INTRODUCTION TO GIMPING:
The zig-zag crocodile teeth style of cutting on the edge of some shoes is called Gimping. It is machine cut, much like a sewing machine and serves not only as a decoration, but to make weakly cut edges more palatable. Also called pinking or saw-toothed. Gimped edge: This is a kind of edge treatment for an upper. It is done by Punching the raw edge of the upper to form an angle or semi-circle. Gimping is sometimes done in the edge of the sock lining of fancy shoes and sandals

METHODS OF GIMPING:
Pinking (Fenestration, Gimping.)
1. Cut zigzag and scallop decoration on the edges of the upper parts of the

shoes. [Webber, 1989] The 20th century uses the term gimping for zig-zags on brogues. 2. Punching holes in various patterns. This is sometimes referred to as Fenestration 3. Pinking the over leather, cutting the grain of the leather in to roses, knots and orderly devices. 4. (Gimping) Trimming and simultaneously decorating the edges of leather pieces. The shoemaker does this with a gimping machine in which steel tools with various patterns and designs can be fitted.

The easiest way to describe gimping is to get you to imagine a pair of brogues. You know the zigzagged, pinked edge to some of the uppers? That has been gimped. The closer will run the upper through a machine similar to a sewing machine that is fitted with sharp tools to cut the shape. Gimping in a way is the opposite of skiving. It serves to emphasize the seam. But gimping is not only for decoration, it is also said to strengthen cut edges and prevent fraying.

INTRODUCTION TO PERFORATING:
Brogueing (or Perforations) Perforating: Ornamenting of the uppers by means of series of holes of various shapes and sizes. Perforating upper. An operation used for ornamenting footwear uppers using a Series of holes of varying shapes. This gives a pleasant appearance to the upper. Permeability to air and water vapour the ability of the footwear material to pass air and water through its pores.

Brogueing or "Perforations" refers to the holes in shoes that make an ordinary shoe look snazzy. Legend holds that holes in shoes were put there by the Scottish who had to step in and out of bogs all day (back before malls were built) and they needed a shoe that would allow good drainage. This is sometimes dismissed as bunk since holes would also allow water IN.As we're no longer living in bogs, today brogueing is used to emphasize the seams that define the design of a shoe.

PERFORATING MACHINE:
This machine is used mainly for decoration punching that has a stitched border.The feeding system is not accurate enough to allow the punching of hand moccasin lacing, however plug, vamp and quarter hand lacing holes can be punched on this machine.
