PAGNINILAY:

(Colosas 3:16).

CATHOLIC FAITH:
(First of two parts)

Dear Brothers and Sisters!

At the beginning of Lent, which constitutes an itinerary of more intense spiritual training, the Liturgy sets before us again three penitential practices that are very dear to the biblical and Christian tradition prayer, almsgiving, fasting to prepare us to better celebrate Easter and thus experience Gods power that, as we shall hear in the Paschal Vigil, dispels all evil, washes guilt away, restores lost innocence, brings mourners joy, casts out hatred, brings (Mt 4,1-2) us peace and humbles earthly In the New Testament, Jesus brings pride (Paschal Prconium). For this to light the profound motive for fasting, condemning the years Lenten Message, I wish to focus my reflections esattitude of the Pharisees, who scrupulously observed the pecially on the value and meaning of fasting. Indeed, Lent prescriptions of the law, but whose hearts were far from recalls the forty days of our Lords fasting in the desert, God. True fasting, as the divine Master repeats elsewhere, which He undertook before entering into His public minisis rather to do the will of the Heavenly Father, who sees try. We read in the Gospel: Jesus was led up by the Spirit in secret, and will reward you (Mt 6,18). He Himself sets into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. He fasted the example, answering Satan, at the end of the forty days for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was hunspent in the desert that man shall not live by bread alone, gry (Mt 4,1-2). Like Moses, who fasted before receiving but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the tablets of the Law (cf. Ex 34,28) and Elijahs fast beGod (Mt 4,4). The true fast is thus directed to eating the fore meeting the Lord on Mount Horeb (cf. 1 Kings 19,8), true food, which is to do the Fathers will (cf. Jn 4,34). If, Jesus, too, through prayer and fasting, prepared Himself therefore, Adam disobeyed the Lords command of the for the mission that lay before Him, marked at the start by tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, a serious battle with the tempter. the believer, through fasting, intends to submit himself We might wonder what value and meaning there is for humbly to God, trusting in His goodness and mercy. us Christians in depriving ourselves of something that in The practice of fasting is very present in the first Chrisitself is good and useful for our bodily sustenance. The tian community (cf. Acts 13,3; 14,22; 27,21; 2 Cor 6,5). Sacred Scriptures and the entire Christian tradition teach The Church Fathers, too, speak of the force of fasting to that fasting is a great help to avoid sin and all that leads to bridle sin, especially the lusts of the old Adam, and open it. For this reason, the history of salvation is replete with in the heart of the believer a path to God. Moreover, fastoccasions that invite fasting. In the very first pages of Saing is a practice that is encountered frequently and recomcred Scripture, the Lord commands man to abstain from mended by the saints of every age. So if you pray, fast; if you fast, show of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you mercy; if you want your petition to be heard, hear the petieat of it you shall die (Gn 2, 16-17). Commenting on the tion of others. If you do not close your ear to others, you divine injunction, Saint Basil observes that fasting was open Gods ear to yourself (Sermo 43: PL 52, 320. 322). ordained in Paradise, and the first commandment in this sense was delivered to Adam. He thus concludes: You shall not eat is a law of fasting and abstinence (cf. as an instrument to restore friendship with God. Such was the case with Ezra, who, in preparation for the journey from exile back to the Promised Land, calls upon the assembled people to fast so that we might humble ourselves before our God (8,21). The Almighty heard their prayer and assured them of His favor and protection. In the same way, the people of Nineveh, responding to Jonahs call to repentance, proclaimed a fast, as a sign of their sincerity, saying: Who knows, God may yet repent and "He fasted for forty days turn from his fierce anger, so that we and forty nights, perish not? (3,9). In this instance, too, and afterwards he was hungry" God saw their works and spared them.

Ang Karunungan
Bro.

attitude is a mask for a strong willed and determined person. I guess its true that life is really what you make it. Ive seen people who struggle with this discrimination. And yet I know someone who is just a high school graduate but she has been teaching English in Korea for many years. She had two main obstacles in her way, firstly, she was a Filipino living in Korea. And second, she did not even finish high school. But she has a fighter personality and she doesnt let people push her around. I like being with her. She has gotten my respect. One time, her hwanjjangnim asked her to conceal the fact that she is a Filipino. But even though she was just a high school graduate, she very stubbornly said No. Now, she is a very good teacher and she can control her students very well. She is an optimistic person who is strong and who would not let life dictate things to her.

One of the topics we talked about on the show Talk Around was prejudice. When I heard about the topic, I was surprised. It seemed kind of negative and Talk Around doesnt usually handle negative topics. They usually stick to the light and funny things about multiculturalism and globalization. But prejudice was negative at the outset. It turned out that they were actually referring to stereotypes. Although we did take on a little about prejudice. Of course the other topic that is inevitably linked to that is racism, which is a very serious topic.

I cant even begin to say how important pride is, in a multi cultural society. We need to be more assertive and demand respect from others. Well, being a Filipino living abroad, I cant say that Im not affected by racism. Its really very strong here in Korea. Some people say its We need to love ourselves more, and see what is good in ourselves so because Korea is a homogenous culture. My student told me that it was that other people may see what is good in us. because of Jung, which causes Korea to be a close - knit society. A Divergent Road
Lyn Carpio (marilyn_carpio@yahoo.com)

Our abilities as human beings are limited, and for this not all things can be done right away. There are times when we need to let go of the other in order to accommodate the other. It is, as if we emerged in an unfamiliar divergent road and need to decide which road we are going to take. Decision making is one of the hardest things here on earth. Its not easy when you have to choose between two important things. We have to consider many things, the people around us, our credibility and the feelings involved. We may hurt others feelings, but if our actions will do more benefits to a lot of people, then I think were on the right track. Sometimes we choose the wrong path and so we suffer the consequences, but thats the way it is. You have to fall many times to be able to make it to the end. As we mature we become wiser and promise ourselves to be more optimistic when deciding on something.

chose the latter, I will earn more and that will expedite my homecoming and be with my family, but my faith will suffer, that means my obligations as a Catholic may also suffer. I may not be able to fulfill my obligations and attend to the regular activities which Im used to. On the other hand I also knew that by choosing my faith will mean hurting someone who is very dear to me. I had sleepless nights, headaches and as if I was taking a roller coaster ride. I cant decide, the fact that the main reason why I left my family and came here is to earn money, but now that it is already on my hands and all what I have to do is to grab the offer. I thought for a hundred times and asked for His assistance. I cannot do it alone. For some people I may sound crazy, but I chose what I thought was the best, my faith. I chose the road less traveled by, but it gave me contentment that money cant give.

first, it will mean hurting again another person and destroying the legacy of the family that had been passed through generations to generations. Money cant buy happiness and peace of mind and I chose the latter which will be carried on and passed through my generations.

At times, my ideas and views are far-fetched but this is the way I am. My decisions during those early days of my life earned nasty comments from relatives and friends. I clung to what I believed was right and fought for it. Many times I chose the wrong road and lost my way. This led to hurting some people unintentionally but I also suffered in silence and only God knows everything that I have gone through. But because of Him, I always see hope in every struggles I encounter and I know that surrendering all the things that I cannot do because of my limitations, He will help me and There are times when we made a wrong deci- unload my heart from anxieties.
