From The Pastors Desk

Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! In this weekends Gospel reading from Matthew (20:1-16A), the owner of a vineyard has hired on temporary laborers at various times throughout the course of a work day. To the delight and amazement of the latecomersas well as the outrage of those who worked through the heat of the daythey are all paid exactly the same wage. Obviously, this is not a story about Gods justice I personally would hesitate to read this selection before a group of labor union members myself! After all, most people would agree with the ideal of an honest days wage for an honest days work. No, this is not a story about equity. It is, rather a story about Gods mercy Gods hesed or loving kindness. And throughout the teachings of Jesus, Gods mercy invariably trumps Gods justice. Hence, the unapologetic owner challenges his interlocuters: Are you envious because I am generous? And for us sinners, recipients of Gods generosity, thats very Good News indeed. God is not only tremendously merciful with us: God is also amazingly patient. God is ready to wait for as long as it takes for us to get itto come to a genuine, heartfelt recognition that God is in charge of things. And that God really and truly does care for useach and every single one of uswith a deep, infinite, and abiding Love. Many of us have taken the scenic route to discovering, or better yet, rediscovering our faith. For some of us, this essential understanding of who we are and whose we are comes only after weve hit the wall of our own self-centeredness or imagined self-sufficiency. Its only after weve reached some kind of dead end or moment of crisis a cancer diagnosis, a failed relationship, a spiritual/ physical/ emotional/ financial bottom from addictive behaviors, or a moment of deep personal lossthat we seem to be able to come to our senses and come to God. And where is God in all of this? Incredibly, God is waiting for usnot with a prepared lecture or condemning glancebut with open arms, ready to welcome us home to His Love. No questions asked. Walk -ins and Latecomers Welcome reads the sign on Gods door. And thank God for that; otherwise, many of us would be in very deep trouble. The truth is simple: God welcomes us one and all-- the washed and the great unwashed alike-- with the same gracious acceptance, compassion, and love. Nothing else matters at all.

Elsewhere in the Parish

This Sunday, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sundaya moment for all of us to stop and reflect on the way in which we work as a parish family to pass on our beautiful Catholic faith from one generation to the next. Charity starts at homeand so does religious instruction and the inculcation of moral values. This is a major reason while our parish has been using home/ family-based catechesis for the past decade. The instruction children and youth receive in Sunday/ Tuesday classes plants the seed that is to be nurtured at home during the week. For that reason, we honor and bless all of our catechistsstarting with parents, grandparents and other family members. In a more formal way, we give thanks to God for the tremendous dedication of our Parish staff as well as the nearly 80 (!) women and men who serve as volunteer teachers in our Religious Education program and our parish school (Old Mission Montessori). This year, nearly 800 children and young people will participate in our programs. Bill Bischoff is Director of Catechetical Ministry; Elena Zavala and Larry LaGrasta work with the English and Spanish- language programs. Christie Herrera has helped to provide valuable logistical support. Many thanks and Gods blessings on these extraordinary and extraordinarily generous people! God bless, Father Chuck

No habr preguntas.
