------------------------------------------------------------------------------------HOW TO REPAIR THE ORIGINAL GDA-4164L DRIVE BY TAKING THE NEEDED PARTS FROM A GSA-H55N ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Many thanks to andrew96

for this detailed guide. 1, GSA-H55N on the left and GDA-4164L on the right, remove the 4 silver screws from the side of the drive, lift off top, apply power from a pc and press eject, once the draw is open unclip the decortive plate by carefully pulling out the bottom and gently pushing upwards

, turn upside down and remove 4 screws from the H55N and lift off the bottom plate

, remove the front of the H55N by pressing in the black clips on either side of the drive

, remove the 2 black small screws from the 4164L

, picture of the 2 drives side by side, H55n on left, 4146L on right

, gently pull the 2 white leads from the mainboard on both drives

, very gently unclip the boards on the left hand side and lift, you will see a very thin brown cable on the back left, just gently pull it out, dont pull on the board and break the cable!

, picture of the boards with all 3 cables removed but the laser cable still attached

, the laser cable needs to be removed by applying pressure on the brown part of the clip upwards, this is very fiddley and go really carefull with it

, i found by placing a small screwdriver between the dark brown plastic socket end the laser cable it is easy to tease the clip from the board, once this is done the laser cable will fall out, try on the broken 4164 unit first before tackeling the good H55N, be very carefull NOT TO DAMAGE THE LASER CABLE

, boards removed from both drives

, a bit of a closer view of the opened laser socket ( sorry about the focus, best i could get with my camera)

, next you need to get the tray out, place a flat blade screwdriver in the cog as shown and move cog anticlockwise (to the front) tray will open!

, trays open now you can see the laser assembly

, close up of the drives, next remove the 2 silver screws that hold the drive in (do not get these screws muddled up, smaller lenght ones are from the 4174 and the longer ones are from the H55N

, shows position of the screws

, now the laser deck needs to be removed, place a small screwdriver in the hole in the rubber gromet, gently lift the back of the deck, and gently push the screwdriver back, and it should push the gromet from its mounting

, this shows the front right gromet released

, do the same with the other gromet. it will look like this when removed

, lift both laser decks out and swap them over

, new laser deck ready to go into the case, do a reversal of the removal process to get the laser deck back in

, make sure the gromets are seated correctly as shown in the pic, replace the 2 screws to hold the laser in making sure they are the SHORTER ones and NOT the LONGER ones from the H55N drive

, now carefully put the new board in connecting the rear brown cable and the drive to the laser assembly

, clip the new board in by making sure the right hand side is under the plastic tag and then the left side will click over the tab

, turn the unit over, not the laser cable will most likely be very close to the socket, so it should be easy to tease the cable into the socket but remember to make sure the dark brown socket clamp is lifted so the cable goes in fully!

, cable in and brown clamp pressed down correctly

, now pop off the belt to the motor

, belt removed, turn unit over

, a out of focus view of the board showing the 2 holes on the 4146

, pop the 2 plastic tabs so the board can be lifted (only 1 tab on the H55N)

, pop the 2 plastic tabs so the motor and board can be lifted away

, picture of the H55N board, only one plastic clip hole! so the plastic tab will need to be removed on the chassis, also the green LED on the front will either need to be bent downwards, or what i reccomend is moving it forward and backwards a few times until the leads become brittle and the led falls off the board

, this shows the board mounted in the chassis, MAKE SURE BOARD IS TOTALLY SEATED ON THE CHASSIS, connect the wire to the main board by pushing it into the socket

, now the bottom plate needs the heat conducting material moved slightly, peel it off both bottom plates so you have 2

, carefully position it to the rear of the position it was, this picture shows where to position it

, place the second heat conducting material on top of the first so its a double layer, it should match up and over the ic on the board when fitted back on

, (no pic) place the bottom plate on, put the 2 small black screws in, place the top cover on, screw the 4 silver screws back in, and make sure drive is jumpered to master! job done!! notes: - each number matches to the correspondent picture in the archive. - if you experiments burning problems with such modified drives, you can use the H55N@H50N firmware available on this site.
