English Poetry Glossary:

Onomatopoeia/ onomatopoeic language- words used as sounds to refer to actions or objects that they are commonly associated with Contrast- Comparing something to show the difference from something else, normally in juxtaposition. can be in any point in a text. Satire- Using humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule to criticize people or anything that the author thinks is ridiculous, for a constructive purpose Oxymoron- A language technique that contradicts what appear to be two completely unlike terms. Putting two contradictory words together. Euphemism- A word or expression that is substituted for one that can be considered offensive, hurtful or referring to something unpleasant or embarrassing Figurative language- is language that is not literal it is metaphorical, it is over dramatized to achieve a special effect Intertextuality- the reference to a larger text in a smaller text Allusion- an expression that calls to mind something without actually mentioning the object Equivocation- using unclear language to conceal or avoid the truth, misleading use of a term Stress/ emphasis- to place special importance or prominence to a certain word or phrase to indicate a special meaning or particular importance Colloquialisms- a word or phrase that is not formal, language used in day-to-day language Ambiguity-using vague unclear, uncertain, or inexact language Ellipsis- the omission of one or more items from writing to avoid repeating the identical or similar terms that are before or after the Omission- something that has been left out or excluded Connotation- an idea or felling that is created from a word as well as the real meaning of the word Flippant language- Dismissive, aggressive and disrespectful language

Font size- is the size of the text of writing, usually to draw attention a specific word or phrase Verisimilitude- something that appears to be true or real Dialogue- conversation between two or more people as a feature Appropriation- to take something that was someone elses work and altering it slightly Caricature- a picture, description or imitation of a person or things often done in a humorous manner, exaggerating certain aspects Humour- to be amusing, comic or funny Irony- expressing ones meaning for something by using language that normally means the opposite Motif- a feature or idea that is common throughout a text Symbol- something with stands for/ represents something else Simile- a figure of speech where two different things are compared usually using the word/s like or as Metaphor- To say one thing is something else that it cannot be literally applied to. Slang- type of language that consists of words and phrases that are very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people Imperatives- something that demands action, to give a command Exaggeration- representing something as being larger, greater, better, or worse than it really is, altered beyond its normal proportion Hyperbole- exaggerated statements that are not meant to be taken literally Juxtaposition- is how different things; have to be directly next to each other in the text. Not contrast which is over the whole text
