PROJECT NAME: Pamarutan Village

DSCA PROJECT NUMBER:

ODC PRIORITY:

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Construct 150-foot concrete pier on pilings at beach area of village at a location
determined based on evaluation of wave/wind directions, shoreline and offshore features,
and village input. Pier designed to accommodate major storm events and small boat
landings at village.

Provide sealed well head and hand pump for village water well. Well is approximately 4
feet in diameter, a depth to water of 5 to 10 feet, has 3 feet of standing water, and
connects to an aboveground water storage tank. Discharge pressure head for pump will be
designed to allow hand pumpage into the aboveground tank.

Project will also include demolition of existing latrine facility and construction of a new
latrine building with three toilets, with new latrines connected into new septic system and
drain field. Sinks for hand washing will be installed adjacent to the new latrines.

SITE DESCRIPTION: Parmurutan Village is located on Lembeh Island accessible only

by sea. Site includes 10 to 15 small houses, a public bathroom facility, and an existing
open water well with water bucket attached to rope, equipped with an aboveground water
tank that was once filled by an electric pump. Access to site is marginal, with all boat
landings required to be conducted on an open beach area, creating difficulties for
transporting equipment and materials in, and produce and other materials out of the
village. Existing toilets (2) are located in a separate building, are flushed using a water
bucket and small water tank (mende) in bathroom, and are generally in average condition,
although with a poorly functioning septic system.

PROJECT ISSUES: An appropriate location of the pier must be identified based on an

evaluation of shoreline, weather, and efficiency considerations. Permitting requirements
for pier must be identified. A hand pump with appropriate discharge pressure to fill the
aboveground tank must be identified.
