Daystar University Pitches its Way to Victory

Daystar University took position 3 in a competition dubbed The Pitch which was organized by Brand Kenya Board, Vision 2030 and Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM). The winners of the project were unveiled at an event held on 19 August at the Hilton Hotel. Daystars team Synergy comprised of Paul Otieno Ouko, Patience Mbunga and Paul Muiruiri, all 4th year students in the School of Business and Economics. Their lead tutor was Ms. Mercy Njagi, assisted by Mrs. Celestine Musau, lecturers in the Commerce department. The initiative, a first of its kind to be held in Sub-Saharan Africa, brought together students from 13 institutions, whose mandate was to generate key communication messages that would promote patriotism, pride and national cohesion as innovative ways of marketing Kenya as it turns 50. The competition was themed Gearing Kenya towards 50. Synergy pitched their key message as A nation on the move which emphasized the involvement of every Kenyan citizen in developing the country. Their message reiterated that the world cannot and should not ignore Kenya, thus encouraging investors and developers to consider Kenya as a preferred investor destination. Speaking after the event, members of the team expressed joy at their achievement, and thanked Gloria Kositany of CIM for encouraging them to participate. We were motivated by the fact that since we are all classmates and we considered this a noble idea, it was a chance to join others in helping with Kenyas nation building agenda, said Mr. Ouko. It was also an opportunity for the students to display what Daystar University students could do; something they took seriously. This presented a great challenge for us. Coming up with marketing ideas was very exciting as it also gave us an opportunity to market Daystar as an institution, stated Mr. Muiruri. He added that it was also an opportunity for them to gauge themselves in comparison to other universities. Synergy walked away with a Ksh 2,500 book token from CIM Kenya and a prize from Brand Kenya. The winning team, which received full-year CIM membership, CIM shield for a year, Brand Kenya Board prize and BPP prize, will be part of the Private Public Sector Technical team, which will be responsible for steering the Gearing Kenya towards 50 Marketing strategy.

Daystar Universitys Ladies Volleyball Team Prepares for International Premier League
The Daystar University ladies volleyball team has embarked on preparations for the upcoming premier league. The team watched the live on-going international games at the African Nazarene University last Saturday 20 August 2011. The aim of attending and watching the international games was to have the ladies acquaint themselves with more skills from our international opponents, said Mr. Raphael Ebanda, the ladies volleyball coach. These skills will help us in preparation as we look forward to winning in the national premier league games to be held around December this year, he added. The volleyball team through the Daystar University Student Association (DUSA) sports docket has already put plans in place for the team to participate in the national premier league games. I have discussed this matter with the relevant authorities who include Sports Officer Mr. Maurce Masiga and DUSA sports secretary- Athi River, and we have agreed that the team will enroll and participate in the national premier league, said Mr. Ebanda. We have confidence that the team is going to perform well, he added. The volley team has resumed its practice sessions in Athi River campus, and is expected to watch the finals of the international premier league games at the African Nazarene University.
