The Winding River Players presented their spring performance, SHORTS! to a large, lively audience at the POC on June 18 and 19. The production included four one-act comedies written by Kathryn Martin. Sue MacCallum was guest director and Diane MacQuarrie was her terrific assistant. Murder at Tea Time was set in the tea room of an inn. The plot had a number of amusing twists and turns for several eccentric characters! The play featured a detective (Ted Roupas), long-lost twins (Gwen Shafer and Sue MacCallum), an etiquette columnist (Diane MacQuarrie) and an innkeeper (George Asimos). Non-speaking red-hatter roles were

played by Barbara Berry, Connie Russell, Dee Engell and Jane Hack. A Dogs Life was set in side-by-side cages in a veterinarians office. This whimsical play featured two reincarnated dogs: a hound dog ( Joe Malinowski) and a poodle (Martha Koletar). Jocko was in hot pursuit of Fifi who danced around her cage en pointe, longing to be a ballerina. Jockos pursuit of Fifi halted abruptly when Vet Assistant ( Janet Ferraioli) produced a pair of clippers to end his roving days. Fifis fate, on the other hand, was pleasant; the assistant led her off to a grooming table. Walters Wake was set in a funeral home

run by three brothers of dubious repute ( Joe Koletar, George Asimos and Ted Roupas). A hilarious plot revealed that there had been an accidental cremation affecting the grieving family; widow (RoseMarie Fassbender), daughter (Wendy Cifelli), her husband (Bob Hack) and the deceaseds brother ( John Donavan). A surprise guest (Martha Koletar) entered and revealed that she was the deceaseds former hillbilly mistress. The very quirky mix of character types and a surprise ending further accentuated the humor. Geriathletess opening scene was set at a breakfast table. A married couple (Bill Fassbender and Nina Maurin) discussed

health issues. The doorbell rang and an old college football buddy entered ( Joe Malinowski) to go running with his friend. The two guys took off at a jog for the park. During the scene change, two ladies (Kathy Malinowski and Susan Donavan) strolled in the park. The second scene revealed a bench and a row of trees around which the out-of-shape guy struggled to keep up with his fit friend. Their efforts to outdo one another were interrupted when a cute, fit, female jogger (Gwen Shafer) entered the scene. The play ended the evening with high energy and high spirits. Cast members of all four plays then came together on stage and performed a hand jive to a recording of the 50s song Short Shorts sung

by The Royal Teens (choreographed by Gwen Shafer). The finale received a warm standing ovation from an appreciative audience. Sue MacCallum and Diane MacQuarrie wish to thank their very talented, dedicated cast and crew over thirty in all, including other volunteers who helped with ticket sales, 50/50 raffles, cast suppers and receptions together making SHORTS! a great success. Those who worked behind the scenes included Mike and Barbara Caiazza, Dave Britton, John and Wendy Cifelli, Helen Montalbano, Sharon Vinciguerra, Meg Dellinger, Jim Berry, Chris Young, Byron Price, Frank Aaron, Susan Zimmerman, Janet Ferrai-

oli, Gwen Shafer, Joe Malinowski, John MacQuarrie, Jim MacCallum and Ginger Johnson. Sue and Diane had a wonderful, joyful experience working on this project together. As a veteran actor in the Winding River Players, Diane enjoyed the unique vantage point a director has of shaping characters and giving heart and soul to a play. Sue appreciated Dianes support, talent and perspective so very much. Diane was with her every step of the way.

Traveling through

Italy

By Ed Shea and Eileen Ceponis

Ponte Vecchio Bridge in Florence

Venice by boat.

a great introduction to Italy! From then on, it was a tour that included many of the duomos for which Italy is famous. In Milan, our first stop was the Duomo di Milano, the great cathedral of a great city. Begun in 1386, construction spanned nearly six centuries. The faade is awash with magnificent sculptures, and over the years the artisans created hundreds of arches and spires that resemble perfectly honed stalagmites reaching for the heavens. The roof of the cathedral is open to the public, and it is unbelievably rewarding to walk amongst the spires and sculptures that literally surround you at every turn. And what a view of the square below and the cityscape on the horizon! Next stop: Venice! It is a wonderful city that was constructed in a lagoon that abuts the Adriatic Sea. The city stretches across 117 small islands, and was an engineering marvel. Of course, Venice is the land of canals and gondolas and thousands of tourists! We had a great time visiting the museums and churches, such as St. Marks Square and its magnificent Basilica. The nave is so beautiful that it takes ones breathe away, and its Ascension Dome is an absolute wonder. We

also crossed the Bridge of Sighs, although with construction, it was easy to miss. We traveled by boat to Venice, of course, and the view of the city is a salute to the engineers who designed it. Then we were on to tour another amazing Renaissance city, Florence. We visited several of Florences famous landmarks, including its massive white, pink and green marble Duomo with masterpieces by Gioto and Ghiberti. We visited the church of Santa Croce where the tombs of Galileo and Michelangelo are displayed, and toured the Uffizi Gallery with its amazing collection of Renaissance art. Although our itinerary did not include a visit to the Galleria Academia, where Michelangelos David is housed, our tour guide, Esther, was able to secure tickets for us. I have seen replicas of the statue before, but there is nothing like seeing the real thing. Zap was especially taken by David, but his reaction was totally unexpected. I heard him say, Here I am, barely 60 years old, yet Im a shadow of my former self. I used to be dark haired, slim, energetic, and carefree, but look at me now! And heres David, hundreds of years old, still tall, chiseled, and a lean, mean Goliath slaying machine. I guess fate has her favorites. I should have been

born Italian! Then it was on to Assisi, the birthplace of St. Francis and St. Clare. Once there, we took a guided tour of the Basilica of St. Francis, where his tomb is located. Each of the duomos we toured in Italy contained beautiful frescos and works of art by numerous Italian masters. Eileen had never seen a castle, except in Disney World, so we trudged a mile up a great hill to explore the Rocco Maggiore, a German feudal castle that dates back to 1174. The huge fortress has a commanding view of the town of Assisi, and would have presented a great photo opportunity had it not been for the weather. Sorrento held great charm, and Zap and I indulged in cappuccino and limoncello while the ladies frequented the shops. From there we boarded a ferry to the Isle of Capri, a picture-perfect example of an Italian paradise. We explored the village of Anacapri, a lovely town of shops overlooking the blue Mediterranean, and took a mini-cruise around the island. It truly was glorious, and a must-see isle. Next we had a stop at the ancient city of Pompeii, where we again had a guided

Ed, Mary, Zap and Eileen overlooking Assisi

On a lovely April morning, the Ceponis and Shea families departed from Winding River to Myrtle Beach Airport, where we caught a flight to the birthplace of the Renaissance, the beautiful land of Italy.
Our flight was thankfully uneventful, and we landed in Milan eleven hours later, where we set out to meet our tour guide. There we were, exhausted from the journey and toting our seemingly two-ton suitcases, when we spied this middleaged woman waving a green Go-Ahead tour sign. There was Esther, frizzy blonde hair blowing in the breeze, reminiscent of a yellow dust mop on steroids. Her lipstick was smeared and her blouse was half untucked from her baggy pants. There she was, running around like a chicken without a head, trying to herd 45 American tourists into a bus to take us to our hotel in Lake Como. Half in shock and weary from fatigue, I turned to Mary and asked, What in hell have you gotten me into?! Well, as it turned out, Esther Fusco, born in Uruguay and of Italian heritage, was the best darned tour guide anyone could ask for. She was intelligent, extremely knowledgeable about the country and its history, and to top it all off, possessed a wonderful sense of humor. She was a gem and we were very lucky to have her. We had seven cities to tour, and several side trips to enjoy. Our itinerary included Lake Cuomo, Milan, Venice, Florence, Assisi, Sorrento, and Rome. Our first stop was in Lake Cuomo, and it really set the tone for the trip. From our room, we had a magical view of the beautiful lake and the snow-capped Alps in the distance. The town itself provided a wonderful glimpse of what Italy must have been like decades ago. It was Italy as I hoped it would be. We all took the funicular (cable car) to the top of the mountain overlooking the town, and the view was breathtaking. Lake Como, what

Raphael, to name a few. But the one work that captured our attention was Berninis David. Yes, David drew us in again! Berninis David is about 100 years younger than Michelangelos, only about 500 years of age, but he, too, still looks fine, fit and svelte! Finally, a word about the food, and of course, the shopping; our days consisted of lunches at sidewalk cafes, dinners in quiet, small restaurants, where wine was the drink of the day, and Margherita pizzas, pasta, or fish satisfied both our appetites and our taste buds! Cappuccinos and Italian ice cream were daily treats. For shopping, many of the travelers picked up silk goods in Milan, and leather and jewelry in Florence. Many secured religious items in the Vatican. Finally it was time to leave for home. On arriving, we felt we were a little wiser and more in tune to what this wonderful world has to offer. What really brought this home was our drive back from the airport. We needed to shop for milk for the mornings coffee, so we stopped at the Wal-Mart in Shallotte. Rome one day and Shallotte the next! Now that in itself tells a story! Ciao!

The final city on our itinerary was Rome, the Eternal City. Rome is the capital of Italy, and by far its largest city with about 2.7 million citizens. Esther had resided in Rome for many years and guided us to the restaurants frequented by locals and few tourists. I do believe our finest meals were in Rome in those little hometown restaurants and cafes. We toured the ancient Coliseum, where 50,000 spectators once cheered on the Roman gladiators, and visited the ruins of the Roman Forum from where the empire was ruled. Of course, we took a guided tour of the Vatican. Everywhere we could see preparations for the Beatification of Pope Paul the II. Thousands of chairs were erected in St. Peters Square for some of the invited guests who were to attend. Surprisingly, none of us had an invitation! One would be hard pressed to find any man-made landmark as beautiful as the Vatican. St. Peters Basilica is spectacular,

both inside and out. The Sistine Chapel, with its paintings by Michelangelo depicting the creation of mankind, is only one of the highlights. Everywhere you turn in St. Peters there are spectacular works of art, and each one is different and appealing in its own way. There is a lifetimes worth of treasure to be discovered; it is a city to go back to again. In the short time we were there, we managed to visit the Spanish Steps, that monumental stairway of 138 white marble steps that brings one to the Trinita dei Monti Church at the top. The Fountain of Trevi, which is dominated by a large statue of Neptune, god of the sea, holds thousands of coins that are tossed into his fountain by tourists wishing for a return visit to Rome. I, for one, hope that my wish will someday be granted. Eileen and Zap were able to meet up with their niece who was doing a semester abroad. She was able to give them a more personal tour, sharing her knowledge of the artists and their work to further explain much of the art they saw. I cannot end this memoir without mentioning the Borghese Gallery, the last gallery we toured. The Borghese is home to hundreds of paintings and sculptures, including works by Titian, Bernini and

On July 9, the Social Committee hosted the first of two summer sippers. Event co-chairs for this sipper were Paula Tingle, Wendy Cifelli and Peggy Alexander. Nearly a hundred people attended the patriotic themed event. Centered on each dinner table was a placard with the name of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, each representing one of the original thirteen colonies. Tables were called to the buffet table in the order the states represented by the name on their placard signed the Declaration. While waiting to be called to dinner, people were challenged by a list of Our Country trivia questions. In addition to remembering or possibly learning a little history, everyone enjoyed a variety of food and beverages. Attendees brought appetizers and salads, while sandwiches, brownies and ice cream were provided by the Social Committee. Dessert was accompanied by a spectacular view of the evening sky including a gorgeous rainbow a wonderful treat for partygoers and a great way to conclude an enjoyable evening.

Question from Deb: The deer have eaten my entire sweet potato vine, Arlene, but that same vine is thriving in the common areas where Carolina Creations planted them so beautifully. Whats the secret there? Response from Arlene: About those darn deer! They were here before us and they will still be here for decades to come. Learning to co-exist with them is a challenge. Spraying keeps them at bay but there are times when you just have to shake your head, dig up whats left of the nibbled greenery and start over. There are some flowering plants that they dont seem to like the taste of, but that also changes when they cant find enough food in the woods. When its hot and dry, they come scavenging and

will nibble, pull up and eat just about anything. Deer resistant doesnt mean deer proof. Hmmm. What you are asking for is the secret for plantings that the deer may resist. The NC Cooperative Extension suggests these perennials: lantana, purple coneflower and blue star, Mexican bush sage and salvias. When it comes to annuals, they list zinnias, oriental peppers, periwinkle, vinca and wax begonias. Now that I think of it, those things can still be seen around our WR yards. Now you know why! Go to their website for more details and even a slide presentation: http://pender.ces.ncsu.edu/files/library/71/Deer%20 Resistant%20Plants2.pdf

August 2011

It is not too early to start thinking about fall planting. Heres a little advice you can use now: start watching for sales on shrubs to fill in holes in your landscape from plants that do not survive our presentdrought, despite your best recovery efforts.

The evergreens that do survive in your yard after this harsh summers stress may need pruning, moved or rearranged to make them pleasing to the eye. Dont be afraid to try.

An evergreen that sounds interesting is the Skyrocket juniper. This completely maintenance-free juniper is ideal for areas that do not provide space for a wide base tree, yet where privacy is desired. The Skyrocket juniper is a rare plant with which you achieve height without sacrificing ground space. With a mature height of over 15 feet, this tree is great for privacy screens and windbreaks. The drought resistance on this upright juniper is unmatched in its class. Once established, it is able to withstand long periods without water. The dusty blue-green color of the foliage is an attractive point for this tree. The colors remain all year without browning or fading away. The skyrocket juniper is absolutely maintenance-free, you will never have to trim, stake or prune to keep your tree looking beautiful. Skyrocket is also pest-free with no known problems or insects to infest your plant. If planted in full sun, it will continue to impress you year after year. It is, however, able to handle small amounts of shade throughout the day. Skyrocket juniper is ideal for urban gardens and spaces where a tree with a wide base is not wanted. After a month without rain and temperatures soaring, many of you might be struggling to keep your flowers blooming and your grasses green. What are your secrets? Wed like you to consider sharing some of them for our future web page. You can email them to Deb at wrplantingtips@gmail.com. Think about including some deer-nibbling prevention tips also, besides the obvious spraying, which you cant do if you are out of town!

Home Exchange Vacation

traveler

the

guests. This type of home exchange offers a social aspect to the exchange that home exchange doesnt necessarily offer. This type of exchange also means that you have a built in tour guide if thats what everyone agrees to in advance. How to get started? There are agencies that have listings of available exchanges all over the world. Their websites give information on how to get started, what you need to do, and things you need to be aware of in coming to an agreement with an exchange partner. You can browse the sites to see places and homes but to utilize the expertise of the agency to be sure you do things correctly, there is a nominal fee to join. Meg Dellinger tells me that there are 40,000 worldwide listings on the website that they use, 16,972 in Europe alone, with new listings added daily.

And in addition to the affordability, there are other benefits to home exchange. It gives you the opportunity to get a much closer look and feel at how other cultures live, giving an immersion into the area. In many instances, the exchange partners turn into lifelong friendships. Also, your home is being cared for while youre awayplants watered, cats fed, etc! Every exchange is unique and the concept relies on building a relationship of mutual trust and goodwill. To start thinking about this idea why not make a list of places youd like to go go ahead and add some places youve only dreamt about and then check out websites and I think youll be surprised that theres a home exchange possibility just right for you! Its a big, wide, wonderful, world out there!

Imagine vacationing in Ireland, Italy, Madrid or Malibu...or countless other locations around the globe. Imagine vacationing in these places, living like a native, not staying in impersonal hotels and having no cost for the accommodations. If youve fancied yourself and your family taking trips to far-off lands, but when you added up the flights, meals and accommodations, you became disheartenedtheres a way you can do it!

Welcome to the world of home exchange. The concept is exchanging homes with someone. There are over 100,000 home exchanges taking place each year. You have to be willing to allow someone to live in your home while you live in their house or apartment. If this sounds interesting to you, then you might consider this travel alternative way to have a rich, affordable travel experience. Some Winding River residents have done home exchanges and have found it to be a great experience. This summer Dianne and Bob Hey will be in France on a six-week home exchange, and in October another home exchange in Phoenix, AZ, their fourth. While theyre enjoying the French countryside, their home exchange partners will be enjoying Winding River. Dianne feels that it takes a specific type of person who is trusting (that someone will be living in their home) and willing to let go. The exchangers who have lived in their Winding River home have such wonderful things to say about our community. You might wonder what attraction there is for someone to want to come to Bolivia from tourist meccas of France, Ireland, and Phoenix. The simple answers are ocean and golf. Meg and Jerry Dellinger are also veterans of home exchange although Meg admits that their first exchange in 2007 took some time to get used to having strangers living in their home. But with taking the essential time to communicate with the

exchange partner well in advance of the exchange, a level of comfort is achieved. Meg likes the idea of stepping into someone elses lifestyle and visiting the new location as a local. Doing research about the exchange area and the exchange listings available are all part of the process of being prepared to accept or reject an offer from another exchanger. It can take upwards of nine to twelve months to find an exchange partner, communicate all particulars and come to an agreement. Basically, there are two types of exchanges: home exchange and hospitality exchange. With home exchange, people trade their homes, apartments, or condominiumseven an RV or a yacht, at a mutually convenient time to both parties. Often the owners cars are part of the exchange as well, making a car rental unnecessary. Hospitality exchanges, on the other hand, host each other in their homes at designated times. You have your exchange partner staying with you as your guest while youre at home, and then you go and stay in their home while they are home as their

Peanut noodles - behind is the corn and bean relish

2 tsp freshly minced ginger 2 pinch crushed red pepper flakes 1 cup cucumbers, sliced or julienned cup green onions, both white and green, sliced diagonally cup chopped peanuts (optional) Cook pasta per direction on the box (dont add salt to the cooking water). Drain and toss in large bowl with twotablespoons of olive oil. Set aside. Sauce: In a medium bowl, whisk the remaining oil, peanut butter, soy sauce, sesame oil, rice vinegar, brown sugar, ginger, and crushed red pepper flakes. Whisk until smooth. Pour the peanut sauce onto the pasta andtoss to coat. Addcucumbers and green onions. Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours. Pour remaining peanut sauce overpastaand top with chopped peanuts just before serving. Note: The pasta really absorbs the peanut sauce as it sets, if youd like your salad a little more moist, you may want to maketwo batches. The sauce is also good on chicken or beef strips cooked on the grill like a satay. To spice it up add more red pepper flakes or Chinese hot oil to the sauce. To make this a complete meal, serve with grilled shrimp or chicken strips. Wine coolers can be a refreshing addition to your summertime entertaining menu. Try this one now that fresh peaches are available. 3 ounces peach schnapps (you can double peach nectar instead of using schnapps) 3 ounces canned peach nectar (look in Hispanic section of grocery store) 6 ounces white wine 12 ounces lemon-lime soda Place ice cubes into two tall glasses. Combine drink ingredients, stir, and pour over ice. Garnish each glass with a thin, fresh peach slice and enjoy! Here is a very practical way to enjoy wine coolers anytime. Pour a bottle of fruity red wine into an ice cube tray and freeze for at least 48 hours or until wine is frozen. Place three or four wine cubes in a tall glass, add ginger ale and allow wine cubes to melt slightly. Add a thin slice of orange and enjoy. This recipe can also be adapted to use white wine and seltzer or lemon-lime soda.

Come one, come all theres something for everybody!

Sponsors Needed If you or anyone you know would like to be a sponsor for this event, please contact Penny Sillery or Maggie Holcomb. We have different levels of sponsorships available. Thanks to the generosity of Winding River residents, friends and local business sponsors, last years Rally for the Cure events raised over $11,000. Those funds were designated for Komen for the Cures Affiliate Networks community outreach programs. That means that 75% of those funds were committed for fighting breast cancer in our local area. By participating in one or all of our Rally activities, YOU are making a difference! Check this out: Today, nearly 75 percent of women over 40 years old now receive regular mammograms. In 1982, less than 30 percent received a clinical exam.

The 5-year survival rate for breast cancer, when caught early before it spreads beyond the breast, is now 98 percent (compared to 74 percent in 1982). The federal government now devotes more than $900 million each year to breast cancer research, treatment and prevention (compared to $30 million in 1982). Americas 2.5 million breast cancer survivors, the largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S., are a living testament to the power of society and science to save lives. If you have any questions about the 2011 Rally for the Cure events, please contact Rally Co-Chairpersons Penny Sillery or Maggie Holcomb.

Southern Comfort Homes is proud to be a hands-on residential builder with over 100 homes built on clients homesites in the plantation and beach communities of Brunswick County. In 2000, Steve Schultz moved south from Maryland to Winding River Plantation with over 20 years experience in commercial and residential construction. He started Southern Comfort Homes as a small familyowned custom homebuilder, and during the booming real estate market of the last decade added fifty exquisite custom homes throughout the Winding River community. We are proud to say we have seen Winding River grow and mature into the premier plantation of this area. Southern Comfort Homes is a full custom builder, with an unlimited building license and winner of multiple awards, including three diamonds and two gold in the local Parade of Homes. Respond-

ing to the changing real estate market, Steve designed a portfolio of value-priced homes with popular floor plans that feature custom-grade finishes. This portfolio can be viewed on the website. By remaining small and focusing on only six to 10 clients each year, Southern Comfort Homes continues to apply the quality approaches of custom building, including personal customer service, to meet the varying budgets and expectations of their clients. People will continue to relocate to Brunswick County looking to build their dream home. Southern Comfort Homes offers smart value-priced packages with the flexibility to tailor each project to the clients desires. This flexibility and lot cost approach differentiates Southern Comfort Homes from their competition in Brunswick County. We successfully compete on quality and price, and win

with our flexibility and customer care. We have a proven track record and a 10-year history building in Winding River. We build each home as if it was our own, making your building experience as enjoyable and stress free as possible. Southern Comfort Homes has been fortunate to weather through the economic slowdown in construction, and to continue to provide jobs for area subcontractors, many of whom have worked with Steve since the beginning. With prospect visits at an all-time high this spring, Steve is confident that we will all see an increase in builds over the next couple of years. This is good news for Brunswick County and for our community. When you are ready to build, go with proven winner Southern Comfort Homes, Inc. A Healthy Home is part of a nationwide crawl space encapsulation company headquartered in Cashiers, North Carolina. Art and George Pohl, owners of the local office, bring many years of construction experience to the Southport area. Art is a licensed general contractor, a Certified Mold Inspector, and has built over 2,000 homes, apartments, and townhomes in Florida and North Carolina. George has been installing crawl space encapsulation systems since 2009 in the Asheville and Southport areas, and brings a wealth of knowledge on how to handle all types of crawl space problems. Bringing a level of professionalism by being licensed by both the states of North Carolina and South Carolina, certified and trained as mold inspectors, and superior customer service sets A Healthy Home apart from other local companies that view your crawl space problems as a sideline to their other business. We have the knowledge, expertise, and commitment to ensure that the job is done right, and the application, which we recommend and you choose, is the best for your particular crawl space problem. A Healthy Home does not offer a cookie cutter fix to your

crawl space mold, mildew and moisture problems. We have many different solutions in all different price ranges to alleviate your problems. In most cases we can save you a significant amount of money depending on how far you want to go. For instance with a full encapsulation, you will gain a sanitized, temperature controlled crawl space that can add significant useable square footage to your home for storage. If you merely want to rid your crawl space of moisture, mold and mildew and improve the quality of the entire homes air, we can do that too for significantly less. We can also clean and sanitize all your exposed crawl space wood, replace your damaged insulation, and significantly reduce your utility costs. Its really up to you what you want to accomplish, and we will do an evaluation and recommendation for no cost or obligation on your part. You really cant lose by having us come out and take a look the inspection is free. There is no high pressure presentation. If we cant help you we are happy to tell you. Remember, mold is the worst indoor air pollutant today! The source mold needs to grow abundantly is moisture. So, if your crawl space is moist, it will have mold. In modern homes with moisture issues, mold becomes an epidemic. Your wooden

floor joists, sub-floor, insulation and ducting could be a breeding ground for millions of mold spores. You protect every other part of your home from moisture, while leaving the crawl space completely unchecked. At A Healthy Home we are not just a brand, but we are homeowners as well. The vision of the business came from recognizing a business that will benefit others. Our mission was created from just that. Helping families and individuals provide the healthiest breathing environment within their home is our mission. Caring that everything is done with the utmost attention to skill, information technologies and thoroughness is our goal. We always leave our customers with the peace of mind, that they have solved a major issue in their home. We believe everyone should know what is going on just below their feet. Especially since the cure for these potential problems is so available and beneficial to other aspects of the home. We can also provide you with a list of satisfied customers in the Southport area who would be more than happy to attest to our professionalism, commitment to customer satisfaction, and follow up after the installation.

To enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle, youll need to have adequate financial resources in place. And that means you must plan for the expected but prepare for the unexpected. In planning for the expected aspects of your retirement, consider these factors: Your vision of your retirement lifestyle What do you want to do during your retirement years? Spend more time with your family? Volunteer? Open your own business? Your expectations of your retirement lifestyle will dictate, to a large extent, your savings and investment strategies. Your expenses Once youve established a vision for your retirement lifestyle, you can begin to estimate the expenses you expect to incur during your retirement years. Your income You can expect to receive income from a variety of sources: Social Security, pensions, part-time employment and investments, such as your IRA, 401(k) and any taxable investment accounts you may have. Youll need to estimate about how much income all these sources could provide. Your withdrawal rate If your investments are going to provide a significant part of your retirement income, you need to carefully manage annual withdrawals from your portfolio. Your withdrawal rate is key in helping to ensure your portfolio provides for your needs as long as you need it. Your portfolio reliance rate Related to your portfolio withdrawal rate is your portfolio reliance rate how much you rely on your portfolio to provide income. For instance, if you will need $50,000 per year in retirement, and $30,000 will come from your portfolio, your reliance rate will be 60% ($30,000 divided by $50,000). Your reliance rate will help determine how sensitive your strategy might be to outside events, such as market fluctuations. While you need to be familiar with these expected elements of your retirement, you also must be prepared for the unexpected aspects, such as these: Living longer than you expect How long you can expect to live is somewhat of a mystery. If you were to live longer than you anticipate, would you be financially prepared? To help make sure your money lasts throughout your lifetime, you may need to consider investments that can provide you with a lifetime income stream. And your longevity will obviously also affect your annual portfolio withdrawal rate. Inflation At an average inflation rate of three percent, your cost of living will double in about 24 years. Thats why, even in retirement, you will need some growth-oriented investments, such as quality stocks to ensure you can maintain your desired retirement lifestyle. But if the unexpected happens, and inflation takes off at a much higher than average level, you may need to consider a greater amount of investments that offer the potential for rising income. Health care Even after youre on Medicare, which wont cover everything, you need to prepare for the unexpected, such as a lengthy illness or the need for some type of long-term care. You may also wish to self-insure to a certain extent by setting aside funds in a liquid, stable account. By positioning your investment portfolio for both the expected and the unexpected, you can go a long way toward enjoying the retirement lifestyle you seek. So plan ahead and make the necessary adjustments as time goes by.
