Quality enjoyment and fun is what every individual looks for. And what a better way to spend a relaxing day with your friends and community is near the water. This is how the Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Community and El Shaddai-Prayer Partners had last July 18-19, 2009 at Duyeo Beach, in Anmyeondo. A Holy Mass was presided by Fr. Alvin. Afterwards, everyone had plenty of entertainment, outdoor games like Cheer Competition, Pakwan Seed relay, Kiss and Pass my paper, Egg relay, and the tie break Karga mo ko baby marathon, and good food.

A Celebration of Love in the Community

This years summer outing was one of the most significant fellowships that the community had during my time as a volunteer for a number of reasons: It was a joint summer outing between Hyehwadong Filipino Catholic Community and the El Shaddai Prayer Partners, which is a sign of love and unity; In the previous years, there were heavy downpours during the outing. This year, though it was raining in other places, not in Anmyeondo; Everyone participated in the parlor games and in the impromptu beauty contest with cash prizes.thanks to KEB, our sponsor; and For the cooperation of each member present..everybody did enjoy.

The Sports and Recreation Committee had their teambuilding and outing at Chonmasan Starhill Resort in Masok last July 11 and 12, 2009. This activity aims to promote the harmonious relationship and camaraderie among the team members, as well as enjoy the beautiful scenery of the place. Everyone had fun and enjoyed the two day affair amidst the downpour of rain.

Though I was not personally present during this get-together, I could feel that everybody did enjoy every moment of it just by looking at the photos on the website and through the emails I received from those who participated. This years summer outing is indeed a celebration of love in the community. As a community, let the spirit continue to shine and animate us as we make our community more alive.

PAGNINILAY:

Sa limang linggong magkakasunod, ang magiging tuon ng ating mga pagninilay ay si Jesu-Kristo bilang Tinapay ng Buhay. Sa Linggong ito isasaad kung paanong lilingapin ni Jesus ang napakaraming nagugutom. Humigit kumulang limanlibo ang mga lalaki, kabilang dito ang mga alagad ni Jesus. Sinusundan nila si Jesus pagkatapos nilang masaksihan ang maraming pagpapagaling na kanyang ginawa. Naganap ang pagpapakain sa madla sa burol ng Tiberias. Umapaw ang pagkain. Lahat ay nakakain hanggat gusto nila. Hindi lamang nabusog at nasiyahan ang lahat; lumabis pa ang mga tinapay at isda at tinipon ito sa labindalawang bakol. Larawan ito ng kagandahang-loob ng Diyos, kung paano siyang nagdadalang-habag sa mga nangangailangan. Masasalamin din dito ang kapangyarihang taglay ni Jesus. Hindi lamang sakit ng tao ang malalapatan niya ng lunas, maging ang malawakang pagkagutom ay handa niyang tugunan. Nagbibiyaya ang Diyos sa lahat nang higit sa sapat. Mahalagang maunawaan na ang pagpaparami ni Jesus ng tinapay at isda ay naganap kasangkot ang tao. Naroon ang kanyang mga apostol tulad nina Felipe at Andres. Naroon din ang isang batang lalaki. Kahit na po halagang 200 denaryong tinapay ang bilhin ay di sasapat para makakain ng tigkakaunti ang mga tao, tugon ni Felipe kay Jesus nang subukin siya nito. Kinakatawan ni Felipe ang pagka-praktikal ng tao. Binigyang-tinig niya ang ating makitid na pag-iisip at kawalan ng pananampalataya. Inilalarawan niya ang mga pagkakataong napako tayo sa pagbibilang at

nanalig lamang sa mga bagay na nakikita, nasasalat at nasusukat. Sa kabilang banda, si Andres naman ang kumakatawan sa maliit nating pananalig sa Diyos. Mayroon po ritong isang batang lalaki na may dalang limang tinapay na sebada at dalawang isda. Ngunit gaano na ito sa ganyang karaming tao? Taglay ni Andres ang pananampalatayang maaaring lumalim. Tinuruan siya ni Jesus nang tanggapin nito mula sa batang lalaki ay mga tinapay na sebada at mga isda. Ang alay ng batang lalaki ang alay ng isang dukhamaliit at hamak subalit mula sa isang taong marunong magtiwala at manalig sapagkat may kababaang-loob. Pinaupo ni Jesus ang mga tao, kinuha niya ang mga alay, nagpasalamat sa Ama at ipinamahagi iyon sa mga tao. Hindi bat ito rin ang gagawin ni Jesus sa Huling Hapunan? Marami pa rin ang mga nagugutom ngayon. Nangako si Jesus na hindi niya tayo iiwan at pababayaan. Alam niyang bukod sa pagkain, marami pa tayong ibang uri ng pagkagutom. Nagkakaroon ng di pagkakaunawaan sa pamilya. Kinakapos sa pagmamahalan ang magkaibigan. May mga biktimang naghahanap ng katarungan. Naghahanap ang mga kabataan ng tamang paggabay at saysay sa buhay. Naghihintay ng ginhawa ang mga maysakit, matatanda at mga nangungulila. Sa atin umaasa si Jesus sa pagkakataong ito. Tayo ang maliit na batang inaasahan niyang hindi mangingiming magkaloob ng ating alay gaano man ito kaliit. Sa kamay ni Jesus, ang ating alay, gaano man hamak, ay makasasapat para sa lahat. Kasama tayo ni Jesus

CATHOLIC FAITH:

PREPRAYING These days we can pray with our readings for this weekend which are about miraculous abundance; where there was little, now there is much. Both the First Reading and Gospel SPEAK OF Gods providing literally, looking forward. There is a need and behold, something is distributed for satisfaction. We pray these days for trust in our times of need. We pray with faith for the grace to receive the Eucharist as a pledge of Jesus to com-pany us, that is literally, bread-with us. We can pray with our letting what we consider small and insignificant, to be placed in his hands and distributed to those in need. We can pray also with the histories we have of Gods abundance in being faithful, provident and nourishing in our lives. REFLECTION Elisha is a holy man and, in the chapter from which our First Reading is taken, is on a roll. He has promised that a woman who has welcomed him often to her house will have a longed-for child. He has cured another child and provided needed oil for a widow and her sons to use and sell. The story right before our reading is quite interesting too. Elisha went back to his home and there was a great famine there. His fellow prophets were sitting around hungry. Elisha asked some servants to make a soup for them all. The servant went out and while gathering herbs picked a wild vine which he put in the soup. Upon eating some, they all began to experience sickness because of the poison herb. Elisha ordered that some grains be brought and he threw them in the pot and all was well. Today we hear of a multiplication of twenty barley loaves to feed one hundred people suffering from the famine. He has to insist that his servant take the loaves and share them even though they do not appear to be enough. Elisha promises that there will be more than enough and there will be leftovers as God has promised. Elisha had received his blessing from God and walked around sharing it in pl ent y. With todays Gospel, we begin a four-Sunday reflection from Johns narrative on Jesus being the Bread of Life. He is both the provider and the provided. Todays Gospel is Johns account of the follow-up to what we heard from Marks Gospel last Sunday. The crowd has followed Jesus and the apostles to a deserted place and the journey there has rendered them hungry. All heaven is about to breakout if something isnt done. The apostles have not enough money to buy for this crowd so that each could have even a little bit. There is a tension. Johns Gospel rides easily on these apparently impossible situations. Earlier in the Gospel, Jesus was at a wedding feast when the wine

ran out, tension, what to do!!!!!. They have only five loaves and two fish, what are these among so many? Five thousand people reclined and had their fill of bread and fish, so there were fragments to be collected. Because of this sign of abundance, the people wanted to promote him as king so that they would never have to search for satisfaction and fullness again. Jesus, desiring to keep them searching in faith, slipped away and left them to experience hunger which is a tension for them, leading to faith or distraction. There are many themes in this one story, which reflect Johns Theology of Jesus. We will be hearing in the next three weeks much of Jesus as the bread of life. This story begins a long discussion about just who Jesus is. This whole chapter is not specifically about Jesus as Eucharist, but Jesus who has come to be consumed totally as the one who has been sent as the source of true life. Bread is a wonderful medium with which Jesus presents himself. He is nourishing, available, familiar, and a biblical reminder to the Jews of the abiding gift of manna when they were wandering in the desert. John uses other familiar images such as light, Water, and Shepherd to offer to his listeners and readers ways to come to believe him and believe in him. There will be more of the image of bread in weeks to come. I am moved to ponder briefly the mention of the lad who had the five loaves and two fish. What are these among so many? Jesus takes the lads meager provisions and does something great with them. If there is something of the Eucharist in these verses it is that Jesus takes our gifts, or rather that he takes the gifts we have received from him, which we experience as so limited and insignificant and gives thanks through his perfect offering. He then empowers us to receive again our lives as gifts, and our gifts as forms of bread or that which is meant for the nourishment of others. What is any one of us among so many? There is a tension then within us about inferiority of image or self. Who am I to speak of God, or teach, or do anything in Gods name? The tensions of selfimage and availability for doing his labors are solved by our belief that he did so much with so little. He took the breadliness of human flesh, of simple human companions, of the women and men who have carried on the faith before us. It is our breadliness now for which he gives thanks and which He now distributes us to those who await his coming in our own simple doings. O bless the Lord, my soul, and remember all his kindness. KARUNUNGAN:

During the coming five Sundays our readings will be from the sixth chapter of the Gospel of St. John. This is the chapter about the multiplication of the loaves and fish and the one in which the Johanine teaching on the Eucharist is given. The Chapter begins with one of the key problems that Jesus had to deal with in his ministry. "After this Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, near Tiberius, and large crowds followed him because of the miraculous signs they saw when he healed the sick." In v.14 we are told, "when the people saw this sign that Jesus had given, they said, 'this is really the prophet, he who is to come into the world.' Jesus realized that they would come and take him by force to make him king: so he fled to the hills by himself." The perennial problem of Jesus was that in his compassion he reached out to help people in their needs: he healed them and gave them food and drink. He always did these things as a sign of something greater, something higher to which he was calling people. More often than not, people missed the higher message. They just wanted to have their needs satisfied in the easiest possible way. They tended to seek him out as a magical healer and not hear the call to expansion and growth that he was making to them. Making him king would be a shortcut in solving many problems. As this same tendency exists today in all religious people, and in our practice of prayer, we will explore these issues in some depth. We will try to explain something about the human personality and show how our prayer can lead us to retardation as well as to growth. The newborn child is totally centered in itself. It's only concern is physical survival. It's own pleasure and the avoidance of pain are it's only preoccupation. It lives on the physiological level. It is totally subjective and everything else is an object for it's satisfaction. Its only concern is to get food and warmth and to avoid the pain caused by their absence. If the child is not given what it needs it will become dysfunctional. If the child is allowed to dominate all others by its needs it will also have a problem in the future. As the child grows up it begins to realize that pleasure comes not only from objects but also through people. It enters into the psycho-social level. If it smiles Mommy smiles and there is a greater warmth in her hug. There is pleasure in approval, acceptance, achievement, relationship. Here again imbalance, too much or too little, will form a dysfunctional personality. As it develops further the child becomes aware that there is something beyond things and people; there are values and ideals. It begins to learn that satisfaction has often to be denied for the sake of values. It learns that a toy belongs to someone else and that rights have to be respected. It learns a little about truth and beauty and transcendence. It learns to go beyond what is perceived by the senses. Twenty years ago, Frs. Luigi Rulla and Franco Imoda, S.J. with Sister Joyce Ridick, S.S.C of the Institute of Psychology at the Gregorian University in Rome, applied the findings of modern depth psychology to the stages of one's development and came up with a theory of the structure and content of the personality. This has become the basis on which much of the motivational testing of people entering religious life and other professions is now based. When God gives us himself, when he becomes incarnate, he first gives us ourselves. The better we understand ourselves - the temple in which the Divine dwells - and know how to live within ourselves, the better we will be able to accept that great gift of God's call in our lives and respond to it more richly. On the other hand if we are stuck in a particular stage of our development or if there are serious inconsistencies in our personalities it will be very difficult for us to accept and respond to the Divine Gift. self and the actual-self. The ideal-self is conscious and made up of a combination of values and attitudes which we believe motivate us and would at least like to think are the driving force in our lives. The actual-self comes from the needs, the predispositions to action that adhere in our very human nature. These may be either conscious or unconscious. The principal contents of the personality are values, attitudes and needs. By values we mean the ideals of life that a person proposes to live for. The central value in a person's life could, for example, be accumulation of riches or union with God. These would be very contrasting values. Attitudes are specific tendencies towards action like aggression, forgiveness, compassion, greed. Needs, as I said, are a sort of magnet that draw us towards action that inhere in the organic, emotional, and spiritual dimension of the person. Modern psychology has listed about twenty fundamental human needs; for example, the need for food, love, sex, autonomy, knowledge. The attitudes may serve to satisfy or express either needs or values. For example, I may be kind to others because I need approval (a self-centered need) or because I know the value of love (an other-centered value). For this reason the attitudes are of prime importance. They are the link between values and needs. It is in the attitudes and the behavior that they lead to that inconsistencies are most often shown. There is social consistency or inconsistency depending on whether the needs, conscious or unconscious, are compatible with both the values and attitudes of the individual. A person may express the value of love for the poor and the need to serve, but the attitude of indulgence and of avoiding all forms of suffering may be totally inconsistent with the expressed value and need. This rather technical explanation may be illustrated more simply from the Our Father. This prayer that Jesus gave us begins by setting a value, an ideal before us. "Holy be your name, Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth" After setting up this value system as priority, there is a very realistic turning to needs: "Give us today our daily bread (needs)." Our needs are of paramount importance and we cannot even aspire to transcendent values if they are not met. But our needs make us insecure and fearful, and so because of them we often infringe on the space and the rights of others. So to live with each other we need the proper attitudes. "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us." It is impossible to be transcendent (Your will be done), without enjoying basic needs, and having the proper attitudes (forgiveness). But neither can we transcend if we are totally focused on our needs and lack the right attitude (forgiveness). The Our Father is a prayer for consistency between the transcendent values, the basic needs, and the necessary attitudes. In today's Gospel story we see Jesus feeling frustrated because the people are seeking their basic needs and are failing to recognize his call for a change of attitudes and a deepening of values. In today's world we see most people turning to religion and prayer with the same mentality. A lot of our prayer is asking for God's assistance in alleviating our basic needs but there is little expression of a desire to change one's unforgiving attitudes, or to being open to the transcendent, "thy will be done." Meditation, on the other hand, is prayer without words, without focusing on any level - needs, attitudes, or values. It is a prayer of just being silently in Presence and allowing truth and consistency to gradually pervade one's being.

POEA Reminds OFWs to Protect Themselves Against Swine Flu


The rapid and worldwide spread of the A(H1N1) flu virus made the World Health Organization declare it as a global pandemic. In connection with this, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration once again issued a reminder to all overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to take extra measures to protect themselves against swine flu. Aside from protecting themselves, Jennifer Jardin Manalili, POEA Chief said that all inbound and outbound OFWs should make sure that they abide by the following reporting and monitoring arrangements: Returning OFWs/and disembarking crew shall inform their recruitment/manning agencies about their arrival in the Philippines. OFWs should stay at home (selfquarantine) for 10 days after arrival before personally reporting to the recruitment agencies. OFWs with flulike symptoms on the date of departure shall notify their respective agency and ask for postponement of deployment. If infected onsite, OFWs shall ask for assistance from the nearest Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) or Philippine Embassy or Consulate. OFWs shall report to the nearest Philippine Overseas Labor Offices, Embassy or Consulates any case of infection among other Filipino workers. In the Philippines, the public should report any known case of the flu virus to the nearest local health authority, or through the following: Bureau of Quarantine: 8322929 OP CEN HEMS: 7111001, 9157725621, 9215922361 National Epidemiology Center: 7431937 RITM: - 8072628 Ms. Manalili mentioned that OFWs should practice the advice of the Department of Health so they will not be hit by the swine flu virus. They must strengthen their immune system, maintain good personal hygiene, and practice social distancing. Recruitment agencies are also encouraged by Manalili to issue similar advisories and guidelines to their departing and returning workers and seafarers.

The said memorandum also makes the recruitment procedure and screening for the added jobs stricter. The rules of POEA said that OFWs whose jobs fall under the said category are required to go to the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) first and have their individual employment contracts verified before it can be processed by the POEA. In a circular dated June 15, 2009, POEA said, All workers hired for [the listed] position[s] will not be processed unless the individual employment contracts are verified by the POLO if bound for a country with no POLO presence." However, in cases where the host country of the outbound OFWs has no POLO, one can go to the nearest POLO or Philippine Embassy to have their work contracts verified. On the other hand the requirements for the issuance of exit clearances, individual employment contracts, processing requests, accomplished information sheets, employment visas or work permits; pre-departure orientation seminar certificates from the POEA, language orientation certificates from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and national certificates from the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (Tesda) can be found at Memorandum Circular No. 6, The new and stricter rules were created at a time of rising incidence of low and semi- skilled overseas workers that are being abused and exploited. A new memorandum from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) added 44 overseas jobs to the current list of occupations classified under the low and semiskilled category. The POEA said that Memorandum Circular No. 5 aims to strengthen the protection mechanism for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
