"If the Church's agenda is not The Kingdom agenda, it's the wrong agenda, no matter how good it looks or how successful it appears." ---- T. Allen Robburts +=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+ Shoulder To Shoulder #597 ---- 5/18/09 Title: ""Revival ---- Part Twelve (More On Asbury Revival)"

My Dear Friend and Pilgrim Partner: Greetings today in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Last week was an amazing week as God blessed us with both opportunities to get some significant projects done around the house and also with visits from several people who were part of our ministry in Ukraine. First, Joel and Iryna Colon spent several days with us the first part of the week. They are missionaries with Saturating Church Planting International (known as the Antioch Movement in Ukraine). Joel (American) was a key leader in the Spanish church we helped plant and often translated for Jo Ann and me as we trained the Latin American leadership and conducted seminars. He also does extensive teaching, mentoring, and preaching. I met Iryna when she served as my interpreter the last time I taught at St. James Bible College in Kyiv. She also was part of the worship team at KIBC, and they both were vital parts of our Timothy and Esther Fellowship groups. While they were with us, Keri and Igor Gonzalez dropped by with their son, Salvador, for a little reunion with the four of us. Keri (American), was a member of two of our student teams and ended up returning to Kyiv as a missionary. During that tenure, she met Igor (Venezuelan) who was one of the co-pastors of the Spanish Church. They now live in Joplin, MO, where they both serve the Lord in a house church and minister to homeless people, special needs people, and others that many churches ignore. Then, Saturday evening we were blessed to host Pastor Feng and his wife, Rebecca, as well as their son who had just graduated from Kansas State University. They provided pastoral leadership to our Chinese ministry in Kyiv before returning to China. During the first year of their ministry with us between 100 and 150 Chinese students and businessmen came to personal faith in Christ. So, it has been a busy nine or ten days. We're ready for a breather before getting on to big projects this week.

ODDS 'N ENDS: I've also been inundated with scores of reports and other bits of information that I feel are interesting and/or important. So, please indulge me as I recommend you check out the following items: + Global Day Of Prayer Coming Up: Join the Global Day of Prayer on May 31st, 2009! Last year Christians from more than 200 nations in every time zone joined together to pray for the nations. There's still plenty of time to plan for some type of observance. Visit the website for resources, ideas, and more information: http://www.globaldayofprayer.com/. + Global Progress of the Gospel by people group: The Joshua Project recently published a printable map that shows the progress of the Gospel among unreached people groups. An accompanying report states that of the 16,304 people

groups world wide, 6,652 (that's more than 2 billion people) are still considered unreached, of which 5,209 (78%) are in 10/40 Window countries (that's mainly Muslim nations). About 3,460 (52%) are small groups under 10,000 in population. A vibrant church in a large group may take the gospel to a number of smaller satellite people groups that have ethnic similarities. The largest least-reached group is the Japanese, with over 120 million individuals. The Mandarin Chinese is the largest people group, over 800 million individuals living in 82 countries. Jews are found in 126 countries, Arabs in 130 countries, and Chinese groups in 127 countries. India has the largest number of ethnic people groups with about 2,500 in the Joshua Project database. Other ethnically rich nations are Papua New Guinea with 878 people groups, Indonesia with 768 and Nigeria with 521. There are approximately 6,900 total languages in the world, about 400 of which are considered 'nearly-extinct'. Approximately 2,500 languages have substantial parts of the Bible, and 4,695 have at least one Bible portion. While this covers 95% of the world's population, it still leaves about 2,500 languages needing Bible translation work to begin. Of the unreached people groups, 3,314 are primarily Muslim, 2,538 Hindu, and 569 Buddhist. Of the world's 16,304 ethnic people groups, 6,681 (41%) are primarily Christian, totaling over 2 billion people, or nearly one third of the world's population. Of 236 total countries, 169 (72%) are Christian-majority countries. Go to http://www.joshuaproject.net/assets /JPProgressScaleMap.pdf to see the entire report. + Kenya: Prime Minister Odinga baptized: Last month Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga announced his conversion to Christ during a mass prayer meeting in the Rift Valley town of Nakuru. Last week he was baptised in a swimming pool by prophet David Owuor of the National Repentance and Holiness Ministry, in a private ceremony attended by a handful of journalists and evangelical Christians. You can see Raila Odinga's baptism video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGjRhJ03e4 . + Genetic Homosexuality is unsupportable: Last week I read an interesting article concerning the American Psychological Association's conclusion that there is no evidence that homosexuality is genetic in nature. (So, what else is new?) To read the article for yourself, go to http://www.onenewsnow.com/Culture/Default.aspx?id=528376. + Changing Customs Laws Become Obstacles to Ministry: I stumbled onto a very interesting article last week (see http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2009/june/1.13.html) concerning how customs laws around the world are making Christian ministry activities more and more difficult. Famous Gospel song writer and composer of "He's Alive!", Don Francisco, was treated like a criminal when he was detained and then refused entry into England for a gospel concert. You may find the article interesting, and perhaps even important if you are one who travels internationally to minister. + The Global Destruction of Free Speech: Along with Don Francisco's experience, there is a growing global epidemic of trying to squelch free speech, particularly if it is not politically correct, or if it appears it might be offensive to Muslims. Take a look at http://www.humanevents.com/article.php?id=31858 to read a very interesting article on the subject. This is further evidence of our drawing rapidly closer to Christ's return . . . globalism not only involves economics and governments, but now the ability to speak one's convictions and beliefs without retribution if it doesn't fit acceptability by a handful of secularists. + The Next Supreme Court Justice: Last Saturday, Fox News reported that a recent poll showed that when President Obama selects a Supreme Court justice to replace retiring Justice David Souter, over 62% want a justice who will make decisions based on the principles and intents of the founding fathers, and only 26% want someone who is more progressive. This is indication of a steady philosophical and values shift back toward the center and center-right. + Majority of Americans Now Pro-Life: A recent Gallup Poll revealed that the majority of Americans are now Pro-Life rather than Pro-Abortion or Pro-choice. You can read the article in its entirety at http://www.onenewsnow.com /Blog/default.aspx?id=530708. Writer for the Millennial Perspective, Elijah Friedeman reported that the following question was posed on the Gallup poll: "With respect to the abortion issue, would you consider yourself to be pro-choice or pro-life? For the first time since Gallup started asking this question in 1995, the majority responded pro-life, with 51% indicating such, and only 42% indicating they were pro-choice. There has been a radical shift in recent years from pro-choice or pro-abortion to pro-life. Fox News recently did a similar poll in which they saw 49% pro-life response and 41% pro-choice, a significant downward shift in pro-choice and upward shift in pro-life. Friedeman said, "With a president who is one of the worst presidents ever on the issue of abortion it is important that those who know that abortion is wrong stand their ground. These polling numbers represent what I hope is a radical shift in the way that people view life in America. If the pro-lifers start voting with their beliefs, then abortion could be ended in this nation during our lifetimes". You can read the complete poll results here. One of the Fox News commentators said that this shift was due to a large extent because young people and young adults are changing their values in regards to the sanctity of life, believing that life is more important than personal

convenience or preference.

+ Saving American Jobs? I don't know how much good this will do, but a cousin of mine sent an article suggesting two very simple actions that might possibly help Americans keep their jobs. First, many American companies outsource their phone services to centers in other countries. The suggestion is that, if someone with a non-English accent, you can ask for a native English speaker or a service rep in America, and they are required to transfer you. That helps reinforce the need for the native English speaker's position. A second suggestion was that you never use the self checkout counters, but always go through a checkout line with a live cashier. Don't know if it will work, but it's worth a try. + A Proposed Bill to Annually Recognize America's Christian Heritage: U. S. Representative Randy Forbes of Virginia has introduced H.R. Bill 397, co sponsored by twenty-five House members, that itentifies some 90 historical examples of America's Christian heritage. It has been referred to the Committee On Oversight and Government Reform. Take time to go to http://fota.cdnetworks.net /pdfs/2009-05-13-hres397.pdf and read it in its entirety. If you'd like to view a short video, take time to go to http://www.citizenlink.org/videofeatures/A000010012.cfm. It is very enlightening. Then, urge your Congressman to support the bill when it comes for a vote.

MORE ON THE ASBURY REVIVAL: Thanks for the encouraging words on this series on revival. Especially thanks to those who expressed appreciation for last week's example of a modern-day movement of revival. As I was researching the events of the Asbury Revival, I ran across the article from the Lexington Herald Leader newspaper, prepared by a staff writer as the revival was going on. This article is also posted on the website for "The Forerunner" web-azine and a fascinating account of the revival (http://www.forerunner.com/forerunner/X0585_Asbury_Revival_1970.html). In order to shorten it and make it more applicable to today, I've taken the liberty of deleting several irrelevant statements. It's my understanding that a 40 minute DVD containing eye-witness accounts of the revival can be secured through that website as well. A Revival Account Asbury 1970 By Editorial Staff (Lexington Herald Leader) As Re-published and modified on "Forerunner" website in March 2008. WILMORE, Kentucky One morning in 1970, without warning, all heaven broke loose during Asbury Colleges 10 a.m. chapel service. When you walked into the back of Hughes Auditorium there was a kind of an aura, kind of a glow about the chapel, said Dr. David Hunt, a Louisville physician who was then a student. I always have been reminded of the verse Take off your shoes, for you are standing on holy ground. You just walked in and sensed that God had indeed sent His Spirit. The service, a routine meeting, was scheduled for 50 minutes. Instead, it lasted 185 hours non-stop, 24 hours a day. Intermittently, it continued for weeks. Ultimately, it spread across the United States and into foreign countries. Some say it is being felt even today. This year marks the [39th] anniversary of the landmark 1970 Asbury College revival, an unplanned, unled display of fervor that has been compared to the Great Awakenings of 1740 and 1800. This year is also the [59th] anniversary of a strikingly similar revival Asbury experienced in 1950. A bigger outbreak a global revival, in fact will begin soon, [said] David McKenna, president of adjacent Asbury Theological Seminary, in his [timely] book, The Coming Great Awakening. The revival might not start at Asbury, but it probably will begin on campuses, says McKenna, a noted author. He travels to many colleges and says, I see the signs wherever I go. Those signs include a generation of students wounded by family breakdowns and searching for spiritual fulfillment. Much of the coming revival will be a delayed reaction, McKenna thinks, to what happened at Asbury College 20 years ago.

A Baptism of Love On February 3, 1970, students and faculty members had shown up at the colleges chapel, Hughes auditorium, for what they assumed would be one more routine meeting. Students were required to attend chapel services three times a week. Asbury, in Wilmore, a city of 4,300 about 16 miles south of Lexington, is an interdenominational Christian college whose roots are in the Wesleyan tradition of the Methodist church. (John and Charles Wesley, brothers, were 18th century revivalists.) On that Tuesday morning in 1970, Custer Reynolds, Asburys academic dean and a Methodist layman, was in charge. President Dennis Kinlaw was traveling. Reynolds did not preach. Instead, he briefly gave his testimony, then issued an invitation for students to talk about their own Christian experiences. There was nothing particularly unusual about that. One student responded to his offer. Then another. Then another. Then they started pouring to the altar, Reynolds said. it just broke. Gradually, inexplicably, students and faculty members alike found themselves quietly praying, weeping, singing. They sought out others to whom they had done wrong deeds and asked for forgiveness. The chapel service went on and on. Asbury, like many evangelical organizations, held annual, scheduled revivals with guest ministers and services booked in advance. This, however, was not the same. No one had planned it. No one was leading it. "There was just a different feeling about that day, said Marilyn Blackburn, who was the a junior at the college. She is now a substitute schoolteacher in New Jersey. People didnt want to leave she said. They were afraid they would miss something wonderful. J.T. Seamands vividly remembers. Seamands, now retired, was then a professor at adjacent Asbury Theological Seminary, which is a separate institution from the college. He and his wife, author Ruth Seamands, were waiting for their daughter to come home from lunch. Sandra Seamands, an undergraduate at the college, was late. She burst through the door and exclaimed, You simply wouldnt believe whats happening at the college, according to J.T. Seamands' book, On Tiptoe With Love. She was right. Her dad didnt believe. Eventually, he went to Hughes Auditorium to investigate. The 1,500 seat chapel was packed. When he entered, J.T. Seamands felt as if he had been baptized in an unaccountable spirit of love, he said. His skepticism vanished. I said to myself, This is not of man, he recalled recently. This is of God. The Lord walked in Reynolds, the dean, called Kinlaw, the president, who was at a conference in western Canada. Kinlaw, like Seamands, had reservations about the revival. He returned to the campus two days later, in the wee hours of the morning. The meeting, he found, was still going. I was scared, Kinlaw said. That is, he knew he would be held responsible if matters got out of hand. At the same time, he didnt want to intervene and quench an authentic move of God. It was after 2 a.m., but Kinlaw walked to Hughes Auditorium and sat on the back pew. He was approached by a student who asked for his counsel. Though no one knew it, she said quietly, she had been a habitual liar. She needed to make reparations to people on campus she had wronged. Soon Kinlaw, too, was convinced that the revival was legitimate. Later, a reporter asked him to explain the outbreak. I said, Well, you may not understand this, Kinlaw recalled, but the only way I know how to account for this is that last Tuesday morning, about 20 of 11, the Lord Jesus walked into Hughes Auditorium, and Hes been there ever since, and youve got the whole community paying tribute to His presence. It got real quiet, Kinlaw said, chuckling at the memory of the reporters response. Twenty years later, Kinlaw acknowledge[d] that people might reasonably think the revival was the result of contagious emotions among students. It was after all, the Age of Aquarius, a time of runaway emotions of many kinds. Theres psychological factors involved, Kinlaw agreed, because were psyches . But theres something beyond that. One remarkable thing, given the youthfulness of the worshipers, he said, was that the marathon service was uncannily orderly. Worshipers did not become loud, did not speak out of turn, did not fall down on the floor in religious ecstasy. The feelings were subtle yet, in their own way, overwhelming. Blackburn, the schoolteacher, said she had always been too

meek. I became aware that I needed more boldness in sharing my faith. The Revival Spreads News of the revival spread in newspapers and on television. Strangers flocked to Wilmore to worship with the students. Asbury officials dismissed classes. By Thursday, a revival had broken out at the seminary, across the street from the college. Leaders of other institutions read of the service in publications as far-flung as The Indianapolis Star, the Chicago Tribune, The Seattle Times and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and heard of it by word of mouth. They invited Asbury students and faculty members to come and tell what was happening. One of those who went out to speak was Blackburn, the woman who had been shy about her beliefs. Wherever the Asburyians traveled, revival followed. By the summer of 1970, the revival had reached more than 130 other colleges, seminaries and Bible schools, and scores of churches, according to published accounts. It spread from New York to California, and even to South America. When several Asbury students gave their testimonies at the Miridian Street Church of God in Anderson, Indiana, for instance, the church experienced a spontaneous revival that lasted 50 consecutive nights. According to old clippings from Indiana newspapers, the Anderson church soon became so packed that the services had to be moved to a school gymnasium. Up to 2,500 people a night flocked to the gym in hopes of being touched by God. A Look at History Putting the 1970 Asbury revival in proper perspective is not easy, although Americas history is peppered with similar phenomena. The Great Awakenings of 1740 and 1800, for instance, helped change the course of American society by turning a rowdy frontier into the bedrock of Christianity. There also have been many revivals on American college campuses, dating back at least to 1795, when a famous one erupted at Yale. I would say that I think that revivals are here to stay in this country, said David E. Harrell, an Auburn University historian who is perhaps the foremost secular scholar on the subject. Several have struck Asbury. During a 1905 revival, E. Stanley Jones, an Asbury student, felt called to become a missionary, he later wrote. Jones has since been hailed as among the most influential missionaries of the century. In February 1950, another spontaneous revival roared through Asbury College. At the same time, revivals touched Wheaton College in Illinois and other campuses. A smaller revival followed in 1958. The 1970 Asbury revival seems slightly larger in scope than, say, the one in 1950, Asbury officials say. The 1970 movement lasted longer and spread farther. Still its primary explosion was shorter-lived and more localized than historys biggest revivals, said Mark Knoll, a professor of history at Wheaton College and an expert on evangelical issues. On the other hand, Harrell said, the Asbury revival occurred simultaneously with a massive neo-Pentecostal renewal in the 1960s and 1970s. The Asbury revival was not itself Pentecostal, in that there was no speaking in tongues or healing by faith. But if lumped with that charismatic movement and the born-again revivals of the mid-70s, the Asbury outbreak might be part of the most influential world-wide renewals of the century. Really, said Noll, Harrell and other scholars, it is too early to gauge the revivals true place. It often takes a generation or more for a religious renewal to be fully felt throughout society. Learned Behavior? Another complicated question is how such revivals happen. If you take a non-religious perspective, obviously, its sociological factors learned behavior, patterned response, said Randall Balmer, a historian of religion at Columbia University. His book on evangelicals, Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory, [was] made into a PBS television series. If on the other hand, Balmer said, you are inclined to attribute it to the Holy Spirit, as the people involved are, then its a miraculous visitation. Pressed, Balmer said he wasnt sure which view was correct. I guess Im not jaded enough to dismiss that it might be something, a work of the Holy Spirit, he said. At the same time, I think I recognize that the Holy

Spirit works through specific cultural and sociological circumstances

. I honestly dont know.

Asbury in 1970 certainly was conducive to a revival. The college had a Wesleyan tradition and a history of unexpected revivals. Students were not strangers to the idea. A number had, in fact, been praying for an outbreak. In addition, the campus was in an upheaval. There was the general distress of the times, and there were tensions specific to the college, stemming from a messy change in administrations a few years before. Revivals often occur in times of discord. A Coming Awakening? Thats partly why McKenna, the seminary president, [thought] a major revival could [have swept] college campuses in the 1990s. However, those campuses might as easily [have been] in Eastern Europe, Africa or Latin America as in the United States. Those societies . . . , he said, [were] suffering breakdowns of moral consensus and of institutions of authority. Today in this country, too, countless thousands of students have been hurt by broken homes and childhood abuse. Youre really talking to a stressful, wounded group of young people, McKenna said. They become the ones who are needy and responsive. In December [of 1990], 18,000 students from many different nations gathered at the University of Illinois for Urbana 90 a triennial rally sponsored by InterVarsity Missions. McKenna [felt] that the meeting might [have sparked] another Great Awakening, a multinational, multiethnic one. Some of its leaders might [have been] the same people who were touched by the 1970 revival, who [were by 1990] middle-aged and [holding] positions of church and college leadership. An Open Matter In the end, it is impossible to say empirically what happened at Asbury College in 1970, or in the many great revivals throughout Western history. Or what will underlie any revival to come. Experts say revivals result when cataclysmic religious, cultural and historical movements collide. Whether God is present in those collisions is less clear. Noll, the Wheaton professor, said that the truest test of that is whether the revivals produce lasting changes in peoples lives. Super Bowls create mass excitement, he said, but they dont alter human beings forever. Unfortunately, the long-tern effects of revivals on individuals have received little academic attention. If permanent change is indeed the test, then the issue was decided long ago for many of the people who witnessed the Asbury revival. It was a real turning point, I think, where I sensed that God really desired more of a commitment on my part of my life to Him, said Hunt, the doctor. You stand in that kind of presence and that kind of awe its very difficult, I think, for a mortal man not to really look and examine and say, What does this God want of my life? In the 1970 book One Divine Moment, Jeff Blake, then an Asbury history major, described the revival as a 20th century day of Pentecost. In the Bible, the day of Pentecost was when God poured out the Holy Spirit on His apostles and created the Christian Church. Today, I believe thats true, said Blake, [then] with Goodwill Industries of the Bluegrass. It was the kind of moment that only God could create, Blake said. Its just the kind of experience that lives on with you always. Blackburn, the formerly meek woman, agreed. I changed, she said. I was different. She remains awed that she was allowed to see with her own eyes the outpouring, she said. It left her confident that God is in control of the world and of her life. Kinlaw, the Asbury College president, started that long-ago week as a doubter of the revival. He ended as a believer in the revivals power and truth. He is a believer now. There was this sense of the divine presence that one doesnt have often in his life, he said. And when you do have it, you never quite get over it You know [that] you know. You know it in your bone marrow.

Finally: As I begin to wind this series down with just one to three more letters, it's my prayer that your heart has been stirred for a fresh move of God. However, keep in mind three very basic truths about revival. First, it is personal before it is corporate

or territorial. Second, it requires a insatiable craving spiritual appetite for God. Finally, revival is not the objective, but simply a process God will use to bring you to where you really see the big picture. Revival is never an end in itself . . . never. I will touch on those matters in my next letter. In the meantime, . . . . get hungrier for God ---- more of Him and less of you and your little world.
