Notes for DC Motor Lab

1. DC motor theory

A DC motor works by converting electric power into mechanical work. This is accomplished by forcing current through a coil and producing a magnetic field that spins the motor. The simplest DC motor is a single coil apparatus, used here to discuss the DC motor theory. The process can be explained in further detail by observing the diagram below.

In this diagram, the voltage source forces voltage through the coil via sliding contacts or brushes that are connected to the DC source. These brushes are found on the end of the coil wires and make a temporary electrical connection with the voltage source. In this motor, the brushes will make a connection every 180 degrees and current will then flow through the coil wires. In the 0 degrees diagram, the brushes are in contact with the voltage source and current is flowing. The current that flows through wire segment C-D interacts with the magnetic field that is present and the result is an upward force on the segment. The current that flows through segment A-B has the same interaction, but the force is in the downward direction. Both forces are of equal magnitude, but in opposing directions since the direction of current flow in the segments is reversed with respect to the magnetic field.

In the 180 degrees diagram, the same phenomenon occurs, but segment A-B is forced up and CD is forced down. In the 90 and 270-degree diagrams, the brushes are not in contact with the voltage source and no force is produced. In these two positions, the rotational kinetic energy of the motor keeps it spinning until the brushes regain contact.

An H bridge is an electronic circuit that enables a voltage to be applied across a load in either direction. These circuits are often used in robotics and other applications to allow DC motors to run forwards and backwards. H bridges are available as integrated circuits, or can be built from discrete components

The term H bridge is derived from the typical graphical representation of such a circuit. An H bridge is built with four switches (solid-state or mechanical). When the switches S1 and S4 (according to the first figure) are closed (and S2 and S3 are open) a positive voltage will be applied across the motor. By

opening S1 and S4 switches and closing S2 and S3 switches, this voltage is reversed, allowing reverse operation of the motor. Using the nomenclature above, the switches S1 and S2 should never be closed at the same time, as this would cause a short circuit on the input voltage source. The same applies to the switches S3 and S4. This condition is known as shoot-through. The H-bridge arrangement is generally used to reverse the polarity of the motor, but can also be used to 'brake' the motor, where the motor comes to a sudden stop, as the motor's terminals are shorted, or to let the motor 'free run' to a stop, as the motor is effectively disconnected from the circuit. The following table summarizes operation, with S1-S4 corresponding to the diagram above.

3. Light Emitting Diode and photodiode theory


Basically, LEDs are just tiny light bulbs that fit easily into an electrical circuit. They are illuminated solely by the movement of electrons in a semiconductor material. A diode is the simplest sort of semiconductor device. Broadly speaking, a semiconductor is a material with a varying ability to conduct electrical current.

Silicon photodiodes are semiconductor devices responsive to high-energy particles and photons. Photodiodes operate by absorption of photons or charged particles and generate a flow of current in an external circuit, proportional to the incident power. Photodiodes can be used to detect the presence or absence of minute quantities of light and can be calibrated for extremely accurate measurements from intensities below 1 pW/cm2 to intensities above 100 mW/cm2. Silicon photodiodes are utilized in such diverse applications as spectroscopy, photography, analytical instrumentation, optical position sensors, beam alignment, surface characterization, laser range finders, optical communications, and medical imaging instruments.

4. Oscilloscope
An oscilloscope (also known as a scope, CRO, DSO or, an Oscope) is a type of electronic test instrument that allows observation of constantly varying signal voltages, usually as a two-dimensional graph of one or more electrical potential differences using the vertical or 'Y' axis, plotted as a function of time, (horizontal or 'x' axis). Although an oscilloscope displays voltage on its vertical axis, any other quantity that can be converted to a voltage can be displayed as well. In most instances, oscilloscopes show events that repeat with either no change or change slowly.

Oscilloscopes are commonly used to observe the exact wave shape of an electrical signal. In addition to the amplitude of the signal, an oscilloscope can show distortion, the time between two events (such as pulse width, period, or rise time) and relative timing of two related signals. 5. Function generator A function generator is a device that can produce various patterns of voltage at a variety of frequencies and amplitudes. It is used to test the response of circuits to common input signals. The electrical leads from the device are attached to the ground and signal input terminals of the device under test. Most function generators allow the user to choose the shape of the output from a small number of options. * Square wave - The signal goes directly from high to low voltage. * Sine wave - The signal curves like a sinusoid from high to low voltage. * Triangle wave - The signal goes from high to low voltage at a fixed rate. The amplitude control on a function generator varies the voltage difference between the high and low voltage of the output signal. The direct current (DC) offset control on a function generator varies the average voltage of a signal relative to the ground.
