A fastener is a hardware device that mechanically joins or affixes two or more objects together. Fasteners can also be used to close a container such as a bag, a box, or an envelope; or they may involve keeping together the sides of an opening of flexible material, attaching a lid to a container, etc. There are also special-purpose closing devices, e.g. a bread clip. Fasteners used in these manners are often temporary, in that they may be fastened and unfastened repeatedly. Some types of woodworking joints make use of separate internal reinforcements, such as dowels or biscuits, which in a sense can be considered fasteners within the scope of the joint system, although on their own they are not general purpose fasteners. Furniture supplied in flat-pack form often uses cam dowels locked by cam locks, also known as conformat fasteners. Items like a rope, string, wire (e.g. metal wire, possibly coated with plastic, or multiple parallel wires kept together by a plastic strip coating), cable, chain, or plastic wrap may be used to mechanically join objects; but are not generally categorized as fasteners because they have additional common uses. Likewise, hinges and springs may join objects together, but are ordinarily not considered fasteners because their primary purpose is to allow articulation rather than rigid affixment. Other alternative methods of joining materials include crimping, welding, soldering, brazing, taping, gluing, cementing, or the use of other adhesives. The use of force may also be used, such as with magnets, vacuum (like suction cups), or even friction.

Bolts
Bolts can come fully or partially threaded depending on the bolt type. Common bolt head types include: hex, flange, button and flat heads. Various bolt drives include: socket, hex and square drives. The most popular bolts are: stainless steel bolts, grade 8 bolts, carriage bolts and hex bolts.

Screws
Screws are used to hold two objects together or to fasten one object to another. Some screws are designed to screw into a pre-threaded material (internal thread) such as a nut or a theaded hole while others screw directly into a surface while creating their own hole. Common screw head types include: round, flat, pan, oval, truss, and hex. Drive types include, phillips, slotted, torx (allen), hex and socket. The most popular screws are: wood screws, stainless steel screws and machine screws.

Many people head to hardware stores searching for particular nuts or bolts without actually knowing exactly what they need. In cases like this, it is important to understand the differences that tend to cause confusion between these hardware parts, especially the like of nuts, bolts and screws. A nut can be given a simple definition as a small metallic object, shaped in a way as to allow for easy and firm grip, with a spiral cut groove that runs around a hole in its centre. The spiral groove is referred to as the thread. A bolt on the other hand is a metallic piece with a round stem as its body and threaded into one end, with a head to provide firm gripping at the other end. Bolts form the key part of a threaded connection. Some types of bolts are threaded for the full length and others are threaded for just a small length of the end. One key difference between bolts and nuts is that bolts come in various length and sizes. The choice of bolt depends on the thickness of the material between the bolts head and the nut. However, theres no particular type of metal that is used to make nuts or bolts. The most common metal used, though, is carbon steel, often coated with zinc to prevent corrosion.
Notably, bolts made from stainless steel, a high grade steel material with a large percentage of nickel or chrome, are used in corrosive atmospheres. Other materials that can be used to make bolts and nuts include aluminum, plastic, brass and just steel. Selecting the type of nut and bolt to use depends on a number of factors including environment and strength. Both nuts and bolts come in many types. Nuts come in the form of hex, cap, coupler, wing, turnbuckle and lock types. The hex nuts are six-sided and a standard spanner is used to turn them. Coupler nuts have some similarity with hex nuts except for their bigger thickness. Like their name suggests, coupler nuts are used to connect two bolts together. As for bolts, there are the hex type, square, round and flat head bolts, studs and threaded rods both of which have no heads, anchor bolts nor toggle bolts.
