sometimes you do not have the financial ability to buy something, but with these new methods of advertisement, you will run to buy it, which will affect your budget. On the other hand, there are some good things. Such as, it compares the prices of the most of companies which benefit the consumer. Beside, it really opens our vision to see more products which we do not knowit unless TV and Radio show these things. In addition to, it cut down our daily routine to see new faces and know more language with daily update for their method of advertisement. In conclusion, as we can see there are many aspects to this essay. I feel that there is no benefit at all from advertisement, it plays on minds of people buy more thing that they do not need it at all.

Nowadays environmental problems are too big to be managed by individual p ersons or individual countries. In other words, it is an international problem. To what extent do you agree or disagree? An essential problem of the 21st century is world pollution. Currently the environment is so much contaminated that urgent measures should be taken. The single individual cannot be blamed for the world pollution, however every person should take care of his or her habitat. In addition, it is vital that environmental issues should be treated internationally.

Lately, many presentations, conferences and international summits are held regarding waste treatment, recycling, soil and water contamination. For sure joint efforts and consolidation can only help in the mutual war towards the environmental disaster, which is going on. For instance, governments should offer support to companies and organizations, involved in manufacturing, industry or agriculture in order to find environment friendly approaches. These could be special law regulations, recycling programs, helping courses in order to implement ISO certificates and many more. However, the influence of individuals over environment should not be ignored. If we do not confess that our planet is our home, we will never be able to take adequately care of it. We have to contribute every day to the preservation of nature and environment. For example, always remember to save energy by switching off lamps, computers and everything that we do not use. Our next obligation is to separate waste and throw bulk only in the designated areas. Driving vehicles can also be environment friendly. For example, we have to avoid accelerating the engines too rapidly or using the air condition in the country, where it will be better to save energy and simply open the windows. To sum up, environmental problems should be handled by local and international authorities also. Every single person should take care of environment and moreover we have to bring up our children to be conscious citizens of a clean and preserved planet. Some people think that students who dont take a break in studies between a high school and a university are at disadvantage compared to students that travel and work after high school before furthering their education. Do you agree or disagree? Nowadays, in our competitive world, to succeed, knowledge from school and university is not enough. Therefore, the student who study from the school to university get benefit less and contribute less too, than those of student who go to travel or job and get experience and skills before going high. There are two following reasons to prove for my opinion. I call the group of people who study from school to university is group A and the other group is group B.

Firstly, at school and university, what group A gain is almost theory, theory and theory. Of cou rse, theory is very neccessary, however, you cant do everything with theory. You must have praticeable experience. This is what group A lack very much. Although in the third of forth year at university, group A can be apprentices in some companies, to help them approach their future jobs, they arent trained well because of short time. And the real job is still very strange with them. After graduating, without experience, group A cant accomplish their work perfectly. On the other hand, it take them time and money to keep up with other experienced ones and may be scorned. Therefore, group A can contribute less than group B who have the most two important things: skills and experience. Secondly, as group A is contribute less, they surely get less benefit. Moreover, many companies which employ people in group A have to train them from the back-ground. These companies take this cost from group As salary to get rid of the fact that their employees may leave after being trained to other companies. So, less benefit is unavoidable and certain, Whereas group B are more loyal and effective workers. They also have useful experience and skills. Besides, their education is the same as or even higher than group A. As the result, group B get more benefit absolutely. In conclusion, I think student should go to travel or job before going high. Therefore, they cant only have basic knowledge but also skills and experience which are useful for them to get a good job and a brilliant future.

Should our school examination system be abolished ? Give reasons for your stand.

From primary school to the end of their tertiary education, students face the daunting task of preparing for examinations every single year. So much time and emotion is poured into preparing for examinations. Advocates of the system contend that annual examinations are a good way of training children for the stress of life after school - where deadlines and sales quotas need to be met, and work completed methodically and with minimum fuss. Government examinations are also said to be the necessary yardstick for measuring the capability of each person for further education or employment. Yet, are examinations an accurate yardstick? A person's true abilities may not be shown by written examinations. Take Winston Churchill, for example. He was a school dropout and yet he became one of England's greatest statesmen, a national savior in World War II. Clearly, some talents and forms of ingenuity go undetected in examinations. Another problem related to our system of examinations is that teachers become too "examorientated". They race through the syllabus so that they can cover everything in it in time for the examinations regardless of whether their students have understood the material. The weaker students often end up the victims in this race -- they are left far behind the rest of the class. They become more and more discouraged as they understand less and less of the lessons, to the point that they hardly care if they pass or fail. Sadly, this attitude will be carried with them into adult life. What about the "swots"? Well, speaking as one, I confess that I often wonder whether it is worth it. We rush from one tuition class to another and we spend most of our time studying for tests and examinations, or doing our homework. All through the school semester, we only have one thought in mind: to excel in the examinations. Is this really living? A related point is that some students are so occupied with their studies that they do not develop their potential in other fields. It is true that there are many clubs and societies in the school. However, many students just do not have the time to make full use of these extracurricular activities. They have to study, study, study. So, our emphasis on examinations is indirectly producing people who are only trained to study and reproduce facts rather than well-rounded individuals. In conclusion, while I realize that it will be impossible to do away with all examinations, I feel that they should be given less importance within the school system. For example, instead of basing entry qualifications on one examination, students should also be evaluated through the cumulative marks of tests and assignments. Furthermore educationists, employers, parents and the students themselves should always be reminded that the results of examinations are not equal to the sum of the net worth of the individual.

Even though globalization affects the world s economies in a very positive way, its negative side should not be forgotten. Discuss. Globalization is such a commonly used term in the twentieth century. It simply means that the world has become integrated economically, socially, politically and culturally through the advances of technology, transportation and communication. It is undeniable to say that globalization has resulted in both positive and negative effects which must be addressed accordingly. To begin with, globalization has contributed to the world s economies in many beneficial ways. The advances in science and technology have allowed businesses to easily cross over territorial boundar y lines. Consequently, companies tend to become more productive, competitive thereby raising quality of goods, services and the world s living standard.

Immigrants: Friends or Foes? sample essay

The United States of America is a country of immigrants. Almost everyone living in America has relatives in Europe, Asia, or Africa, which means we are all descendants of immigrants. Immigrants made this country prosper, and made it a superpower of the world. However, nowadays immigrants are becoming a burden for the United States, especially illegal ones. Illegals from different countries of the world have a tremendously negative impact on native Americans lives. While American legislature prohibits entering the country illegally, at the same time it authorizes banks to finance home loans for illegal immigrants! And while illegal immigrants sell their cheap labor power to not so legislative employers, highly skilled native Americans earn smaller salaries and even lose jobs. Every year around one million illegal immigrants enter the United States of America with an intention to stay here for good. This number is growing every year, unfortunately. Taking into account that some illegal immigrants have kids, some leave the country for indefinite reasons, while others die, the net population increase of illegal immigrant in the U.S. constitutes around half a million annually. Immigration and Naturalization Service reported that in 2003 there were minimum 8 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. These numbers, however, are estimates, while real numbers remain unknown; it is illegal immigration after all. The attitude of American public toward illegal immigrants is getting worse each year. There are valid reasons for such a rage. Some of the major reasons include the labor market problem, and drivers licensing sector problem. American drivers registry offices are granting drivers licenses very easily to nearly every applicant wishing to get a license. This approach is becoming an absurd, and is calling more and more protests among American public. This flaw in the licensing system is a real fortune for illegal immigrants, with the help of which they can manipulate with state legislatures, and cheat local authorities. The problem is that officers do not check current statuses of all applicants. In fact, they do not even require anything that verified applicants identity (i.e. social security number). This way, illegal immigrants can easily apply, and eventually receive drivers license. The first part of the problem is that American streets will be filling with bad drivers. If a person committed crime by entering a country illegally, then he or she might commit another crime while driving, which threatens not only his or her life, but also lives of others. The other, and more severe part of the problem, is that those illegals will use drivers licenses to apply for other more important documents. Having a drivers license would indicate their valid citizenship, which is actually fraudulent. The second complain from the public comes from the labor competition with illegal immigrants. A well skilled native-born American knows a price for his or her labor hours. Illegal immigrants from Western Europe, for instance, worked for much smaller wages in home-countries, and they wish to receive very small salaries in the U.S, because they are still higher in comparison to the ones at home. Some employers, in turn, wish to hire such workers, and pay them significantly less. This phenomenon results in smaller wages earned by native Americans. Generally, as the immigration increases supply for workers in skill category, the earning of native-born workers in that same category fall, reports Center of Immigration Studies. This way, American workers are put in such conditions that they cannot earn money for their skill, and it is the illegal immigration that is the cause of this problem. If these two major problems remain, life in the United States of America will change, and this change will be a negative one. If no immediate action is taken, streets of America will teem with potentially dangerous drivers and criminals, and average salary in skilled labor sector will drop immensely. Hence, every American as a citizen on the United States of America should understand the seriousness of the problem of illegal immigration. In lieu of hiring skilled nativeborn American workers, employees would prefer to pay less money to lower skilled illegal. Instead of financing a home loan to a model citizen, banks now exhibit tendency to finance

home loans to illegal immigrants, taking them for clients, not criminals. Instead of overhauling drivers identities, officers at drivers licensing registry offices approve every applicant and grant licenses to illegal immigrants. Although the United States of America is a country of immigrants, and was founded by immigrants, illegal immigration has become on of the major problems American society faces nowadays. Since we are citizens of the United States of America, world most powerful and most developed country, we should protect it by oppressing illegal immigration. Illegal immigrants bring unsolicited skilled labor competition, and threaten American pedestrians. In general, American society must take this issue seriously, because eventually its effects might expand to American economic and military spheres
Should wealthy nations be required to share their wealth among poorer nations by providing such things as food and education? Or is it the respons ibility of the governments of poorer nations to look after their citizens themselves? I think wealthy nations should be required to share their wealth among poorer nations. But their helping should only stop at providing such things as food and education b ecause of three following reasons.

Firstly, citizens of both wealthy nations and poorer nations are human beings. Therefore, we can not look at, hear of, and talk about people who lack food, education, etc without compassion and sympathy. Sharing wealth among poorer nations is not only a good deed but also a task itself. Secondly, many nations in Africa and Asia are very very poor. Famine, diseases, crime and illiteracy are killing their citizens. In the contrary, a lot of nations in Europe and America are too rich. If there are no actions taken, this inequality will increase dramatically. Poor countries will become more and more poorer while rich countries will become more and more richer. As a result, poorest countries will be slaves of richest countries. So, sharing wealth is an useful way to prevent people from that bad future. Thirdly, although sharing wealth among poorer nations is very necessary but this helping should only stop at providing such things as food, medicine and education. Or else, poor nations may depend on aid. They wont have enthusiasm to build their countries by themselves. Moreover, rich nations can take advantage of sharing wealth to interfere deeply in poor nations governments. This cant be considered humane action and should be prevented. In my opinion, sharing wealth among poorer nations has both bad side and good side. What we have to do is avoiding its bad side and practicing its good side.

Secondly, several companies from the more developed countries have already ventured to establish foreign operations or branches to take advantage of the low cost of labor in the poorer countries. This kind of business activity will provide more influx of cash or investment funds into the less developed countries. However, one cannot deny the negative effects which have derived from globalization. One crucial social aspect is the risk and danger of epidemic diseases which can easily be spread as the mode transportation is easier and faster in today s advance society. This is evidenced in the recent bird s flu disease which has infected most Asian countries over a short time frame. As large corporations invest or take over many off shore businesses, a modern form of colonization will also evolve which may pose certain power pressure on the local governments of the less developed countries. Unemployment rates in the more developed regions like Europe may also escalate as corporations choose to outsource cheaper work force from Asian countries. In conclusion. I like to reiterate that globalization is inevitable and we must urge individuals, companies and governments to use a more balanced approach by taking appropriate steps to deal with matters relating to the financial or economical gains verses the social, political or ecological concerns of the world.

Should Immigration Laws Be More Restrictive? In any public place nowadays we can see people of different races everywhere mostly begging or asking us to buy things we usually do not want. Should immigration laws be more restrictive? Many people say this phenomenon is irreversible and that our future is that of a multiracial, multiethnic society regardless of whether laws are changed or not. However, it is clear that we must regulate immigration in some way and try to control it before it controls us. The first reason why we should restrict immigration is that it is very often a cause of poverty: many immigrants leave their countries, their homes and sometimes their families to reach Italy, which they see as a promised land, but as soon as they arrive in our country they realise that the situation here is completely different from what they thought. Many immigrants can t find a regular job or even obtain a residence permit, so they often become poorer than they used to be when they lived in their countries. The main consequence of poverty is obviously crime, which is another good reason why immigration should be restricted. Poor immigrants must find ways to survive, so they often break the law and become criminals in order to get some money or find something to eat. However, crime is not just stealing but also working without a regular permission, and that is exactly what most of the immigrants do once they manage to reach Italy. Moreover, illegal workers are not protected by the law, so the government has no means to protect them from exploitation. The third reason why immigration laws should be more restrictive is the economical damage that an excessive emigration may cause to developing countries. Emigration, in fact, means a huge loss of workers , and it constitutes a considerable obstacle to economical and social development: it reduces the working force of developing countries, but on the other hand it doesn t strengthen the economy of the industrialised countries because the immigrants often fail to integrate themselves in a new society. Obviously these problems cannot be solved by just limiting the number of immigrants allowed to live in Italy. It is clear that immigration must be regulated more restrictively, but the criteria applied to that restriction should be based not only on quantity but also on quality: for example, examining an immigrant s social background and legal status before allowing him to live in Italy could be very useful and could also reduce the risk of crime. On the other hand, the government must make sure that the rights of the immigrants are respected, in order to improve not only their lives but also the economy of the whole country. The above quotation is rather apt in illustrating the importance of any government of a nation. This authority must surely be used in protecting our environment which is threatened today. The government has the authority to enforc e laws that help prevent further harm to the environment. It can also punish those who violate these laws. For example, the government can ban the sale of products that contain chemicals that are detrimental to the environment. It can order factories to de posit waste materials that are harmful to marine life in a safe manner. Moreover, the government can educate the general public about the necessity and ways of protecting the environment. Through the mass media and schools, it can transmit these messages on a vast scale. It is, however, wrong to say that the government is the only body that can do anything about the problem. Every single person who inhabits this earth can play a role as well. To purchase ozone-friendly products and avoid littering are onl y some of the ways. They may seem like a small effort but it takes little drops water to form a mighty ocean. Thus, it is obvious that both the government and individuals are needed to help prevent further harm to the environment. Neither the government s or individuals role is more significant than the other.

In the present age, globalization is playing an increasingly important role in our lives. But in the meantime whether it is a blessing or a curse has sparked a heated debate. Some people argue th at globalization has a fundamentally beneficial influence on our lives, while many others contend that it has a detrimental effect as well. A convincing argument can be made about globalization not only playing a pivotal role in the development of technology and economy, but also promoting the cultural exchange between different countries. To start with, it is the globalization that impelled many corporate to become an international group, thereby making a contribution to the local technology and employment . Specifically, when a multinational group establish a factory in a developing country, the new equipment, the new management skills and the job vacancies are all in the best interest of the local society. Moreover, people worldwide can get to know each other better through globalization. It is easy to see that more and more Hollywood blockbusters show cultures different from American, some recent examples are Kungfu Panda and The Mummy.

Admittedly, profit driven globalization has severely affected young people. Today, in the metropolises in different countries, it is very common to see teenagers wearing NIKE T-shirts and Adidas footwear, playing Hip-Hop music on Apple iPods and eating at KFC. The culture that took a thousand years to form just seems similar in these cities; it is looks like you can only distinguish them by their language. Meanwhile, in some developing countries, sweat workshops are always a concerning issue. For instance, reports show that some teenagers employed by NIKEs contractors w ork in smelly factories over 14 hours a day, but are only paid fifty cents per hour. In summary, I would concede that globalization does come with some adverse effects. Despite that fact, benefits created by it far outweigh the disadvantages. Overall, I am convinced that we should further promote globalization and meanwhile the local government should take measures to combat culture assimilation and sweat workshops. Globalization is such a commonly used term in the twentieth century. It simply means that the world has become integrated economically, socially, politically and culturally through the advances of technology, transportation and communication. Advertisers use all sorts of gimmicks to promote their own product. For example, fa st-food restaurants promise attractive toys and prizes in scratch and win competitions. As a result, children badger their parents to take them to that particular fast -food restaurant. Many advertisements make misleading claims and promise instant solut ions to peoples problems. For example, an advertisement may depict a pimply boy being surrounded by pretty girls as soon as he applies a particular brand of pimple cream. Though many know that this is an exaggeration, they may still cling to the hope that it may be true and rush out to buy the cream and try it out. When the claims are not matched in real life, it can cause a lot of frustration. In my view, the greatest harm advertisements cause is that they nurture superficial values in people. People lus t for products they cannot afford and some even resort to illegal ways of getting money in order to obtain them. This in turn breeds a class of snobbish people who only respect others for the material things they possess. However, advertisements are inevitable in a modern society that depends on trade and production. Advertisements inform the public about the products that are available in the market. Furthermore, advertising is a booming industry. This contributes greatly to the economy of the country. In fact, advertisements create competition among producers. As a result, they constantly try to upgrade the quality of their products and services to outdo their rivals. This also encourages creativity and talent among the advertisers. In conclusion, I feel that it would be impossible and unwise to ban advertisements. However, I feel that it is important to control their influence. The government can do so by imposing stringent rules on advertising methods.

Drop it where it belongs

Drop it where it belongs. The Ministry of Environment is gearing up its campaign on television with an advertisement accompanied by a song. The song ends with a melodious jingle called drop it where it belongs with the letters shrinking and going inside the dustbin. Environment is the surroundings such as the roads, lanes, grounds, private or government housing estates. Singapore is the worlds cleanest city and it is important that every citizen tries to maintain the record. We should make sure that all places are kept clean and tidy. Littering on roads, lanes, playgrounds or anywhere would make the places dirty. The drains should remain clean without being clogged up with waste materials or stagnant water as these are the ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes and other flies. Though the Ministry of Environment and the Community Centers arrange to maintain the housing blocks clean and tidy, it is the duty of every citizen to see that these places are not polluted by the rubbish thrown indiscriminately. That is why dustbins are provided in every nook and corner for us to throw or drop it where it belongs. The clean environment should start from our houses itself. The lef tover foodstuffs, other wastes and rubbish should be put in a plastic bag, tied and disposed through chutes. We can see the Ministry of Environment garbage trucks collecting these wastes daily. Since we have been provided with so many facilities, we should try our best to keep the city clean. Our Government periodically launches clean environment campaigns to make every citizen aware of the value of a dust-free, pollution-free, clean, neat and tidy country. Strict measures, such as heavy fines for littering may achieve this purpose. But it is the citizens who are reminded of their responsibility to keep a pollution -free environment for a healthy and comfortable lifestyle in Singapore.
