A (re)introduction to CIS
designed to engage participants across disciplines in critical learning, dialogue, and innovative collaborative action on pressing global issues
What does that mean and how are we doing it? We have many initiatives designed to make it easier for you to get involved and informed on whatever you think is important or actionable. If you have a particular topic youre interested in, its as easy as letting us know and we can:
Direct you to internship, exchange, or volunteer opportunities that will develop your knowledge on the subject
OR
Design a conference or Working Group to address the topic in more intense detail
OR
Listen to your idea of how to pursue it and well devote our resources to making that happen!
As a joint student-faculty run organization, our interests are as diverse as you want them to be. Thats what it means to be a member of CIS. Welcome, and we look for ward to hearing from you!
We are coordinating expert speaker events now! If you want certain topics addressed, contact us at cis@mta.ca
Dr. Hans Von Sponeck, former Assistant Secretary-General to the UN and the Head of the UN Humanitarian Mission in Iraq prior to 2003, will be presenting on the possibilities and realities of United Nations Reform. Additionally, Dr. von Sponeck has offered to host a 5-day seminar relating to issues of the Middle East and South Asia, both areas of which he has extensive knowledge. CIS is currently working to offer credit for participation in this seminar. Professors and students interested in taking part are encouraged to contact us (cis@mta.ca), as the precise topic of the seminar will be determined by participants. Date to be determined.
Presented by O.S. Earth and the Centre for International Studies, Run the World is a 3.5 hour simulation that enables participants to adopt the roles of global leaders in governments, corporations, banks, NGOs, the media, and civil society. In these roles, participants control the global economy, citizens rights, world health, global politics, and the planets scarce resources, all while ghting and cooperating with one another. If you ever thought you could run the world - this is your chance to prove it. !
