Review the two case studies below. Each patient is being referred to a specialist for further evaluation of a nervous system disorder. Outline characteristics of the disease each patient is suffering from by answering the questions associated with each case study. Your answers must be typed in the boxes provided, in your own words.

The medical world does not know the cause of this disease. However, it is believed that viruses or immunologic reactions to a virus, bacteria, trauma, autoimmunity, and heredity may be the cause. Research has not proven this to be fact as of yet. 3. What structure(s) and function(s) of the nervous system are affected by this disease? It destroys the central nervous system. The degeneration of nervous tissue effects the communication in the brain, nerves, muscles, and spinal cord therefore affecting other parts of the body. It is crippling disease to those who contract it. 4. What can be done to treat this disease? Doctors do not have a specific treatment and there is no cure. Physical therapy helps with using the muscles as well as muscle relaxers and steroids. Psychological counseling is recommended to help with the emotional problems that accompany this disease.
