SUN CITY FESTIVAL BY DEL WEBB

Del Webb Goes Pink

Saturday, October 15
Sun City Festival is once again participating in the annual Del Webb Goes Pink, a walk/run to raise money for Susan G. Komen breast cancer research. You may walk either the front nine or back nine, or both if you prefer. Interested residents may register in advance at the Member Services Desk in the Sage Center. You may also register on the day of the event outside the Copper Canyon Golf Club. The fee is $20. Proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Course Registration Begins October 3!

Sign up today at the Member Services Desk in the Sage Center for Fall Courses through the ASU Lifelong Learning Academy. The courses are open to all Sun City Festival residents. The cost of registration is $7.00 per course session. A Super Student Package is available, and allows residents to take any four (4) courses for a total of $85.00. This is a great savings for those who plan to take several multi-session courses. This fall, many popular courses return along with several new courses, some free courses, twice as many computer based learning opportunities, a landscaping lecture, and a wellness course taught by Chuck Eier, Festivals own Fitness & Wellness Director. 2011 Over-Seeding Schedule

Golf Course Closed October 10 through October 30.
Horse Race/Shootout Thursday, October 6 at 4:30 PM Cost: $5.00 per person This event is a great time! Its virtually full contact golf as your competitors egg you on, sometimes in your backswing. Two-person teams alternate their shots while the highscoring teams are eliminated on each hole until there are only three teams left. Out of those three teams, we will award a Win (1st Place), Place (2nd Place), and a Show (3rd Place). Serious golfers should leave their sensitive side at home for this event; we like to have fun!

Why Over-Seed?
Each October we close the course for three weeks to accomplish Over-Seeding. Why would we want to close the course for three weeks just as the weather is getting nice and the course is in great shape? The reason is to provide our golfers with a better playing surface and green grass during the cool winter months. If we dont go through the Over-Seed process, our Bermuda base turf becomes yellowish/brown after the first frost of the year. The Bermuda grass actually goes dormant during the cooler winter months. For this reason, we Over-Seed with Rye grass, which is a cool season grass that is able to grow in the winter months. The process starts by cutting the Bermuda grass short, a process called scalping, and reducing the water supply, thus forcing the Bermuda grass into a state of dormancy. We then seed the course with Rye grass and turn the water back on to germinate the Rye seed. Rye grass requires constant moisture until it germinates and matures. October temperatures are ideal for this process and keeps the Bermuda grass dormant. We hope this helps answer the question of Why Over-Seed? and we appreciate your patience during this process.

RESIDENT PROFILE
They... will be celebrating their 56th Wedding Anniversary this month. Pat and Ed Ristow have been happy homeowners in our community for over four years. They moved into their new house in July 2007 after living in the Denver, Colorado area for thirty-four years. Eds father, Edward Ristow, Sr., who lived with them for thirty-eight years, moved here with them at the age of 99. They were married in Plumsteadville, Pennsylvania on October 29, 1955 and will be celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary this month. Ed retired from the United States Navy in 1973 and they moved from his last duty station in San Diego, California to the Denver area. While in the service, they were stationed in Riverside, California, San Angelo, Texas, Bremerhaven, Germany, Morocco, Winter Harbor, Maine, Keflavik, Iceland, Adak, Alaska, and San Diego. After Eds retirement, they still continued to travel to Europe, Australia and New Zealand and have taken cruises on the Mexican Riviera, the Mediterranean, Greek Islands and the Baltic. Ed made a prior cruise aboard USS Intrepid in the Mediterranean. The accomodations were not as luxurious, but the price was right! They have two daughters who live in the San Francisco area and Williamsport, Pennsylvania with their families. Their son and his family reside in Arvada, Colorado. They love the lifestyle here and have made lots of new friends in this wonderful community. They have found so many activities available that it is hard to find the time to do all the things that interest them. Ed is presently trying to get a Model Railroad Club organized. He had a huge HO layout in their basement while living in Denver and would like to donate it to the club.

Exercise Not Just Physical

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C.S., Fitness & Wellness Director

We all know regular exercise does great things for the body. Being active keeps the cardiovascular system functioning effectively, maintains strength and lean muscle mass and helps fight osteoporosis. In addition, being physically fit reduces risk factors for Type II diabetes, many forms of cancer, heart disease and other chronic diseases. Equal to the physical benefits of exercise are the mental benefits of being physically active. Big benefits of exercise come from the release of compounds in the body called endorphins. Endorphins are neurotransmitters which improve mood and increase feelings of well-being. Responsible for the feeling known as runners high, endorphins have been shown to relieve clinical depression, anxiety and stress. Also, endorphin release brought about by exercise increases self-esteem and positively affects mood states such as fatigue, anger and vigor. An additional brain benefit of exercise comes via additional circulation of oxygen and nutrients. Increased and improved blood flow brought on with exercise and the resulting ongoing improvement in circulation increases brain function and assists with the growth of new brain cells (neurogenesis). With increased age comes a decline in neural connections in the brain and loss of brain cells. Exercise increases the growth of new brain cells and helps to maintain the cognitive function increase fluid intelligence (intelligence not requiring previous knowledgereasoning ability). Research shows both aerobic and anaerobic exercise provides benefits for the brain. With aerobic (cardiovascular) exercise, the goal is most days of the week for 30 to 60 minutes at a time. Effort should be at a level to require heavy breathing, though still allowing for the ability to talk. Anaerobic exercise can be performed multiple ways. Traditional strength training of two sets of twelve repetitions separated by 60 seconds rest is one possibility. Another option for anaerobic exercise is to include periods of high-intensity efforts during a session of aerobic exercise. This is often referred to as interval training. As always, check with a physician when starting an exercise program. And remember to start slowly and increase volume of exercise gradually.
