ABSTRACT
With the increase in technology threat to personal data and national security had also increased .The methods that were developed to secure important information from outside intervention were not up to safe mark .There was a need to introduce a technology that secures our data more efficiently from unlawful intervention . Fujitsu has developed a palm vein pattern authentication technology that uses vescular patterns as personal identification data .Vein recognition technology is secure because the authentication data exists inside the body and is therefore very difficult to forge. It is highly accurate. This technology can be used in various fields like banking, hospitals, government offices, in passport issuing etc. Business growth will be achieved with these solutions by reducing the size of the palm vein sensor and shortening the authentication time. This paper is about the palm vein technology, its applications,

how this technology is applied in real time applications and the advantages of using this technology.

1. Introduction:
In the ubiquitous network society, where individuals can easily access their information any time and anywhere, people are also faced with the risk that others can easily access the same information Because of anytime this and risk, anywhere. personal

identification technology is used which includes Passwords, personal identification numbers However, and cards identification can be stolen cards. and

passwords and numbers can be guessed or forgotten. To solve these problems, Fujitsu developed four methods:fingerprints, faces, voice prints and palm veins. Among these, because of its high accuracy, contact less palm vein authentication technology is being incorporated into various financial solution products for use in public places. This paper palm vein authentication

technologies and some examples of its application to financial solutions. This paper discusses the contactless palm vein authentication device that uses blood vessel patterns as a personal identifying factor. The vein information is hard to duplicate since veins are internal to the human body. The palm vein authentication technology offers a high level of accuracy, and delivers the following results: a false rejection rate (FRR) of 0.01%, and a false acceptance rate (FAR) of 0.00008% or lower, based on Fujitsu research using the data of 140,000 palms. Several banks in Japan have used the palm vein authentication technology for customer identification since July 2004. In addition, Fujitsu has integrated the technology into the access control of electronic door lock systems. Fujitsu plans to further expand applications for this technology by downsizing the sensor and improving the verification speed. Previous papers have covered a background to biometrics and the use of fingerprints and as abiometric measure. Currently used for identity, authentication forensic purposes, biometric technologies have been broadly grouped

into four areas with several techniques ineach: 1. Hands; 2. Heads and face; 3. Other physical characteristics; and 4. Behavioural characteristics. While fingerprints are well accepted as a biometric relating to hands are, perhaps, less well known or accepted. Perhaps the best understood is palm prints. Other techniques include hand geometry and vein patterns recognition. Palm print recording and identification for law enforcement purposes has been in existence almost as long as fingerprint systems and palm prints are reported to comprise 30% of all crime scene marks1. As much as another 20% are made up of the edge of the hand, fingers between the palm and fingertips and other parts of the hand. A key driver for law enforcement agencies to adopt full-hand scan technologies is the high incidence of hand related crime scene marks2. One of the earliest AFIS systems built to support palm prints is believed to have been developed in Hungary in the early 1990s. In 1997, the technology was bought by a US measure, other techniques

company. In recent years, most AFIS vendors have added palm print records capabilities to their systems. Many law enforcement agencies are now making a significant investment in palmprint (PITO) palm identification has and signed a system, 122 for example, the UKs Police IT Organisation million agreement with Northrop Grumman for fingerprint identification technologies3. Other law enforcement agencies have made similar investments and are reporting increased crime resolution rates4. In some cases, a palm print with an area of less than one square inch is sufficient to provide a positive match5. Australia currently houses the largest repository of palm prints in the world. The Australian National Automated Fingerprint Identification System (NAFIS) stores over 4.8 million palm prints6.

for the distance and angle of the hand when it passes over the device. With the new PalmSecure PC Login Kit, logins to PCs or applications that up until now required IDs and passwords can now be done using the highly secure palm vein biometric authentication method. In recent years, as part of efforts to comply with Japan's Personal Information Protection Law and enhanced internal corporate compliance policies, it has become increasingly important to authenticate the identity of people using particular PCs in order to prevent data leaks from PCs that occur because of unauthorized access or identity fraud. In 2004, Fujitsu and Fujitsu Frontech commercialized the PalmSecure palm vein biometric authentication device. Since then, the companies have provided the technology to financial institutions and wide array of other use industries in and organizations for various

Then, each time a person logs in attempting to gain access by a palm scan to a particular bank account or secured entryway, etc., the newly captured image is likewise processed and compared to the registered one or to the bank of stored files for verification, all in a period of seconds. Numbers and positions of veins and their crossing points are all compared and, depending on verification, the person is either granted or denied access.

2.4 How Secure is the Technology? On the basis of testing the technology on more than 70,000 individuals , Fujitsu declared that the new system had a false rejection rate of 0.01% (i.e., only one out of 10,000 scans were incorrect denials for access), and a false acceptance rate of less than for

Data from people ranging from 6 to 85 years old including occupations in people in various with the accordance personal authentication was verified using the

software technology. The palm vein sensor captures an infrared ray image of the users palm. The lighting of the infrared ray is controlled depending on the illumination around the sensor, and the sensor is able to capture the palm image regardless of the position and movement of the palm. The software then matches the translated vein pattern with the registered pattern, while measuring the position and orientation of the palm by a pattern matching method.Implementation of a contactless identification system enables applications in public places or in environments where hygiene standards are required, such as in medical applications. In addition, sufficient consideration was given to individuals who are reluctant to come into direct contact with publicly used devices.

Data taken in various situations in daily life including after drinking alcohol, taking a bath, going outside and waking up. 2.5.What happens if the registered palm gets damaged? There may be a chance that the palm we had registered may get damaged then we cannot use this technology,so during the time of registration we take the veins of both the hands so that if one gets damaged we can access through the second hand. When hand get damaged upto large extent we can get veins because deeper into the hand veins are obtained. Hand Geometry Hand geometry is the most widely used of biometric technologies, has been commercially available for over 20 years. One of the first patents was registered in 1985 with the first commercial systems becoming available shortly after. Typical applications using hand geometry include access control where dirt, grease, ink or other debris would reduce the reliability of fingerprint identification, for example, oil refineries or manufacturing plants. Hand geometry is also widely used to control access to nuclear plants. San Francisco's international airport has used hand geometry systems for employee access control since 1993. Ben Gurion airport in Israel, uses hand geometry to allow trusted passengers to use express security control lanes. The US INSPASS (Immigration and Naturalization Service Passenger Accelerated Service System) system was first implemented in 1993 and used hand geometry to identify reenrolled passengers, allowing them to bypass immigration queues at several US airports17,18 Some 40,000 travellers were eventually enrolled in this programme which was later cancelled as being too expensive to maintain19, attributed largely

to the complex and extended (30 minute) enrolment time. It was superseded in 2004 by the DHS Registered Traveller Programme which requires fingerprints and iris scans. In trial at six US airports, it is planned to expand the trial to between 10 and 20 airports in 200620. The Canadian CANPASS programme, available at seven Canadian international airports also uses iris scans as the principal means of identification. Other examples of hand geometry usage is attendance recording22. A large number of US universities, colleges and day care centres use hand geometry scanning to control access to dormitories, classrooms, meal plans, libraries and so on. The U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons uses hand geometry movements 2.6. technology and control less to monitor for vein access palm

Pearson VUE worked with a vendor-independent, technology-neutral third-party company that engineers and integrates biometric identification systems for mission-critical applications, to determine an identity management technology would be the best choice for next-generation authentication. Advantages & Disadvantages 3. ADVANTAGES : In addition to the palm, vein authentication can be done using the vascular pattern on the back of a hand or a finger. However, the palm vein pattern is the most complex and covers the widest area, Because the palm has no hair, it is easier to photograph its vascular pattern . The palm also has no significant variations in skin color compared with fingers or back of the hand, where the color can darken in certain areas. Palm

vein authentication uses the vascular patterns of an individuals palm as personal identification data. Compared with a finger or the back of a hand, a palm has a broader and more complicated vascular pattern and thus contains a wealth of differentiating features for personal identification. The palm is an ideal part of the body for this technology; it normally does not have hair which can be an obstacle for photographing the blood vessel pattern, and it is less susceptible to a change in skin color, unlike a finger or the back of a hand. The deoxidized hemoglobin in the vein vessels absorb light having a wavelength of about 7.6 x 10-4 mm within the nearinfrared area. When the infrared ray image is captured, blood vessel unlike the image only the pattern containing the

deoxidized hemoglobin is visible as a series of dark lines. Based on this feature, the vein authentication device translates the black lines of the infrared ray image as the blood vessel pattern of the palm, and then matches it with the previously registered blood vessel pattern of the individual.

The SSO interface included enables users to enjoy the simplicity associated with SSO functionality while adding robust biometric authentication to enhance security and protect missioncritical information and systems. Applications 5. APPLICATIONS : This palm vein authentication technology is used in various areas for more security. The following are some of the important areas where it is used: 5.1. ATM: It is already used by the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi with ATMs and by Todholm Primary School in Scotland as a new way to pay for school meals. Fujitsu PalmSecure is the future of authentication technology and is something you will see much more of. Of the biometric solutions available to-date, palm-vein authentication offers the best accuracy and security. Blood vessel patterns are unique to each individual and, unlike fingerprints or iris scans, they do not change over time, so re-registration does not have to take place at frequent intervals. Most crucially, these vascular patterns exist inside the body, not externally. They cannot be stolen by means of photography, forgery or other Page | 11

such methods, thereby making this method of biometric authentication much more secure than others. PalmSecure technology only detects the vein patterns of living people. The scanning process is extremely fast and does not involve any contact between the sensor and the person being scanned. In addition to its security advantages, PalmSecure meets the stringent hygiene requirements of multiuser public environments In July 2004, to ensure customer security, Suruga bank launched itsBio Security Deposit the worlds first financial service to use Palm Secure . To address this, palm vein authentication has been utilized for customer confirmation of transactions at bank windows or ATMs. The smart card from the customers bank account contains the customers palm vein pattern and the matching software of the palm vein patterns. A palm vein authentication device at the ATM scans the customers palm vein pattern and transfers it into the smart card. The customers palm vein pattern is then matched with the registered vein pattern in the smart card. Since the registered Page | 12

To open a Bio-Security Deposit account, customers go to a bank and have their palm veins photographed at the counter in order to guarantee secure data management, the palm vein data is stored only on the vein data base server at the branch office where the account is opened.. In October 2004, The Bank of Tokyo launched its Super IC Card. This card combines the functions of a bankcard, credit card, electronic money and palm vein authentication. Just hold your palm over the sensor to log into PCs or applications. Once the data of your palm vein patterns is registered, the information can be used for confirming access to all other applications. It also boosts faster authentication speeds without a palm guide and greater tolerance for the distance and angle of the hand when it passes over the device. In addition the firm has made available this biometric technology with a standard device (minus mouse functionality). Both of them are available in black, white, and gray colors.

released from the smart card, the security of the customers vein pattern is preserved. In 2004, the Suruga Bank and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in Japan deployed a secured account service utilizing the contactless palm vein authentication system. Several other banks in Japan have followed suit in 2005.Fujitsu plans to develop another type of ATM for use at convenience stores in Japan, embedding the palm vein authentication sensor in the ATM. 5.2. PERSONAL COMPUTERS: In personal computers palm vein technology can applied by inserting the vein sensor inside mouse. when power is supplied to system the mouse also gets power and the sensor in the mouse will be ready to sense palm veins. When one place his/her palm the sensor sense the veins and if they are matched with the registered ones Fig:5.2 PC Sensor the system allows the person to use it. One can use this technology even to lock folders , that should be maintained as private information. Fujitsu has released the first PC mouse equipped with a palm vein biometric authentication sensor, as part of the PalmSecure PC Login Kit. With the new PalmSecure PC Login Kit, logins to PCs or applications that up until now required IDs and passwords can now be

5.3. IN HOSPITALS AND LIBRARYS: A public library in Japan is set to become the first in the world to use palmvein biometrics as a substitute for conventional library cards. The University of Tokyo hospital has taken delivery of a contactless palm vein authentication system to secure physical access to its Department of Planning, Information and Management. In recent years, palm-vein pattern recognition technology, also referred to as vascular recognition, has been refined to Page | 13

meet these concerns. The underlying technology of palm-vein biometrics works by extracting the characteristics of veins in the form of an image. The image is captured by a high performance sensor that maps the Deoxygenated hemoglobin absorbs near-infrared rays. In practice, a sensor emits these rays and captures an image based on the reflection from the palm. As the hemoglobin absorbs the rays, it creates a distortion in the reflection light so the sensor can capture an image that accurately records the unique vein patterns in a person's hand. The recorded image is then converted to a biometric template a numeric representation of several characteristics measured from the captured image, including the proximity between veins. This template is then used to compare against a user's palm scan each time they authenticate. This technology is non-intrusive: There is no need to physically touch the sensor. All users must do is to hold their hand above the sensor for less than a second. The method is also highly accurate. The International Biometrics Group (IBG), which evaluates all types of biometrics products through comparative testing, found that palm-vein technology was on par with iris scan biometrics in accuracy ratings.Palm-vein recognition technology is significantly less expensive than iris scanning technology. In fact, the only

biometric solution less expensive than palm-vein authentication is fingerprint recognition. For health care organizations, effective palm-vein recognition solutions enable accurate identification of patients, enabling them to quickly retrieve their electronic medical records when they check into a hospital. This eliminates the potential human error of pulling the incorrect record, and helping to protect patients from identity fraud attempts. Until now, there has been no biometric technology that can achieve the highest levels of security and usability at a reasonable cost. Palm-vein recognition hits that sweet spot of biometrics between security, cost, accuracy and ease of use that make it an optimal physical and IT access control solution for health care organizations. 5.4 Authentication: The palm vein pattern sensor is also used for access control units. The palm vein authentication access control device is comprised of the palm vein pattern sensor, a keypad and a small display. This device controls access to rooms or buildings that are for restricted personnel. The device consists of two parts: the palm vein sensor, plus the control unit that

adding robust biometric authentication to enhance security and protect missionFig 5.4 : Door Authentication executes the authentication processing and sends the unlock instruction. A simple configuration system can be achieved by connecting this device to the electric lock control board or electric locks provided by the manufacturer. In front of our homes we can apply this Palm vein techonolgy so that by registering the veins of our family members and relatives we can maintain high range possible security which is not through other technologies . 6. Conclusion Palm vein authentication technology offers contactless authentication and provides a hygienic and noninvasive solution, thus promoting a high-level of user acceptance. Fujitsu believes that a vein print is extremely difficult to forge and therefore contributes to a high level of security, because the technology measures hemoglobin flow through veins internal to the body. The opportunities to implement palm vein technology span a wide range of applications. Palm vein pattern authentication technology developed by Fujitsu was being used in a wide range in japan . If this technology is introduced in our country we Page | 15 critical information and systems. ATM usage can be also one example of the specific case of smart card integration. Some banks in Japan already provide this service to their customer.

Japanese recently used this technologies before front doors and getting high range security PalmSecure technology uses a near-infrared light to capture a user's palm vein pattern, generating a unique biometric template that is matched against preregistered users' palm vein patterns.
