What does that mean and how are we doing it? We have many initiatives designed to make it easier for you to get involved and informed on whatever you think is important or actionable. If you have a particular topic youre interested in, its as easy as letting us know and we can:

Bring in an expert speaker to talk about it in a seminar or workshop setting


OR

Direct you to internship, exchange, or volunteer opportunities that will develop your knowledge on the subject
OR

Mind Change: The New Climate Change?


Jonah Lecture: Baroness Susan Greeneld Greenelds talk will address the evolution of the human brain to adapt to our changing technological circumstances, especially screen technology. During her lecture she will speak to the question: If the 21st century environment is changing in unprecedented ways, will the mind of upcoming generations also be changing in ways that are unprecedented?

Cinema Politica: Blood on the Mobile


Organized by: Cinema Politica We love our cell phones and the selection between dierent models has never been bigger. But the production of phones has a dark, bloody side. Director Frank Poulsen travels to DR Congo to see the illegal mine industry with his own eyes. He gets access to Congos largest tin-mine, which is being controlled by dierent armed groups, and where children work for days in narrow mine tunnels to dig out the minerals that end up in our phones. Blood in Mobile is a lm about our responsibility for the conict in the Congo and about corporate social responsibility.

Outing Our Canadian Post-Modern Tyrant


Part of: Atlantic Provinces Political Science Association Peter H. Russell is a professor emeritus of political science at the University of Toronto where he taught from 1958-1996. He is past president of the Canadian Political Science Association, an ofcer of the Order of Canada, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and holds honorary degrees from a number of universities and the Law Society of Upper Canada. One of Canada's leading constitutional scholars, he is the author of the recently published Two Cheers for Minority Government: The Evolution of Canadian Parliamentary Democracy, and the co-editor of Parliamentary Democracy in Crisis, a book of essays on the 2008-2009 Canadian prorogation crisis.

Presented by: Centre for International Studies The Professor Research Panel allows the chance for interested members to hear about what our newest professors do outside of the classroom. Professors from a variety of disciplines will be presenting on their research.

Dr. Hans von Sponeck

CIS Opportunities Presentation


Presented by: Centre for International Studies Student Coordinators Sasha Van Katwyk and Amanda Bergmann will begin this presentation by outlining what CIS is, what it has done in the past, and what it can do for you. Come down to learn about such initiatives as working groups, upcoming conferences and speakers, and how you can become a volunteer for CIS. Afterwards, join us for a Meet-and-Greet with fellow CIS members and coordinators, complete with deals on food and drinks for CIS members.

Dr. Hans Von Sponeck, former Assistant Secretary-General to the UN and the Head of the UN Humanitarian Mission in Iraq prior to 2003, will be presenting on the possibilities and realities of United Nations Reform. Additionally, Dr. von Sponeck has offered to host a 5-day seminar relating to issues of the Middle East and South Asia, both areas of which he has extensive knowledge. CIS is currently working to offer credit for participation in this seminar. Professors and students interested in taking part are encouraged to contact us (cis@mta.ca), as the precise topic of the seminar will be determined by participants. Date to be determined.

RUN THE WORLD


----Global Simulation----

March 10, 2012; Registration open

Presented by O.S. Earth and the Centre for International Studies, Run the World is a 3.5 hour simulation that enables participants to adopt the roles of global leaders in governments, corporations, banks, NGOs, the media, and civil society. In these roles, participants control the global economy, citizens rights, world health, global politics, and the planets scarce resources, all while ghting and cooperating with one another. If you ever thought you could run the world - this is your chance to prove it. !
