The fun starts before you even get there, but you are probably going to need your New Mexico roadmap. First, drive up on what is called The High Road to Taos that scenic byway north of Santa Fe on NM 503 towards Namb, Chimayo, Truchas, Las Trampas, and Ranchos de Taos. The road passes several 18thcentury missions. In particular, get out of that automobile and visit El Santuario de Chimayo. Quietly sit in a pew for a while. It doesnt matter what you might bring with you by way of a spiritual presence, just sitting there is a transformative experience. Dont forget to go in the rooms just to the left of the altar. The well (that hole in the dirt floor) is said to refill itself every

Just south of Taos, the church at Ranchos de Taos, San Francisco de Asis, is one of the most recognizable churches in America, having been painted and photographed thousands of times by such as Georgia OKeeffe and Ansel Adams. If possible, spend a night or two in downtown Taos. I love walking through all that history: the storied homes, the museums, the plaza, the organic shapes of adobe buildings. Dont forget Taos Pueblo either. There is another magical thing about Taos: how it has inspired artists. Their breathtaking work can be viewed with a pass to five museums for $25. If you are there for more than one day, consider doing it. And then there is the Enchanted Circle. This scenic byway begins and ends in Taos, encircling 13,161-foot Wheeler Peak the highest mountain in the state. All in all, this is one of the most beautiful drives in New Mexico... especially in the fall. On the way home, take the low road, NM 58 along the Rio Grande. The History Channel On Sept. 4, 1886, Geronimo, the wiliest and most dangerous Apache warrior of his time, finally surrenders in Skeleton Canyon, Ariz. Geronimo never learned to use a gun, yet he armed his men with the best modern rifles he could obtain and even used field glasses to aid reconnaissance during his campaigns. On Sept. 5, 1958, Boris Pasternaks romantic novel Dr. Zhivago is published in the United States. The book infuriated Soviet officials, but admirers of Pasternaks work began to smuggle the manuscript out of Russia piece by piece. On Sept. 6, 1847, writer Henry David Thoreau moves in with Ralph Waldo Emerson in Concord, Mass., after living for two years in a shack he built himself on Walden Pond. In 1854, his collection of essays, Walden, or Life in the Woods, is published. On Sept. 7, 1813, the United States gets its nickname when a New York newspaper refers to Uncle Sam. The Watergate scandal erupted after it was revealed that Nixon and his aides had engaged in illegal activities. With impeachment proceedings under way, Nixon became the first American president to resign. On Sept. 10, 1919, almost a year after the end of World War I, New York City holds a parade to welcome home Gen. John J. Pershing, commander in chief of the American Expeditionary Force, and some 25,000 soldiers who had served on the Western Front.

By Mike Dooley Every spring, thousands of homeowners flock to local nurseries to buy plants at the right time of year. But, wait a minute. Lets take a closer look. The average date of the last freeze is around April 15. Late-season freezes that can damage new spring growth can occur in early May followed closely by damaging winds and temperatures in the 90s. So why is spring is considered THE time to plant? The usual answer I hear from clients is that, if you plant in the fall, your plants may freeze in the winter. If freezing was that big of an issue, most growers would lose their stock every year because most of their plants are grown outside in above-ground containers. Ive been planting every spring and fall for 30 years, and I can tell you that I replace more dead plants from spring plantings than fall plantings.
Fall is the perfect time to plant: moderate temperatures, lack of wind and good plant prices at the nurseries.

By Matilda Charles Did you know its possible to suffer from malnutrition even if youre eating three times a day? That can happen easily to seniors who find it hard to be motivated to cook and end up just snacking throughout the day. But with a little ingenuity, its easy to fix fast, easy meals youll actually eat! Here are some ideas: Use your slow cooker. All the ingredients are assembled in the pot in the morning, and are ready by dinnertime. The variety of cookbooks on the market is amazing. Investigate ones that offer recipes with only five ingredients, diabetic recipes and meals that take less than 20 minutes to prepare. Double the amounts you prepare, and freeze the rest for days when you really dont want to cook at all. Label the container and use it within a few weeks. Ask your doctor for a referral to a nutritionist if you need help with creating a menu, portion sizes and nutritional values. If youre truly stuck in a notcooking rut, remember canned fruit and vegetables are better than none. Peanut butter on crackers with a banana offers nutrition. It takes only a few minutes to scramble eggs, add cheese and make toast.

By Tony Rizzo Jerry Lewis, who created the Muscular Dystrophy Telethon 60 years ago and has raised $2.5 billion for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, announced hed retire as goodwill ambassador for MDA next year. MDA, however, made a Jerry Lewis point to cut him loose BEFORE this years fundraiser. While Lewis can be difficult and was being paid a bundle to represent MDA, theres no denying he got the job done. Who can forget when Frank Sinatra got Lewis and Dean Martin back together on the telethon after they hadnt spoken for decades, or Liza Minnelli doing New York, New York with Sinatra, a song they both made a solo hit. MDA is gambling on a new demographic with hosts Nancy ODell, Jann Carl, Alison Sweeney and American Idol producer Nigel Lythgoe. Now called the MDA Labor Day Telethon, the six-hour fundraiser (cut down from 21 hours) airs Sunday, Sept. 4, starting at 6 p.m. Ted Danson will replace Laurence Fishburne as the new boss of CSI, which has had its share of problems since William Petersen left the show. Now with Marg Helgenberger in only a handful of episodes this season, CBS needed a big gun to fill the void. Ironically, Danson, who won two Emmy Awards during his 11year run with Cheers, comes to CSI as it starts its 12th season. His contract at CSI will allow him to continue his role in the HBO comedy Bored To Death. When he starred in the CBS series Becker he put a rinse in his hair to darken its natural white color. When he appeared in public with his white hair, people where confused. The big question now is, will we see a dark-haired Becker or a real-life whitehaired Ted Danson on CSI?

By Donna Erickson Kaleidoscopes provide children with an adventure in seeing. Heres an up-to-date version of that tube of sparkling light you can make together. 1. Save a paper towel or mailing tube. Cut a sheet of aluminum foil one inch longer than the length of the tube and one inch wider than the circumference. Roll loosely, shiny side in.
Insert it into the tube, letting it extend on both ends. Carefully unfurl, pressing ends against the outside edges of tube. 2. Cover the outside of the tube by cutting a sheet of colored adhesive-backed paper or wallpaper the exact length of the tube and 1/2 inch wider than the circumference. Adhere or glue the paper over the outside of the
tube, covering the extra foil. Decorate the paper with markers and stickers. 3. Design a colorful disk by cutting clear Con-Tact paper into two 5-inch-wide circles. Arrange assorted tiny shapes and shades of tissue paper on the sticky side of one circle. (Or, cut a sheet of tissue paper with colorful, small patterns to size, and set on the sticky side.) Top with sticky side of other matching circle. Punch a hole through the center. 4. Cut a 2-inch piece from a
flexible plastic straw with the bendable portion in the center. Tape an end portion of the straw to the outside edge of one end of the tube. Poke the other end of the straw through the hole in the disk and bend the straw piece downward. The disk will cover the tube opening and pivot around the flex straw. 5. Look through the kaleidoscope and give the disk a spin for a merry-go-round of color. NOTE: Avoid looking directly into the sun when playing with this toy.

John DeSilva, TV Host: I lived in New York City on 9/11. I went to my roof, and I watched the second plane fly into the towers. The smoke and destruction made its way into my apartment windows. My close friend, Daniel Suhr, was the first firefighter killed. A woman jumped from the building and landed directly on top of him. He was running into the building with his company and the last words he said to his men were, Boys, keep your heads up and your eyes open. This is the most dangerous job of our lives. He turned from his men and stepped toward the building and was crushed to death. All his men survived because they had to pull him out. Seven men are alive today because Danny was killed. The company that went in behind them all died. From the ashes of 9/11 rose charities and programs devoted to helping victims most affected by the attacks
By Lindsey Romain In the years following the Sept. 11 attacks, charities and funds worldwide sprung up in an effort to provide relief to victims and families affected by the tragedy. While some of these projects met goals and quietly disbanded, many continue, dedicated to assisting those who struggle with the lifelong mental health issues and financial woes stemming from the attacks. Now, 10 years later, these programs still rely on charitable donations from individuals and groups to service those in need. Here are four programs dedicated to providing relief for those suffering from the longterm effects of Sept. 11, and the ways you can help them. Tuesdays Children This family service nonprofit supports the children of Sept. 11 victims, in addition to the victims of terrorist attacks around the world. Tuesdays Children offers support in the form of mentoring programs, mental health counseling and teen and child support groups. They also offer college assistance and family engagement opportunities. By Curtis Smith Q: For the second or third year in a row, we are not getting zucchini fruits. We get lots of male flowers and rarely any female producing ones. Vickie A: There are several potential reasons your zucchini plants are not producing fruit. Many summer squash, like zucchini, have a tendency to produce mostly female flowers under conditions of high temperatures and long days, such as we are now experiencing. This means that there may be little pollen available from male flowers. High nitrogen fertility in the soil may also result in an inappropriate ratio of male to female flowers. Phosphorus fertilizer may help balance soil nutrients. High temperatures can also kill the pollen so that it cannot effectively do its job. If the bees are present and you have mostly female flowers, then you may begin to see fruit forming as temperatures decline and the days become shorter. If you do not see bees visiting the flowers, you may need to pollinate the flowers by hand. Use a small paint brush or cotton swab to transfer pollen from the male flower to the tip of the stigma (the stem-like structure in the center of the open female flower). The female flower is only open for one day, and must be pollinated early in that day before the heat can harm the pollen. These days, finding your soulmate online is just as likely as meeting the one through more traditional means. Online dating is now a widely accepted way for people to seek relationships. As is the case with many things in life, the good comes along with the bad. As the popularity of online dating has exploded, criminals are using online dating sites to scam unsuspecting individuals with high hopes for a relationship. Painting Stucco Does Not Enhance Stucco!

The only way to enhance/strengthen stucco is to fortify when mixing. Once cured the stucco is as hard as it can get. Painting traditional cement color coat(s) will eventually trap moisture. All stucco systems, regardless of finish coating will crack. A residential stucco system typically has a concrete base over a block or framed structure. The stucco system endures constant structural and ground movement, which causes cracking. No finish coating, concrete or elastomeric can completely endure this movement. Elastomeric products are designed to allow elasticity, least likely to crack. However, if the wall faults past its elasticity, it will tear, allowing moisture behind it. Also, elastomeric is moisture resistant. Not Water Proof! Therefore, with a heavy concentration of moisture, it will penetrate the paint/coating. Elastomeric was originally designed for application over a new base coat. Traditional cement color coats are designed to absorb moisture through its layer(s) to the base coats. Hence the need to evaporate quickly. When paint/elastomeric are applied directly over cement color coat(s) and moisture gets behind it (which inevitably will happen), this causes the moisture to be trapped between the paint/elastomeric and the base coat. During freeze and thaw cycles the underlying cement color coat(s) and original base coats freeze, causing delamination. This compromises the entire existing stucco system! Once compromised, the only sure remedy is to relath with a new base coat to eliminate the risk of the paint/elastomeric. A relath with a new base is typically double the cost of a regular restucco! Call me for a comprehensive estimate. My focus is to preserve your existing stucco system.

The basic difference between a foreclosure and a short sale is that a foreclosure is actually owned by a bank, in most instances. A short sale is still owned by the persons in title, usually the homeowners. Until a bank actually forecloses, the owners still own it. The main reason the bank is even involved in a short sale is to see if theyll agree to take a lesser amount than is owed to them. Will they take a payoff that is short of what is owed? This is where the words short sale come from not because it is a short process by any means. A lot of confusion and timeconsuming actions happen in a short sale because often the big bank that is servicing your loan payments, may not actually own your mortgage. Therefore, they have to get approval to accept a lesser amount than owed for the payoff (or short of the actual balance) through the investor. Confused yet? To further add to the may-

October Debit Card Law Can Cost You $$$

A short five years ago, banks were pushing us to use our debit cards. Rewards programs with points, flyer miles, cash back it all added up in our favor. Now, however, if you have a debit card thats part of a rewards program, you might have a limited amount of time to cash in those rewards. If your debit card is with a big bank, your rewards program is probably going to be cancelled. The reason for these changes, say the banks, is the Durbin Amendment. The legislation puts a cap on the per-transaction cost that banks charge merchants for each swipe of a debit card, down from 44 to 21 per swipe, plus a percentage of the transaction total. No more millions moving into card issuers hands in the form of swipe fees means no more rewards-program benefits for you. Banks are looking for new ways to recoup the lost money. If you get an information leaflet in your bank statement, read it. You could learn that your free checking account will no longer be free, or that youll need to maintain certain balances for it to be free, or that youll be limited to a certain number of debitcard transactions per month, or that your ATM transactions are no longer free. However, that same problem for card issuers might get you a discount from merchants, especially for big-ticket items. If you shop locally at smaller businesses, you have a better chance of asking for and getting a discount, since the merchant wont be paying high swipe fees and percentages of the purchase cost. Always ask. Banks and credit unions with assets less than $10 billion are exempt, and if you switch to a smaller bank, you might get a better deal on the fees. The new debit card law takes effect in October, just in time for holiday shopping.

Viagra Linked to Hearing Loss?

By George Bourne of HearMart Can Viagra make you deaf? A few weeks ago, I was at a meeting of most hearing aid manufacturers, distributors, health professionals and hearing aid engineers. A question was asked about the warning after each television commercial for Viagra, related to the potential for hearing loss with the use of the drug. I couldnt get a straight answer out of anyone at the meeting. The best I heard was, If it wasnt an issue, they wouldnt put the warning in each and every TV ad, and in their printed literature. I didnt appreciate that answer. So, I will continue to research this. At this meeting, I was asked why hearing aids in Albuquerque cost so much, and why there seemed to be a problem getting after-sale service. We all agreed that no hearing aid is worth $2,000. Yet, weve heard of people paying $3,000 $4,000 $5,000 and even more! HearMart will service any hearing aid, no matter where it was purchased. And when we work with people who pay these high prices, they are really angry and they
should be. No one likes to fall for a salesmans line of ear wax. Those high-priced hearing aids help pay for fullpage ads and TV commercials and commissions for the salesman. Today, there is very little difference between hearing aids. Realize you wouldnt purchase a hearing aid if your hearing was great. And they are called aids because that is what they do they aid, and do not restore, your hearing. An analog hearing aid makes things louder which is good if you are living in a restricted environment or have limited finances, and interacting with people is not an everyday issue. Digital hearing aids try to make things clearer. The technology is state of the art, but there is very little difference between brands.
