Angkor Bio Cogen Co., Ltd.

Project Details

2 MW. Power plant Generate electricity using rice husk that produced from a rice mill and sell the power back to the mill.

CDM activity (1)

The Project will avoid methane emissions that would be produced from rice husk left to decay in the absence of the Project.

CDM activity (2)

The Project also displace the use of diesel oil for power generation at the rice mill.

The annual amount of emission reductions Baseline emission Project Emission Emission Reduction Total 55,349 tCO2

3,729 tCO2 51,620 tCO2

Status and Challenges Video clip of the construction from the start to now.

Main features of the project The first time in the world using the TORBED technology to burn the rice husk. As a result, a complete burning of the husk will turn them into amorphous silica.

Result finding from a lab test shows that the ash is 100% amorphous.

crystallite ash is usually produced by other typical rice husk reactors used in the region. Crystallite ash could cause lung problem among the workers.

Amorphous silica ash is also an important ingredient to produce high strength concrete.

The challenges of the project is the time to build this thing, which expect at the beginning that it would take only 24 months maximum, and the crediting period would start in 2008. The 3 years delay, make the project loss a lot of opportunities not only on the CDM but also chance to utilize cheaper power for the rice mill. Reasons - This is the first of its kind to apply this technology in the world and also in Cambodia. . The project is somehow a prototype.

- lacking supply / equipment in the country.

- lacking skilled workforce in the country. - transportation issue country infrastructure.

Technological breakthrough

Indirect benefits goes to the rice industry in Cambodia which at the moment has higher operating costs than other neighboring countries (e.g. Thailand, Vietnam)

Comparison among 3 countries

Population 83 million Paddy production 35.8 million tons White rice export 6.0 million tons Paddy export - million tons

Population 63 million Paddy production 30.9 million tons White rice export 8.0 million tons Paddy export - million tons

Population 14 million Paddy production 8.0 million tons White rice export 0.3 million tons Paddy export 3.0 million tons

Recommendations on CDM rules

1. Flexibility of the verification since a plant might have some minor details different from its original PDD.

2. More flexibility on start of the crediting period (e.g. allowing to change the start of the crediting period more than one time) a project might face unforeseen difficulties from the delay of construction or commissioning.
