2011
ANNUAL
R E PORT
1

On August 17, 2010, the Market Foundation celebrated its 28th anniversary and Rachel, our beloved piggy banks, 24th birthday. And in March 18, 2011, we celebrated Rachels return to the Market after a months recuperation from her run-in with a taxi. During the year, we also celebrated other feats. Firstwith your helpwe made our largest ever grants to the Markets human service programs and have now granted nearly $17 million since we began in 1982. We are proud of that number. At the same time, we see the needs of the nearly 10,000 low-income people who used the Markets Clinic, Preschool, Food Bank and Senior Center last year continue to grow. Our partnership with the Seattle Hotel Association was continued in 2010 when we were once again selected to be the beneficiary of Evening of Hope, the associations annual gala. The work of the associations 58 member hotels resulted in an incredible gift of $365,000 and we are deeply grateful. Our efforts to fund an expansion for the 28-year-old Preschool continued. With extraordinary help from the Washington Legislature and our own Senator Ed Murray we held on to the $1 million we were awarded last year and look forward to opening the new Preschool by years end. When the Preschool project is completed, it will top off our decade-long effort to refurbish and expand the Markets human service facilities, including the new Senior Center (opened in 2006) and expanded Clinic (2008).

DEAR FRIENDS,

On April 14, 2011 the Market Foundation board hosted the 28th annual Cut the Pie party and was proud to give the largest operating grants yeta total of $694,000from donations to our 2010 2011 fundraising campaigns. Heres what you made possible

None of these fabulous things would ever happen without you. We are grateful for your help to fill the Food Bank with groceries, educate the kids, feed and house the seniors, and care for the sick. We are awed by your generosity and buoyed by your commitment to the Market and its neighborhood. And we thank you with all our hearts.

2010 2011 ACTIVITY HIGHLIGHTS

We were honored to be chosen as the beneficiary of the Seattle Hotel Associations annual gala, Evening of Hope, on February 6. Millions of Seattle visitors learn stories of the Market from their hotel concierge, making this partnership with the 58 member hotels especially meaningful for us. We liked the $365,000 we received, too! Our new program, the Second Century Club, was met with generous support by a number of long-term supporters. With an initial matching fund of $500,000 made by the board and by Jeannie and Bruce Nordstrom, we were able to match donors irrevocable bequests. Donors who make bequests of $25,000 (or more) receive an immediate dollar-for-dollar match from the matching fund and enjoy an endowed fund in their name immediately, during their lifetime.

$22,000

to the Pike Place Market PDA to provide 11,000 Market Fresh coupons for the Markets lowincome residents and human service clients. Market Fresh coupons can be used to buy fresh produce at the Markets farm tables and produce stands.

The 40th annual Street Festival changed its name, theme and date to become the Artisan Food Festival held on September 25th and 26th. This years festival featured dozens of local specialty food producers, including cheese, coffee, chocolate, meat, wine and beer. Summer at the Market always features Sunset Supper and 2010 kept up the tradition when 89 restaurants, wineries and breweries served their acclaimed specialties. The cobblestones of Pike Place glowed in the moonlight and live music kept 1,200 guests dancing under the stars. Volunteers make all this happen with more than 2,595 hours contributed to produce events, assist in the office, and put their talents to use in many ways to support the Market Foundations mission.

For the past 17 years, a group of dedicated volunteers have collected unsold produce throughout the height of the summer season. Food Link gleaned 17,000 pounds of useable food that was distributed to the hungry. Rachel, our beloved bronze piggy bank, sustained injuries when hit by a taxi late on February 6th. While her injuries were not life-threatening, her wounds required a month of hospitalization at the studio of Georgia Gerber, Rachels sculptor. Hundreds of Rachels fans awaited her return on March 18th, celebrating her return to fundraising. Since her arrival in 1986, Rachel has raised $191,446 for the Markets human services. Rachels cousin, Billie, joined her in March. A model for Pigs on Parade in 2001 and 2007, Billie was recently outfitted with a bank and is now accepting donations at the Markets new Western Ave. entrance.

SENIOR CENTER
PIKE MARKET

$183,000

to the Pike Market Senior Center to cover 1/3 of all the Centers activities, including food for the breakfast and lunch programs plus the social outreach and engagement activities used by the Centers 1,100 members in 2011.

WHEN LUPE, 61, joined the Senior Center 6 years ago, he immediately
took advantage of the Employment Program by scheduling an appointment with the program manager, Cathy Cripe. In this economy, everybodys hurting so being able to go out and have money in your pocket is very positive for people my age, Lupe says. After an initial interview to identify Lupes skill sets, Cathy connected him with temporary landscaping work, something he has a strong interest in but that also helps him manage his diabetes through regular activity. At the core of the Senior Centers mission is its commitment to empower seniors to remain engaged and active in their later years. The Employment Program is one of the many ways \is has been the worst 2 years of my life the Senior Center accomplishes this. Since 1988, as far as work. \is program helps a lot the program has helped low-income seniors find temporary and permanent jobs to augment their LUPE, client of Senior Centers Employment Program income and maintain a productive lifestyle. In 2010, the Employment Program facilitated 379 job placements and now also incorporates elements of social work to improve clients general well-being and prevent barriers to their employability. The Senior Center also had 35,197 total visits from 1,111 clients seeking a safe and welcoming place for meals, wellness activities, and housing assistance. Recent cuts to government benefit programs for low-income and homeless individuals threaten the vitality of these important programs, and support from our generous community is more important than ever as the demand continues to grow. Support for our programs isnt just about the money; it gives our members a sense of self worth and independence, Cathy says. Just knowing that the Market Foundation is behind us means a great deal.

MEDICAL CLINIC
PIKE MARKET

PATIENT-CENTERED CARE. Teamwork. Trust. These are just a few of the words that describe the unique care model of the Pike Market Medical Clinics Health Housing Outreach Team (HHOT). HHOT is a multidisciplinary team of health professionals that provides on-site care to residents in permanent supportive housing in downtown Seattle.
Katelyn Millsa HHOT nurse based at Bakhita Gardens, which provides both a shelter and permanent housing for homeless womendescribes her role as a bridge that connects impoverished patients to much-needed medical care and resources. Our goal is to empower patients and help them manage their own health, Katelyn says.

Im grateful for the clinics services and I can tell that all the people really care about me and want me to be healthy.

And her team has done just that with Tracey. Tracey was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1992 but never received proper care as she faced several obstacles in her life, including homelessness and lack of insurance. When she met Katelyn in TRACEY, patient of Clinics HHOT program January 2011, they formed an instant bond and worked together to put her health back on track. Tracey was referred to a primary care physician and the diabetes education team at nearby Pike Market Medical Clinic. This coordination of care has helped Tracey become more confident in managing her health, from eating right, exercising and taking all her medications, all in just six short months. This program is excellent, Tracey says. Im not in this alone anymore. I have a backbone now with these services supporting me. In 2010, the Clinic provided 24,666 visits to 4,310 patients, many of whom had similar stories. As the Clinic faces uncertainty of state budget cuts in the coming year, continued support from generous donors will be vital in sustaining programs such as HHOT.

FOOD BANK
DOWNTOWN

$55,000

to the Downtown Food Bank to cover the costs of 10,000 bags of groceriesnearly 1/3 of all bags the bank will distribute in the coming year.

MARIANNES FIRST ENCOUNTER with the Downtown Food Bank was for community service after a run-in with the law. What was supposed to only last three months evolved into something moreMarianne has been volunteering for nearly 20 years now!
I loved the people and decided to come back and volunteer, says Marianne. I enjoy helping those in need and working here has helped me cope with my own depression. With only one full-time employee, the Food Bank is a community-run resource driven by dedicated volunteers who contribute more than 70,000 hours each year. And more than 90% of the volunteers are clients themselves, paying it forward by offering what they cantime and talent. For Marianne, volunteering at the Food Bank isnt just about handing out food, but also about forming a close-knit community with others who are experiencing similar hardships in their lives. Its not an easy thing to come to the Food Bank and admit that you need help, she says. I hope to make peoples days a little bit better by remembering their name and smiling.

\e Food Bank is a second little home for me. I have met lifelong friends here.
MARIANNE, Food Bank volunteer

The Food Bank is a vital resource for many who live in downtown Seattle, ranging from the homeless to frail seniors and even young adults who have recently been laid off. In 2010, the Food Bank started a home delivery program for residents in low-income housing around the Market neighborhood. Volunteers delivered groceries to those who are either home-bound or too frail to carry groceries from the Food Bank to their home. The Food Bank fielded 31,000 total visits from 2,000 clients and distributed more than 259 tons of food. As these numbers grow in the coming year, Food Bank manager Kevin Futhey says he hopes to expand partnerships with local companies to offer a healthy variety of proteins and fresh produce, items that tend to be lacking at the Food Bank.

ONCE A MARKET community member, always a Market community member! This is especially true for Latoya, mother of 3-year-old Orion, fondly known as Orion the Lion at the Pike Market Preschool for his wild curly hair.
Latoya first joined the Market community 10 years ago as an employee of the Soapbox. It was through her former employer that she learned about the Preschool while pregnant with Orion. After some research and a tour of the facility, Latoya knew right away that the Preschool was a perfect fit. I was hooked. This is where my child needs to be, she says. The Preschool offers a diverse and nurturing learning environment at an affordable price nearly 75% of enrolled families receive some sort of tuition assistance. As a single mom juggling work and school, Latoya says the sliding scale tuition she pays is a true blessing. This preschool is one of the best in our state, and it eases my mind to be able to have my child get a great education here without stressing about how Im going to pay, says Latoya.

To know your child is getting a great education while getting cared for, it really doesnt get any better than that.
LATOYA, mother of Preschool student

The Preschools focus on each childs unique needs and skill sets is priceless and prepares them for success later in life. Latoya mentions that Orion is pretty advanced for age; hes very articulate and loves to read books, His teachers say sometimes they forget hes only 3! In 2010, the Preschool provided 110,860 hours of high quality education and 22,986 nutritional meals and snacks for 90 children ages 18 months to 5 years. Thanks to support from our generous community, construction has begun on the Preschools new space, which is slated to open later this year.
