"Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done" is more than a part of Christ's instruction teaching us how to pray. It is God's singular agenda to which He is still committed. It should likewise be ours. T. Allen Robburts +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+
SHOULDER TO SHOULDER #578 ---- 1/5/09 Title: "Tools For Navigating 2009" (Part One)

My Dear Friend and Pilgrim Partner: What a thrill to follow Jesus at a time such as this! Here we are at the beginning of another year, and everything around us seems like a whirlwind of daily challenges, important life decisions, and world events of global proportions. What a way to start 2009! My life is almost as hectic as everyone else's seems to be, and I find myself again torn between sharing some practical encouragement or talking about current world events. So, after some brief remarks, I want to share some words of encouragement and hope for this new year we have just entered. But, first, . . .

THREE IMPORTANT THINGS: I recently ran across three very interesting articles . . . one concerning President Bush, one from the famous (or notorious) Ben Stein who produced the DVD "Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed ", and the other concerning the conversion of a major Muslim figure. First, . . . + President Bush: If you have wondered, as many have, what happened that made President Bush's presidency get off course, you might be interested in the following information; perhaps you've already heard this. It certainly helps explain some of his waffling and less-than-firm stand on a number of moral issues. While I believe he is one of the most committed followers of Jesus Christ we've had in the White House in the past 100 years, his stand on a "two-state" solution in Israel and other issues are more explainable if you recognize three things: 1. President Bush does not believe that the entire Bible is God's inspired, inerrant, Word, but simply contains it while other portions are not inspired or inerrant. This should not surprise us because he and his wife, Laura, as also their respective parents come from church backgrounds (Episcopal and Methodist) who hold that position. In an earlier interview, he is quoted as saying, "You know. Probably not, No, I'm not a literalist, but I think you can learn a lot from it, but I do think that the New Testament for example is ... has got ... You know, the important lesson is 'God sent a son."

2. President Bush is a strong believer in Replacement Theology which essentially states that when Israel sinned and rebelled against, His covenant promises to her were nullified, and He created then the Church to take Israel's place as the proclaimer of redemption and salvation. Therefore, Israel's claim to the land is no more valid than that of the Arabs and the Palestinians in particular. 3. The vast majority of President Bush's cabinet members and advisors held similar views concerning the Bible and Israel. With a team like that, the obvious is pretty clear. So, for what it's worth, it should be no real surprise to us that his presidency, particularly regarding the last four or five years, has experienced such turbulence. Regardless of your political convictions, the Bible leaves no doubt that belief in God's Word and a deep love and support for Israel are assurances of successes, and failure in either or both of those areas essentially guarantee trouble and failure. I do believe, as do some 67% of the population, that ten years from now the world will view his presidency as either good or excellent, according to a recent poll. One thing that is certain, his claim that Iraq had WMD's is a fact, and has already been coming to light. If you'd like to read up on that, start with Iraqi Air Force Commander, General George Sada's book, "Saddam's Secret", written in 2006. + Jewish Ben Stein on Christmas: The following was written by Ben Stein and recited by him on CBS Sunday Morning Commentary. My confession : I am a Jew, and every single one of my ancestors was Jewish. And it does not bother me even a little bit when people call those beautiful lit up, bejeweled trees, Christmas trees. I don't feel threatened. I don't feel discriminated against. That's what they are: Christmas trees. It doesn't bother me a bit when people say, 'Merry Christmas' to me. I don't think they are slighting me or getting ready to put me in a ghetto. In fact, I kind of like it. It shows that we are all brothers and sisters celebrating this happy time of year. It doesn't bother me at all that there is a manger scene on display at a key intersection near my beach house in Malibu If people want a crche, it's just as fine with me as is the Menorah a few hundred yards away. I don't like getting pushed around for being a Jew, and I don't think Christians like getting pushed around for being Christians. I think people who believe in God are sick and tired of getting pushed around, period. I have no idea where the concept came from that America is an explicitly atheist country. I can't find it in the Constitution and I don't like it being shoved down my throat. Or maybe I can put it another way: where did the idea come from that we should worship celebrities and we aren't allowed to worship God as we understand Him? I guess that's a sign that I'm getting old, too. But there are a lot of us who are wondering where these celebrities came from and where the America we knew went to. In light of the many jokes we send to one another for a laugh, this is a little different: This is not intended to be a joke; it's not funny, it's intended to get you thinking. Billy Graham's daughter was interviewed on the Early Show and Jane Clayson asked her 'How could God let something like this happen?' (regarding Katrina) Anne Graham gave an extremely profound and insightful response. She said, 'I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we've been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives. And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?' In light of recent events... terrorists attack, school shootings, etc. I think it started when Madeleine Murray O'Hare (she was murdered, her body found a few years ago) complained she didn't want prayer in our schools, and we said OK. Then someone said you better not read the Bible in school. The Bible says thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, and love your neighbor as yourself. And we said OK. Then Dr. Benjamin Spock said we shouldn't spank our children when they misbehave because their little personalities would be warped and we might damage their self-esteem (Dr Spock's son committed suicide). We said an expert should know what he's talking about. And we said OK.

Now we're asking ourselves why our children have no conscience, why they don't know right from wrong, and why it doesn't bother them to kill strangers, their classmates, and themselves. Probably, if we think about it long and hard enough, we can figure it out. I think it has a great deal to do with 'WE REAP WHAT WE SOW.' Funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell. Funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says. Funny how you can send 'jokes' through e-mail and they spread like wildfire but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing. Funny how lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene articles pass freely through cyberspace, but public discussion of God is suppressed in the school and workplace. Are you laughing yet? Funny how when you forward this message, you will not send it to many on your address list because you're not sure what they believe, or what they will think of you for sending it. Funny how we can be more worried about what other people think of us than what God thinks of us. Pass it on if you think it has merit. If not then just discard it... no one will know you did. But, if you discard this thought process, don't sit back and complain about what bad shape the world is in. My Best Regards, Honestly and respectfully, Ben Stein Don't be afraid to say Merry Christmas! It's the least we can do for Jesus! + Salvation of another Hamas figure: In case you missed it, Fox News reported yesterday that the son of a major Hamas leader has defected the organization, has left his family, has come to faith in Christ, and has moved to the United States. Here a link to the Fox News report. Click here for more on FOX News' special Escape from Hamas. You should take time to read it. What a powerful testimony! There are also two related videos at Renouncing Islam and Son of Hamas Leader Speaks Out , each one both sobering and thrilling. Here's part of the article itself: Yousef said he was indoctrinated at an early age to use violence to challenge Israeli control in the region. As a teenager he moved up within the organization and became the leader of the radical Islamic Youth Movement that fought Israeli tanks and troops in the streets, celebrated suicide bombings and recruited young men to the cause. Yousef, 30, said he realized the true nature of Hamas and radical Islam during a stint in an Israeli prison. He renounced his Muslim faith, left his family behind in Ramallah and converted to Christianity. "Islam is not the word of God," said Yousef. "If you want to be offended it's your problem. But you know something? Go study. Think for a second that I might be right. So wake up, look at your path, see where you're going. Are you really going to heaven with 72 virgins after you kill yourself and kill another 20 people?" Yousef has sought asylum in the United States and now attends an evangelical Christian church in San Diego, Calif. "The Hamas leadership, including my father, they're responsible; they're responsible for all the violence that happened from the organization. I know they describe it as reaction to Israeli aggression, but still, they are part of it and they had to make decisions in those operations against Israel (for) which there was the killing of many civilians."

TOOLS FOR NAVIGATING THIS YEAR: Wellspring Church is different from the vast majority of churches in America. With attendance probably in the 200's most Sundays, it has no debt. It has no paid pastoral staff, and never has. As far as I know, none of the elders are ordained by man, none of them are full time at the church, and all of them have other jobs. Close to 60% of its weekly income goes to

mission causes outside its own ministry. It has a large population of students who attend from the local Christian university. And, Jo Ann and I are members there. John Wheeler is one of the elders and currently does most of the preaching since David Whitlock took the presidency of a major Christian university in Oklahoma. Having grown up as a local farm boy, John serves as Dean of the Schollian College of Education, one of the most highly respected teacher training institutions in the Midwest with a graduate placement rating of over 90%. Yesterday John took a break from his lengthy study of the Gospel of Matthew and spoke on "Your Survival Kit for 2009", taken from the book of James. I felt that the "ten tools" he identified from chapter one were important enough that I wanted to share them with you today, adding my personal thoughts to them. There is little doubt that this year is going to be a challenging one for just about everyone. The question is not whether we will face challenging times, but rather how we will respond to them when they come. Whether they are family, health, financial, occupational, or otherwise, . . . the evidence is clear. Challenges await us all, no matter our ethnicity, economic status, education, or role in life. Whether farmer or futurist, educated or illiterate, wealthy or poor, . . . you and I face an unclear future. This future should not be faced with apprehension, anxiety, or fatalism, however. That's the way unbelievers must face it, but not you and me. As followers of Christ, we can and we must face them with enthusiasm over the opportunities to see God's faithfulness and sufficiency, with compassion to minister to the suffering who cross our paths, with zeal to share the story of redemption in the remaining days, and with discipline to live consistently in godliness and victory while in the middle of temptation and turmoil. John passed ten essentials . . . these guarantees for survival and success . . . from James chapter one to us yesterday. Today I pass five of them on to you, hoping they will encourage you . . . and that you'll share them with others. Next letter I'll share the remaining five. While they aren't original with anyone other than the Lord Himself, they are still clearly applicable to our world today. So, take time to get your Bible out and make some notations as to how they can be applied in your personal journey into the future. 1. Exercise godly responses to the trials you face. "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing" (James 1:2-4). Trials and problems are part of life; no one is immune. Just as it rains on the just and unjust alike, so also problems come, no matter how surrendered you are to Christ. Keep the following truths constantly in your mind: 1) Trials and problems are a part of life, and generally have little to do with your walk with the Lord. 2) God doesn't allow trials to come your way because you're bad or sinful, but because you're human. 3) Train yourself to run "to" the trials instead of "from" them. They are opportunities for growth and maturity . . . and perhaps a miracle or two. 4) God will always provide a way through them, but not around them. I Cor 10:13 says, "No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it." 5) Learn to rejoice in the difficulty instead of complaining. It will change your own attitude, will encourage those around you, and will be a witness to unbelievers watching you. 6) Recognize that trials and difficult times help you develop endurance. Romans 5:3-5 says, "And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us." 7) Admit that the real issue is never the trial, but you. God is a God of love and tender mercies Who has no desire to harm, even if it hurts. He's far more interested in how the difficult times will conform you more into the likeness of His Son than He is interested in the outcome of the problem. You are always the focus of His attention, . . . even when it comes to difficult times. 2. Seek Wisdom as a Priority for the year. "But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him" (James 1:5). While we spend so much of our time gathering information, knowledge, and intelligence, let's not stop until it all results in wisdom. When God promised Solomon that He would give him whatever he asked, Solomon's immediate request was for wisdom (II Chron 1:10-12). It changed his life; he got as an added bonus all the wealth he needed, and a reputation that extended beyond his own circle of relationships (II Chron 9:3-23). Consider these thoughts about wisdom: 1) Ask for it. Ask for godly wisdom. James is clear . . . ask! Dealing with other matters, James goes on in 4:2-3 to tell us that we don't have because we either don't ask, or we ask with wrong motives. However, look at what he says in

3:13-17 ---- "Who among you is wise and understanding? Let him show by his good behavior his deeds in the gentleness of wisdom. . . . This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, natural, demonic. . . . But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy." 2) If we ask for this type of wisdom, God will give it. God gives all good things to those who ask, and wisdom is something that is good. And, that kind that God gives is amazing . . . pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy, . . . 3) Therefore we need to constantly seek this type of wisdom. We should seek it because we know its quality, but also because we know God wants us to have it. Too many people depend on the wisdom of others for their growth and decisions. God wants them to have wisdom themselves, and not only the benefits from the wisdom of others. 4) Such wisdom will be found in God's Word. You will never get reliable wisdom apart from the Word of God. Frankly, this is the beginning place for gaining wisdom. 5) Be patient; wisdom doesn't come overnight. Gaining wisdom is usually a lifetime process, but God allows you to see what you have discovered as you move from one episode of life to the next. You'll ever have all wisdom, but you'll have more . . . and more . . . and more . . . as you walk life's pathways. But, along the way there will be times when you need to simply patiently wait on the Lord . . . and wait until He gives you the insight you need for the occasion. Just be sure you wait . . . and then receive the insight He gives you . . . and then live it out. I promise you, my friend, that you're going to need more wisdom than you've ever had in order to face what's ahead in 2009; you'll need wisdom to manage your finances, face the challenges, deal with global issues, make health decisions, and stay courageous in sharing the Gospel. Whatever else you may try to achieve this year, concentrate on seeking wisdom; the rest will come for you, just as it did for Solomon. 3. Live a life of abandoned yet consistent and persistent faith. "But let him ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea driven and tossed by the wind. For let not that man expect that he will receive anything from the Lord, being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways" (James 1:6-8). James' contrast here is striking. 1) Faith has no relationship to feelings, although feelings will sometimes accompany faith. Most times, though, feelings are absent. Otherwise, it would not be pure and unadulterated faith. Surprisingly, too, when feelings do accompany faith, they are generally feelings of contentment and greater faith than they are of joy or exhilaration. 2) Faith is an ongoing and growing lifestyle that prohibits living today on yesterday's faith. "For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "But the righteous man shall live by faith" (Rom 1:17). In other words, living by faith is a way of living your life, and not an occasional event along the way. 3) The more you trust God, the more you trust God. {:-) As we see in the statement above, there is an unexplainable dynamic that tells us that one moment of trusting God builds our confidence in Him so that when we face the next circumstance, our confidence is greater. And, so it goes throughout all of life. 4) Choose to eliminate all doubt and skepticism, be alert to their subtle invasions, and refuse to entertain them when they come. Just as faith is a decision, so also is removing doubt. You must choose to do so. When you hear the doctor's report, or the news media's prediction, or your boss's dismissal speech, embrace faith and reject doubt and fear. 5) Wavering between faith and doubt is as destructive as a storm. The Greek word for a double-minded person can be translated, "two-faced" . . . looking two directions at once, and pretending to be something he is not. My friend, John, described it yesterday as being spiritually schizophrenic, "a state characterized by the coexistence of contradictory or incompatible elements". Faith and doubt are clearly contradictory and incompatible elements in the believer's life. It is obvious, my friend, that we are facing days ahead where unwavering confidence in God is going to be necessary. It would be a good idea to begin practicing that right now. 4. Focus on Christ, and not on things. "But let the brother of humble circumstances glory in his high position; and let the rich man glory in his humiliation, because like flowering grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with a scorching wind, and withers the grass; and its flower falls off, and the beauty of its appearance is destroyed; so too the rich man in the midst of his pursuits will fade away" (James 1:9-11). James' admonition is like that his brother, Jesus, taught long before James acknowledged He was the Redeemer. Jesus said, "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (Matt 6:33). When you examine what James is saying within the context of the entire passage, it seems he is telling us that we must keep our perspective by locking our eyes on Christ so much so that when the storms come, we are not shaken . . . much like what happened to Peter on the Sea of Galilee years earlier. Likewise with us, then, . . . 1) Don't be worrisome and anxious when we find ourselves not having what we think we need or not being where we feel we need to be. 2) Don't be proud and arrogant when God blesses us unexpectedly with abundance. 3) Glory and rejoice in those times when things, opportunities, or people are taken away from us.

4) Remember that everything we have is temporal . . . it is temporary and will eventually decompose and disappear. One of my favorite scriptures is I John 2:15-17, and it speaks powerfully to this truth. "Do not love the world, nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God abides forever". You surely remember from past letters that John makes it crystal clear that we are never to live our lives according to the values and systems of the world, and that to do so exposes our lack of love and commitment to God. He then identifies the philosophy of the world system in these terms: 1) "Lust of the flesh" ---- the passion to Do something apart from God. 2) "Lust of the eyes" ---- the passion to Have something apart from God. 3) "Pride of life" ---- the passion to Be somebody apart from God. He concludes with this powerful fact of life and that is that such living gets you nowhere, it will all go down the drain in the end, but only the one who lives his life focused on the things of God will survive. As we face a very unclear and uncertain future, it is imperative that we order our lives in such a way that Jesus Christ is truly the very center of all we are, all we have, and all we do. 5. Keep Your Eyes on the Crown. "Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him" (James 1:12). This statement can be misleading to us in our culture and age because we generally have only one word for crown, which we interpret as being a royalty head piece generally made of gold and precious jewels. If we take that interpretation, we end up with a grave misrepresentation of what James is saying. He is Not telling us to persevere in order for us to earn a position of royalty and power, however. Instead, he is urging us to strive for something of far greater value. Let's look briefly at five key words . . . persevere, trial, approved, crown, and life. "Hupomeno" is the Greek word for persevere, and means "to remain behind and stay under", as opposed to trying to escape and evade. Trial or temptation in the Greek language is "pirasmos" and is used to describe experiencing adversity. In other words, James is telling us that we are blessed if we successfully and willfully allow ourselves to abide under times of adversity, knowing the experience is for our good. Approved is the Greek word from which we get the word assayed, which is a word used in valuating precious metals. In Greek it is "dokimos" and literally means to acceptably pass the assaying and evaluating process which is conducted by the pain of both fire and chemical. Crown, then, comes from the Greek word, "stefanos", which literally means a wreath or garland head piece made of vines or flowers, and is used (as opposed to a simple fillet or a glittering mark of royalty) to characterize a person who is being recognized and honored for what he has just done. It is reasonable to call it the crown of life because it is made from a living thing (vines and/or flowers) and is given to the one who has conducted himself in an honorable and victorious way in life. "Zoe" is the Greek word for life or for lifetime. What James is really saying, then, is to willingly stay behind and remain under the pressure of adversity so that your true Christ-like character can be revealed, and people will honor and respect you for the consistent life you have demonstrated. He tells us that we must always keep consistent integrity and upright righteous living in our minds, allowing that high standard to be the thing that motivates us and drives us onward toward the final destination.

FINALLY: In closing then today, let me ask you. Can you think of things any more important to facing 2009 than these five things? What do you think your life might be like if you set your eyes like flint toward these five things? Does the world have anything of greater value to offer you? Even though there are five more elements James mentions in the remaining verses, these first five are enough to radically change our attitudes; and if our attitudes are changed, our aspirations will change; and if our aspirations change, our actions will. What better way to begin 2009 than to commit ourselves to joyfully facing this year's adversities and challenges knowing that we will come out the other side better people, and more like Christ. What greater goal for the year than to week-by-week, day-by-day, gain more and more godly wisdom and insight. What more life changing exercise can we practice than increasing the strength and consistency of our trust in God. What more fruitful practice can we ever find than to keep our eyes focused on the Lord Jesus Christ, seeking His kingdom, and then trusting all other things to His sovereign purposes and His sufficient provision. And, what greater legacy can we leave at the end of this year than that of a person who withstood the pressure and endured the struggles with integrity and character. I think I'll make a list of these five things, plus the next five, stick them in my Bible, read them daily, and ask God to remind me that these are disciplines I want to live by all year long.

1. I determine to face trials with Godly, Christlike responses rather than typical human nature. 2. I determine to seek wisdom from God and His Word so as to make sound decisions and evaluations. 3. I determine to trust the Lord more fully each day with every aspect of my life. 4. I determine to have Christ alone as the center of my attention, and pay less attention to material matters. 5. I determine to face this year's pressures in such a way that people will see the Living Christ as my source of character and integrity. Word them as you will, but I recommend you do the same . . . and then practice them daily. You'll get through this year with flying colors, come what may, if you will.
