Need merupakan sebuah kata kerja (verb) yang maknanya
adalah perlu / membutuhkan. Need juga memiliki arti
kedua yaitu kebutuhan, arti yang kedua ini berfungsi
sebagai kata benda (noun).
Kita menggunakan kata kerja need saat kita
ingin menyampaikan bahwa kita
membutuhkan sesuatu berupa benda atau
barang.
Contoh:
✓ I need a little sugar for my coffee.
(Aku butuh sedikit gula untuk kopi ku)
✓ He needs food and clothes.
(Dia membutuhkan makanan dan
pakaian)
✓ Martin needed you last night, but you
were not there.
(Martin membutuhkanmu tadi malam,
tapi kamu tidak berada di sana)
Pada contoh kalimat di atas kita dapat
melihat bentuk need menjadi needs atau
needed, pada dasarnya semua fungsi need
tersebut adalah sama, yang
membedakannya hanya bentuk tenses
yang digunakan.
Dalam bentuk negative kita hanya
perlu menambahkan don't, doesn't
atau didn't sebelum kata need sesuai
dengan tenses yang digunakan.
Kita menggunakan need to saat kita ingin
menyampaikan bahwa kita atau seseorang
perlu melakukan sesuatu.
Need to biasanya diikuti oleh kata kerja.
Contoh:
Peter needs to apologize to Jane,
because Jane didn't any mistakes.
(Peter perlu minta maaf kepada Jane,
karena Jane tidak melakukan kesalahan
apapun)
I need to pick my sister up at her school
at 2 p.m.
(Aku perlu menjemput adiku di sekolahnya
jam 2 siang)
We need to wait for Mrs. Carla at the
bus stop.
(Kita perlu menunggu Ibu Carla di halte
bus)
Dalam bentuk negative kita hanya perlu
menambahkan don't, doesn't atau didn't
sebelum kata need sesuai dengan tenses
yang digunakan.
Need + gerund merupakan bentuk passive
karena fungsi dari need + gerund sendiri
adalah untuk menyatakan bahwa sesuatu perlu
dilakukan tanpa menyebutkan secara langsung
siapa yang perlu melakukan hal tersebut.
Contoh:

My room needs tidying. = My room needs to

be tidied.
(Kamarku perlu dirapihkan)

The car needs fixing. = The car needs to be

fixed.
(Mobilnya perlu diperbaiki)

The tables need cleaning. = The tables need

to be cleaned.
(Meja-mejanya perlu dibersihkan)

Dalam bentuk negative kita hanya perlu

menambahkan don't, doesn't atau didn't sebelum
kata need sesuai dengan tenses yang digunakan.
