SELF-REVIEW: AN ALTERNATIVE WAY FOR PASSING THE NLE

Prepared by: Ana Asumpta Novilla-Perez, RN; MAN

What Self-review is not ... It is not the only review method. It is not necessarily separated from other review method. It is not a review for everyone.

THEORETICAL FOUNDATION
Self-review models: The Keller Plan, Individually Prescribed Instruction, Program for Learning in Accordance with Needs and Individually Guided Education. The Keller Plan (1963) features: individually paced mastery learning lectures and demonstrations motivational use of proctors permitted testing, tutoring, personal-social aspect Learning is the acquisition of new knowledge, attitudes and skills. It may occur during an organized course or through individual reading and study.

SELF-PACED LEARNING
Learning directed by the individual in order to meet personal learning objectives. The content, learning sequence, pace of learning and media are determined by the individual. Examples of self-paced learning include: Reading a book to acquire new information listening to audiotapes completing a workbook. Reading a reference manual and watching a video. Completing a computer-assisted learning (CAL) Distance learning course on the Internet Structured clinical course in a reference manual

ADVANTAGES OF SELF-REVIEW

Reviewees can learn when they need them. Reviewees are not as dependent on the structure. Process is highly motivating for many reviewees. Reviewees are active rather than passive It is an efficient use of training time and resources. Learning activities can be organized sequentially. Provides reviewers (if any) with the time to focus more attention on learners. Materials and supplies used can be kept at a minimum

LIMITATIONS OF SELF-REVIEW

EFFECTIVE STUDY SKILLS ARE ABOUT MORE THAN UNDERSTANDING

The value of a schedule Before you even begin to think about the process of studying, you must develop a schedule. A schedule saves time All schedules should be made with the idea that they can be revised. Making every hour count A schedule should take into account every activity, lecture, social event, and other work in which you engage. You must focus on the other "free time" available and how you will use it. When to study A good rule of thumb is that studying should be carried out only when you are rested, alert, and have planned for it.

Reviewees may feel uncomfortable with learning on their own. Participants may lack the necessary motivation to work independently. Participants may have poor reading skills, this can be a major limitation. Procrastination may make the self-review less effective. Most reviewers need training to become effective facilitators. Reviewers may feel that they do not have time to manage a selfstudy. It may be challenging and time-consuming to design materials. May be difficult for the reviewer to arrange to meet with the reviewee. Reviewers may find updating reviewees' time-consuming.

THE PROCESS OF STUDY

How to use your time Time is the most valuable resource a reviewee has. It is also one of the most wasted of resources. The schedule you develop should guide you in how to allocate the available time in the most productive manner. Where to study You can study anywhere. Obviously, some places are better than others. Libraries, study lounges or private rooms are best.

STRATEGIES: THE SQ3R METHOD

Survey - get the best overall picture of what you're going to study BEFORE you study it an any detail. Question - ask questions for learning. The important things to learn are usually answers to questions. Read - Reading is NOT running your eyes over a textbook. When you read, read actively. Read to answer questions you have asked yourself or questions the instructor or author has asked. Recite- When you recite, you stop reading periodically to recall what you have read. Try to recall main headings, important ideas of concepts presented in bold or italicized type, and what graphs charts or illustrations indicate. Review - A review is a survey of what you have covered. It is a review of what you are supposed to accomplish, not what you are going to do.
