150th Anniversary
s I set about writing the column I felt the need to say something profound. After all, how often does one celebrate a 150th anniversary? Not often. Only once in 150 years to be precise, so this is a big deal. And the first thing that came to mind as I mulled over this fact was what the world was like 150 years ago. It is worth reflecting on I think. So many of the things we take for granted were not even thought of 150 years ago. There were no cell phones no smart phones or even dumb phones. In fact there were no telephones. There were no DVD players or even VCR players. In fact there were no televisions. There were no computers no email, no tweeting or texting or blogging. There was not even radio (Can you believe that people read books for entertainment?) W ell you get the point, when Pauline Henry financed the building of St. Lukes it was a different world. And not in insignificant ways, either. The world was still a big place. Even though there were trains, travel was difficult and slow. And the only way to get to Europe or Africa or Asia was by way of a boat. So the founders would have thought of their world and their culture in ways that are now as foreign to us as our cell phones, computers, cars, etc. are foreign to them. So 150 years is a long time and the world was much different then. But I think it might be useful to put our timeline in a larger perspective. I think many people suppose that Christianity is now losing steam and soon it will be a thing of the past. It seems that way sometimes. Although our population is growing, the number of people attending the traditional mainline denominations is dwindling. It was not that way 150 years ago, for example. W e imagine that our churches were full in those days, and perhaps they were. Certainly more full than today. But what seems so surprising to me is that 150 years in the history of the Christian Church is very little time. To illustrate this point, consider that the Church of England (the Anglican Church which is the mother Church of our Episcopal tradition) declared itself separate from the Church of Rome in the year 1534. That means that in 1861, when St. Lukes was founded the Anglican Church was about 330 years old (over twice the number of years we will be celebrating on October 15th. Seventeen years earlier in 1517 the Protestant Reformation was initiated when Martin Luther nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Church in W ittenberg.

(Continued on Page 2)

W e can gain an even larger perspective by consider that the Gospel of John the latest of the Canonical gospels was probably composed around the year 100. Matthew and Luke probably date from the 70s80s, and Mark, the oldest of the four probably from the late 60s. That means that when St. Lukes came into existence the gospels were already almost 1,800 years old. And if we allow the approximate date of 4 BCE for the birth of Jesus, that means that St. Lukes was actually founded 1,865 years after the birth of the founder of Christianity. My point is not to minimize the St. Lukes achievement in remaining viable for 150 years. On the contrary, my point is that there is no reason to believe that Christianity is going away. The church has struggled through difficult times before, and it has survived to grow stronger. There is no reason that we should not begin to prepare now for our next 150th anniversary; not by getting a caterer and fixing up the hall but by encouraging new people to join us. And we can begin that this month too, as we hold our bring a friend Sunday on October 30. W e should see this event as kicking off our next 150 years. God bless. Father Tim

Outreach
Church School / Nursery This church school year looks promising. W e have six children enrolled so far and a rotating team of teachers to enable us to offer church school every Sunday. Our class is made up of the following children: Daniella, Emma, Emily, Kevin, Sophia ,and Julia. Their ages range from 3- 6 years old. The theme this year will be animals of the Bible. The class will be studying Adam and Eve during the month of October with story and coloring books, activity sheets and Bible information cards. W e will also be celebrating the children's birthdays. Please note that there will no church school on October 16. - Barbara Kaufold ________________________ St. Luke's is supporting two outreach programs, each vital to the community. They are the Somerton Food Bank and area shelters. We need your continued support to continue these worthy projects. The Food Bank is always in need of cereal and cash donations to buy meats and maintain operating expenses. The shelters look forward to the W awa gift cards provided by your donations.

GFS NEW S: Miahs World Council Memories

I thought National Assembly was fun, but I was so off track. You don't know what fun is until you go to World Council! This years World Council took place in Ireland! It was my first time going to World Council and Ireland. We were staying at a boarding school, Kings Hospital. The weather was nice; it was just perfect! It was an experience I don't think anyone could ever forget. To meet people from all around the world in just two weeks is really just something special, and whats even better is when I made connections with girls who I can call my friends. When I first got there, I was extremely anxious to know who my roommates were and to just see friends I haven't seen since National Assembly 2010. Of course it started to rain a little bit, but it only rained a few times during our visit. A couple hours had passed by and more people started to arrive. My anxiety grew more and more, until I finally got to know who my roommates were. I was rooming with Olivia and Brooke from Connecticut and Samantha and Synae from Pennsylvania! I knew them from National Assembly 2010 and GFS meetings. During our visit, we had long meetings but that's not all we did! We got to see some parts of Ireland, and if I must say so myself, it is gorgeous! I've never seen so much green in my life. It looked like a dream, the mountains, the animals, the open blue sky. Everything was so OLD, the buildings, artifacts, and the churches. We visited a lot of churches during the couple weeks and they were all beautiful, especially Christ Church, Dublin. I felt like I was in a castle! Everything isn't old though, their fashion is up to style. When I first got there I thought I'd see people wearing long skirts and shirts, but I was wrong. They have a unique sense of style. Shorts with tights, and tights are really big in Ireland and most of Europe. Although their fashion was unique, that's not the only thing that caught my eye. They were driving on the other side of the road! I actually almost got hit by a car, instead of a car slowing down for you, YOU stop for a car.

Also their alphabet is a little different they pronounce their "h" and "z" differently. Oh and how could I forget about their cute accents! I even started speaking with an Irish accent after a few days. My experience was altogether awesome. I seriously can't wait for the next World Council in Wales in 2014! It's going to be great. -by Miah Shahene
