"Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will Be Done" is more than a part of Christ's instruction teaching us how to pray. It is God's singular agenda to which He is still committed. It should likewise be ours. T. Allen Robburts +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ SHOULDER TO SHOULDER #579 ---- 1/12/09 Title: "Tools For Navigating 2009" (Part Two)

Dear Fellow Kingdom Builder: Greetings on a brisk Midwest winter day. I pray God is blessing and encouraging you with His love and faithfulness; I pray moreso that you readily see His grace abounding and overflowing toward you in your behalf. I am writing from a motel room in Quincy, IL. Jo Ann and I are staying there while we visit our youngest daughter and her family and thank the church her husband pastors for their support of our ministry in Kyiv the past several years. Unfortunately, Jo Ann contracted the flu the night of our arrival, so she's spent the last two days holed up in the room battling fever, chills, and nausea, while I've tried to be a helpful husband bringing in soup, cereal, etc. when she finally was able to eat. Because of some strange glitches in the wireless service in the motel, I'm having to send in a rather unorthodox way that may lose the formatting. If that happens, I apologize; we'll get back to normal next week. Today's letter is a bit different in that it begins with several short articles I feel are important to pass on to my "Shoulders" readers. Then, we'll conclude last week's study.

THIS 'N' THAT: + My good missionary friend, Joe, living in one of the "Stans", sent me the following link that clarifies some things that Ben Stein is reported to have said concerning Christmas. Apparently Stein did not say the latter portion of the article I included in my last letter. Frankly, it's an insult to us when people tamper with what others have said or written. So, please take time to read the correct version of Ben's "still good" commentary. Go to http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/confessions.asp. Some of my subscribers have forwarded the earlier letter, so I suggest a follow-up clarification be sent as well. In re-reading the article as I sent it last week, I'm almost certain that this is actually two commentaries that Ben Stein delivered at two separate times, because I seem to remember seeing him make the remarks about Sodom and Gomorrah Ruth Graham Lotz made years ago. But, regardless, it merits clarification. + Dale, my cousin, sent an excellent explanation of how to tell if a person is having or has recently had a stroke. Based on the first three letters of the word, "STR", plus a second "S", ask the person to do the following ---- Smile, Talk, Raise, and Stick. S = Smile. If a person has had a stroke, the smile will be crooked. T = Talk. If a person has had a stroke, the speech may be slurred, or he may have difficulty forming sentences or speaking

at all. R = Raise both arms. If there has been a stroke, one arm will probably be weaker than the other. S = Stick out the tongue. If a stroke has occurred, the tongue will be "crooked" or w ill stick out one side of the mouth rather than the center. If any of these symptoms are present, the likelihood of a stroke is very high, and the person should be taken to the hospital immediately. + Here's a novel article I read last Wednesday in "Religion Today Summaries" that reminds us of just how easy it really is to take advantage of witnessing opportunities . . . if we'll just be sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and keep our eyes open and ears tuned. Some Christians Welcome Atheist Ads on Buses ---The Christian Post reports that an atheist group's ad campaign hit London buses yesterday, but some Christians aren't worried about the ads. The think tank Theos believes the ads - which read, "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life" - will only encourage people to consider their faith. "Telling someone 'there's probably no God' is a bit like telling them that they've probably remembered to lock their front door. It creates the doubt that they might not have done so," said Theos Director Paul Woolley. Mike Elms, a fellow of The Marketing Society and former chief executive of ad agencies Ogilvy & Mather and Tempus/CIA, agreed. "[A]theists are challenging us to make that choice one way or another. The atheist campaign opens the door toward a very public debate on the existence and nature of God." + The situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip is critical, but certainly not surprising. Wednesday I received the following note from Paul and Nuala O'Higgins, our friends who led our tour of Israel last October. They have traveled more than 40 times to the area, and have many friends, both Jewish and Palestinian. I encourage you to go to the link below, where you will find several short video clips of the situation. For Zion's Sake I will Not Keep Silent. The war in Gaza is a continuation of the war of terror against the state of Israel. In addition the accompanying propaganda war is a demonic effort to put a wedge between Christians and Israel so that the blessing that comes from the alliance of love between jews and Christians will once again be broken. If the devil can force Christians into anti-Zionism then the blessigns of Abraham (made available through the cross) will be severely hindered, as the were in the sad centuries of Christian anti-Semitsm. Anti Israel is the new face of anti-Semitism and this spirit is well fueled by Islamic and secular humanistic propaganda and misinterpretation of current events. The selective outrage by those who protest Israel and remain silent on other military and humanitarian crises throughout the word is evidence enough that we are not simply dealing with sympathy towards the people of Gaza but with a spirit of violent anti-Semitism. While we do abhor the loss of innocent lives - the responsibility for these losses must be placed squarely where it belongs, on the Hamas leaders who use innocent people as shields to protect their terror rockets. The below link was sent to us by some of our Messianic friends in Israel. Please look at this link and pass it on to your friends and to your local newspapers and media outlets etc. We pray the Lord's peace on all the people of Israel and Gaza according to His word and that the anti Semitic spirit that incited Europeans to such crazy action towards the jewish people during the dark days of World War II will find no resting place in the hearts of all people of good will today. In His love, Paul & Nuala (O'Higgins) Feel free to Forward http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j61ktUeDDuo

+ The Palestinian Believers in Gaza are in a "catch 22" situation. This article from Joel News International should put us on alert to pray for these dear people. Gaza: A report from the Christian community

Organizations helping Palestinian Christians are asking the world to pray that the violence in Gaza will end. Carl Moeller, President of Open Doors USA, says Palestinian Christians have nowhere to turn. "They're not part of Hamas, and they're not Israelis. So the Israelis see them as Palestinians, and the Palestinians see them as Christians who are not part of their Islamic movement. Gaza is a tough place to be." Describing the chaotic situation in Gaza, one church leader said that while everyone suffers, he feels especially bad for the children, who wake up several times in the middle of the night; crying or even screaming from fear and memories that come back to their minds. "Many children are traumatized because they have seen bodies lying on the streets that used to be their playground." Open Doors said that about 2,500 Christians remain in Gaza and are unable to leave. Prayer is requested that the war between Israel and Palestine will be shorter and less devastating than what military and political speculators around the world are predicting, and that Christian families will be protected and reunited. Moeller says seeds of the Gospel have been planted in Gaza. "Brother Andrew and others have shared Christ with the leadership of Hamas, and we're praying these seeds will take root. Ultimately, the only hope for peace in Gaza is the Prince of Peace, Jesus Christ." Source: MNN, Open Doors Since this article was posted, the news media is reporting that three Christians have been killed. + Critical situation with "our" Farsi ministry: I've made several attempts to send out a report of the work with Farsi speakers with which we were involved in our previous location in Europe. However, those attempts have failed, and I'm not certain if it is Satan's effort to keep you from praying, or if it's the Lord's way of not jeopardizing the safety of this group. So, in case you don't know yet, please pray for that group of young men and women. They were apparently recently deceived and ended up being confronted by one of the strongest and most powerful Imam's in their home country who had come to their city to preach Islam. It is highly possible that they will be reported to their home country's embassy that has already been trying to squelch the growth of conversions to Christ in that country. Then, on the way home from that meeting, "M", the ministry leader, was sprayed with "gas" from a balloon, leaving his hands and feet so numb that he was immobile. After security people at the metro station gave him a tablet and water, he was able to get home, but at least on Friday his feet were still numb and he was vomiting. I heard Saturday from one of the Pastoral Leadership Team members at the church, and he indicated that "M" is feeling much better. However, the dangers are still very real.

MORE TOOLS FOR NAVIGATING 2009: Now, let's conclude the article I began last week, continuing to use John Wheeler's "Ten Tools for Survival in 2009". Last week I noted the first five . . . 1. Exercise godly responses to the trials you face (James 1:2-4). 2. Seek Wisdom as a priority for the year (James 1:5). 3. Live a life of abandoned yet consistent and persistent faith (James 1:6-8). 4. Focus on Christ, and not on things (James 1:9-11). 5. Keep your eyes on the crown (James 1:12). Here are John's remaining five with my personal thoughts, as was the case last week.

6. Understand Temptation (12-15). "Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life, which the Lord has promised to those who love Him. Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am being tempted by God'; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death" (James 1:12-15). Setting the stage, we need the meanings of some words in this text. In verse 12, the word for trial is "peirasmos" which seems to mean, "prove yourself". However, within the context of the scripture it tends to identify an adversary as the origin of that challenge. It literally means "a challenge to prove coming from the experience, solicitation, or provocation of evil adversity". We also see the word "tried", a different word in Greek, "dokimos" which we discussed last week and meaning assayed or evaluated so you can see for yourself the quality of your walk of faith.

Then in verse 13 we find "peirazo", a derivative of "peirasmos", but meaning an attempt to be enticed by and eventually succumbing to evil. James is clear that such things are not from God. "Esti" is the word used to tell us God can neither be tempted nor cause temptation with evil. It is accompanied by "apeirastos" and, together, they simply mean that God is both untemptable and does not tempt or entice with evil. Too often we tend to become upset with God for the problems we face. We quickly forget that being a follower of Jesus Christ does not guarantee an exemption from temptation and struggles. Likewise, we sometimes accuse God of putting the temptation to sin in our paths as if He's somehow "checking us out". However, if you examine this scripture more closely, you quickly realize something ---God never uses evil as a means of checking us out or testing us. He may use trials and difficulties, as we saw last week, but He never puts the temptation to sin in front of us. That is clearly and always either from the world, the flesh (our old corrupt tendencies), or the devil. Frankly, it is an insult to God when we blame Him for our having to face the temptations of this world as if it is His fault. It is never His fault, and we absolutely no right to blame Him for having to deal with evil. Some thirty-five years ago I preached a sermon for the first time in which I differentiated between trials, testings, and temptations. There are distinct differences and sources, and it's important to keep that in mind. In this verse, James is dealing specifically with the temptation to sin or do evil, and he makes it clear that it is virtually impossible for such temptation to come from God, or be approved by God. He says two things about God; first, God can't be tempted with evil; and second, God never tempts people with evil. So, mark it down, my friend ---- God never has used evil as a way of testing you, checking you out, trying to get you off track, or putting you on the spot so He can punish you. That truth should make it abundantly clear, then, the source of temptations to sin. God never causes the temptations to sin that we face, but, rather, provides the means to resist them. If you really understand this truth, your struggles with such temptations during this new year will be greatly diminished and your victories will be far more joyous as you see the faithfulness of God in honoring your desire to live a godly life. So, it's important to understand temptation and its source; and, you will be sorely tempted this year. Remember how to handle it when it happens.

7. Remember the Source of God's gifts (16-18). "Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good thing bestowed and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation, or shifting shadow" (James 1:16-17). It isn't coincidental that this tool is juxtaposed to temptation and its source. James reminds us that we need to remember that God gives only that which is good. It is an echo of Jesus' statement in Mt 7:11, "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!" Again, the Holy Spirit uses precise words (as He always throughout the entire Bible) in order to help us understand the depth and wealth of God's Word. "Good thing bestowed" comes from two Greek words, "agathos" , the primary word, and "dosis" meaning "to give" which comes from the root word, "didomi". Together they could be translated, "an act or initiative of beneficial giving". It's referring not so much to a gift as it is to the act of giving. In other words, God is always acting in our behalf by giving. The next phrase, "perfect gift" adds further understanding. "Teleios" ("perfect") simply means "complete" or "of full age". "Dorema" is used in this case for "gift" and means "bestowment". Again, it shows us not so much a thing or item we are receiving, but rather an act of perfect and complete love of the Father toward us. Unfortunately, we tend to focus our attention on receiving "things" from God, rather than watching in gratitude and awe over God's constant expressions of blessings to us. So, I think what James was trying to remind us of is that our real gratitude needs to be not for What God gives us, but rather the fact that He Gives. That will give you a sense of confident assurance as you face this new year. Bringing these two "tools" together, we are reminded that nothing bad comes from God, and God is always in the act of giving to us. A great response on our part would be to develop a lifestyle of gratitude and thanksgiving for God's goodness in both cases. It reminds me of that great passage in Psalm 37:25, "I have been young, and now I am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Or his descendants begging bread."

8. Eliminate Anger (19-21). "Let everyone be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. Therefore putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls" (James 1:19-21).

There is far more in this text than just controlling one's anger. Paul tells us that our anger should not result in sin, and for the sun to not go down on our anger (Eph 4:26). The Holy Spirit instructs James to use specific wording. Interestingly, the word used here is "orge" from which we get the word for wild, sensual, partying. It literally means a passionate violence that results in retribution, punishment, or vengeance. Modern translations usually translate the word as "wrath". James is telling us to be slow to speak and slow to feel or express wrath toward others. He concludes with the declaration that God's righteousness cannot be produced and manifested in a heart consumed by such vindictiveness. You probably know from personal experience, as I do, that any type of anger in general, whether simple irritation or agravation or a hateful passion for revenge, simply accomplishes nothing positive in our lives or in the lives against whom we express it. It is totally destructive in every way, and as matter of fact, it is simply a waste of time and energy that leaves you upset and tired. According to some theologs, that type of corrupt mind breeds dirtiness, excessive depravity and wickedness, as described in verse 21. James, instead tells us to implant God's Word into our lives, perhaps suggesting that this is the only way to truly deal with the issue of anger. Have you ever considered the role that God's Word has in dealing with Anger? Just as anger cannot reside in the presence of prayer, it seems logical to also acknowledge that it cannot remain in the heart of a person who immerses himself, with genuine faith, in God's word.

9. Revitalize and Obey God's Word (22-25) "But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man shall be blessed in what he does" (James 1:22-25). The late Ron Dunn said many years ago that we only really believe the part of the Bible that we obey. There is probably more truth to that than we like to admit. But, one thig is certain . . . most of us claim to believe the Bible in its entirety, but don't live in obedience in such a way that would verify that claim. And yet, when we do we see the results. Again, James uses an interesting contrast that shapes a fundamental conclusion. No matter how much we claim to believe the Word, if we do not obey it, we are simply "observers" of truth rather than participants in truth. It is when we participate in the truth of God's Word through obedience that we experience God's blessings. The Bible repeatedly tells us how important it is that we be obedient to what it says. For example, "Only be strong and very courageous; be careful to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, so that you may have success wherever you go. This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. So, if you want to see growth and victory in 2009, especially in these totally unpredictable conditions, the Word of God must be a priority that you practice through obedience" (Josh 1:7-9).

10. Control Your Tongue (26-27) "If anyone thinks himself to be religious, and yet does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is worthless. This is pure and undefiled religion in the sight of our God and Father, to visit orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world" (James 1:26-27). Have you ever considered how much the Bible addresses problems with the tongue? The late Derek Prince, India-born British citizen and scholar of Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic and Latin languages, claimed in his book, The Use and Abuse of the Tongue, that perhaps our speech does more to destroy the influence and effectiveness of our lives than any other thing. Using James' statement that both blessings and curses come from the way we use the tongue, Prince was convinced that things such as back biting, gossip, lying, deceiving, complaining, criticizing, profanity, crude talk, coarse jesting, flattery, and the like. Consider relationships that have deteriorated for you; did they begin because of something that was said? Or did they escalate based on what was being said? There is no doubt that, as James indicates in chapter three, our speech is something that must be dealt with. "For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well. Now if we put the bits into the horses' mouths so that they may obey us, we direct their entire body as well. "Behold, the ships also, though they are so great and are driven by strong winds, are still directed by a very small rudder,

wherever the inclination of the pilot desires. So also the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. Behold, how great a forest is set aflame by such a small fire! "And the tongue is a fire, the very world of iniquity; the tongue is set among our members as that which defiles the entire body, and sets on fire the course of our life, and is set on fire by hell. For every species of beasts and birds, of reptiles and creatures of the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by the human race. "But no one can tame the tongue; it is a restless evil and full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father; and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God; from the same mouth come both blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be this way" (James 3:2-10). James was not the only one to challenge us concerning the use of the tongue. Paul had equally powerful things to say, such as, "But do not let immorality or any impurity or greed even be named among you, as is proper among saints; and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks" (Eph 5:3-4). Perhaps no single discipline will be more important for a fruitful and prosperous 2009 than that of having the mind of Christ and speaking only that which edifies and builds up.

FINALLY: With this, we conclude John Wheeler's "Survival Kit of Tools For Navigating 2009". No more profound and yet practical instruction can be found in God's Word. In review, . . . 6. Understand temptation and where it comes from (James 1:12-15). 7. Remember the source of God's gifts (1:16-18). 8. Eliminate anger from your lifestyle (1:19-21). 9. Revitalize and obey God's Word (1:22-25). 10. Control your tongue (1:26-27). Imagine what 2009 can be like if, day by day, you and I can develop greater and greater success in exercising these disciplines. It's not impossible, you know. It will certainly enable us to face the challenges of today and the uncertainties of the future with far more joy, gratitude, and confidence than if we don't take James' instruction seriously.
