IC : 911226-03-5036 The Termination of English Language Usage in The Teaching and Learning of Mathematics and Science. I agree with the termination of English language usage in the teaching and learning of Mathematics and Science because the teaching of mathematics and science in English the last six year has not improved the performance of students in those subjects. This is because many children from poor rural areas were failed by the program. There have been changes but just in a little part only. Urban candidates performed better than rural candidates. Rural candidates have problems in learning English language since they have been grown with their mother tongue language and have problem to go to school. There just several teachers dare to go to rural area although the government gives alliance to them. Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, our Educational Minister said that there had only been a two to three percent change since the policy was implemented in 2003. This is show that the government is not fully prepared for the implementation of the policy and students are being victimized as a result. The government realized the programs failure only after six year it has been implemented. Teaching mathematics and science in English would not upgrade students English quality because if the students know what is the things in English but does not know the meaning in Malay, this will lead to confusion and misunderstanding in learning. In example, many students not have the ability to understand instruction in English most of them in rural area that have never come into contact with the language before. Learning mathematics and science in our own mother tongue may be the most effective way to master these two subjects. My own experience can illustrate that the best combination for any students is to learn mathematics and science in mother tongue language at the primary level and in English in secondary school. Most of us had no problem in mastering and excelling them. In conclusion, there are just small populations whose English skills are very good in Malaysia. Most of our schools and teaching institutions fail at preparing students and teachers to use English properly.
