Writing In writing our workshop routine is in place. This week we focused on narrowing our topics. Students were encouraged to write about recent events from their own lives. We then narrowed our focus into what is called a small moment. Small moments are easier to control for our young authors. Shared Reading Each month students are introduced to a new author. We read many books from the selected author and try to learn about their lives too. My thought is by the end of the year, your child will be friends and have many favorites written by 10 authors!

Math Workshop In math we identified, explored and compared different coins. We learned a new game to practice skills of exchanging coins for those of greater value. In addition, we began playing with numbers with the game The Number of the Day. The object was to list as many number sentences that equal an identified number. This exercise supports building fluency with number facts, identifying patterns in math and understanding the commutative property. Try it at home with any number! Readers Workshop This week we continued working on building stamina. Stamina is the strength or our reading muscles. In addition, we talked about taking care of books and how to put them back into our class library. Literacy Stations Literacy stations are the independent stations that students work through while I am pulling small groups for reading instruction. Because of the demand for independence, this takes awhile to teach and practice. There are 12 stations available for
