ZINC CHROMATE

Substrates fabricated of metals such as aluminum, magnesium, or steel are protected from corrosion by various paints that are alkydic-, vinylic-, or epoxy-based. However, metal treatment before painting can have a great impact on the lifetime of the substrate. One common metal treatment is using a zinc chromate primer. These primers are known to provide enhanced corrosion resistance and paint adherence. Zinc chromate coatings retard or prevent the formation of corrosion products, i.e. the formation of white corrosion products on zinc alloy castings and hot-dipped galvanized surfaces exposed to stagnant water, high humidity atmospheres, saltwater and exposure to cyclic condensation and drying. As a primer used to prevent the intrusion of corrosive matter is applied to parts such threaded holes, fasteners and inserts. Using the zinc chromate primer aids in precluding moisture entry as well as inhibit corrosion. According to Federal Spec. TT-P-1757 (Primer Coating, Alkyd Base, One Component), Zinc Chromate coating ranks as Class C (Chromate based corrosion inhibitors). It can be supplied either in pressurized container (aerosol) or in non-pressurized container. The primer colors consist on Deep Yellow (color Y), or Green (color T, FED-STD-595, color number 34151). There is an order placed for aerosol type, yellow, 5.95 $/can, 11.5 Oz/can. Vendor: Everseal There is a serious health concern in the using of this material. Zinc chromate primer for galvanic corrosion protection of threaded fasteners used in engines is target HazMat process. Target Chemical: Chromium -----------------------------------------------------------------------Current Process: Manual coating process - zinc chromate primer -----------------------------------------------------------------------Material Applications: Galvanic corrosion protection for inserts and fasteners in aircraft engines Although zinc chromate primers offer several advantageous properties, their use of chromium is strictly regulated due to the compound's toxicity and suspected carcinogenicity. For example, regulations pursuant to the Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) contain provisions that regulate waste streams from painting operations that contain chromium. In addition, worker exposure to chromium in the workplace is regulated by the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) based on stringent permissible exposure limits. These regulatory driving forces are increasing manufacturing costs and causing industry to identify, evaluate, and implement acceptable alternatives to zinc chromate primers. Human Health Hazards Zinc chromate with zinc hydroxide and chromium oxide is recognized as a carcinogen substance. Alternatives to Zinc Chromate Primer: - Alumazite ZDA - TT-P-664D High solids (Zinc Phosphate) primer - TT-P-645B Zinc Molybdate primer - ZRC cold galvanizing compound
