Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Stewardship: What return can I give to the Lord for all He has given to me.
Stewardship is one of those words that creates an instant image in our minds. We are often pre-disposed to presume the meaning of the term. Politicians talk of being good stewards of the public trust. Plane rides are made a little more comfortable with the aid of stewards and stewardesses. And these uses of the term fit with the secular definitions offered in dictionaries. But what about the religious context of Stewardship? The Harper Collins Bible Dictionary defines steward as: a word used to translate a number of terms and expressions in Bible; common to all is the idea of overseeing possessions, business affairs, property, servants, education, etc. Also is a sense that every Christian is a steward entrusted with a divine gift. The Faithfulls wise stewardship of gifts and talents will result in blessings and rewards, but unfaithfulness will result in judgment. This seems to conform to the common, everyday understanding of the term. At mass, we hear stewardship talked about in terms of Time, Talent and Treasure. And every year we hear from our Bishops about giving to their Stewardship Appeal. Their pamphlets divulge the diocesan sources and uses of resources and highlight the various organizations that benefit from our financial generosity. This is very good. But lets get more personal dig a little deeper. The US Conference of Catholic Bishops defines stewardship as: an expression of discipleship with the power to change how we understand and live out our lives. Disciples who practice good stewardship recognize God as the origin of life, the giver of freedom and the source of all they have and are and will be. In other words, what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Our challenge to each of us individually and to us in community in our parishes is to discern how to incorporate the Bishops definition as integral to how we live our everyday lives. How do we use our time? How do we engage our talent? How do we spend our treasure? In all that we think and all that we do, how do we glorify God and build His kingdom? How do we become better disciples? The first step is to want to. Phil 2:13 says God works in us to drive our desires and our works for His good. Our love for God makes us want to obey His laws (Jn 14:15). One must be converted in heart and mind. One must muster the courage to take the proactive steps necessary for being a disciple of Jesus. What steps? Matthew 6:33 instructs us to seek first the Kingdom. Thankfully, the Catholic Church provides a plethora of activities and exercises to pursue the Kingdom.

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus knew that Peter had the ability and the openness to Gods grace that would enable him to be a powerful witness. Recognizing him, Jesus placed Peter as the rock on which he would build his Church. Like Peter, we each have a calling as stewards of Gods Gifts. We are to listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and be prepared to step out in faith to fulfill it.

Power of Prayer
David and Jane (early 20s), were very nervous about going into the clinic and spent a long time talking to one of our counselors. They claimed not to be seeking an abortion, but that is what we hear from so many of the people we approach. It is ironic that this right is something that they seem to deny wanting to exercise. After only a short time in the clinic, they came with us to the Women Center and set up an appointment for an ultrasound at the Chicago office that same day! Please pray for this young couple. Private prayer is like straw scattered here and there: If you set it on fire, it makes a lot of little flames. But gather these straws into a bundle and light them, and you get a mighty fire, rising like a column in to the sky; public prayer is like that. St. John Vianney (1786 -1859) Join Fr. Peter on Saturdays at the Anchor clinic for prayer. Call the office before noon on Friday if you will be attending. The Office for Diaconate Formation (ODF) provides distinct ministry preparation for Catholic men discerning a vocation calling to the permanent diaconate. The ODF counsels, guides and forms men who through adult formation programs, advanced theological education or some other experience encounter Christ and seek a deeper, permanent response to a perceived call to be servants of God's people through ministry in the Church. Diaconal ministry works hand in hand with both priestly and lay ministry as a sacrament to bring about the kingdom of God. Deacons are men with a charism and a calling to radical availability for service to the People of God, the Church. The deacons vocation calls him to collaborate with the bishop and the priests in an exercise of a ministry which is not of their own but the Word of Godcalling all to conversion and holiness. It is a ministry of reconciliation, of outreach to the most marginalized and those most in need of care, of education and justice. The Diaconate was not re-instituted because we have a shortage of priests or lay ministers. It was restored as a living icon of Christ the Servant within the Church...a visible sign or sacrament of the Lord Christ himself. Interested in the permanent diaconate as a possibility, call Fr. Jarosz. Thank you to our Deacons Lillig, Storrs and Robinson, for their faithfulness to the parish, family and the diocese.

Have You Seen This?

The Door Hanger campaign is just one of the new evangelization projects for the upcoming 2011-2012 fiscal year. This was made possible through a Diocesan grant from the Catholic Education Foundation for Outreach Initiative. The title of the grant is called Its the Destination. The vision is that we are committed to Christs command, Go Make Disciples. The New Evangelization is the lens on which these initiatives will focus: "We wish to confirm once more that the task of evangelizing all people constitutes the essential mission of the Church." It is a task and mission which the vast and profound changes of present-day society make all the more urgent. Evangelizing is in fact the grace and vocation proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She exists in order to evangelize, that is to say, in order to preach and teach, to be the channel of the gift of grace, to reconcile sinners with God, and to perpetuate Christ's sacrifice in the Mass, which is the memorial of His death and glorious resurrection. (Pope Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi 14) Some of the other benefits of this Its the Destination program are Alpha, Word on Fire, and Living the Eucharist. You will receive invitations and publicity through this grant. The Diocesan Catholic Education Foundation has awarded Christ the King Parish a grant in the amount of $2,440.00 for the Its the Destination Program. For more information on the Foundation and its work to support Catholic education in the Diocese of Joliet, please call 815-834-4033 or visit the web site at www.dioceseofjoliet.org/ edfoundation.

Catholic Relief Services Responds to East Africa Drought with the Help of Christ the King Parish
The crisis in the Horn of Africa is intensifying, and extreme hunger is a harsh daily reality for more than 12 million people in Kenya, Ethiopia, Somalia and Djibouti. A famine has been declared in parts of Somalia for the first time in decades. Kenya and Ethiopia are further burdened by an influx of refugees from Somalia, many making the harrowing journey across the border and into camps like the one in Dadaab, Kenya. Sean Callahan, CRS' executive vice president of overseas operations, visited the Dadaab camps in July and was particularly struck by the number of women and children among the 1,300 people who are arriving each day. "Women are subjected to humiliation and violence during the passage to Dadaab refugee camp, and children suffer from lack of food and water," he said.

How CRS is Helping

For decades, CRS has actively worked in Kenya and Ethiopia through programs that address agricultural and water needs. Reports from the field indicate that CRS' efforts have helped ease the effects of drought in many communities. In Ethiopia, CRS is leading a coalition of humanitarian groups that has more than doubled the size of its feeding program. It is now reaching more than 1 million people affected by the emergency. In Kenya, Catholic Relief Services is working to get aid to many of the tens of thousands of famished Somalis who are pouring across the border. Through our many ongoing water, sanitation and agriculture projects, CRS is also responding to Kenyans needs during this crisis. Working with partners, CRS has been able to get some aid into the stricken areas of Somalia and is assisting displaced families throughout the country with basic necessities. To read more regarding our response to this pressing emergency, visit www.crs.org. See us on Facebook. How you can help: Please pray for the people of East Africa. Donate to the East Africa Emergency Fund or call 877HelpCRS (8774357277). Mail donations to: Catholic Relief Services, Attn: East Africa Emergency Fund, P.O. Box 17090, Baltimore, MD 212037090. Advocate: Please contact President Obama and your members of Congress and remind them not to cut programs that allow the US to respond

Horn of Africa Drought Emergency

The worst drought in East Africa since 1951 is affecting over 12 million people. The United Nations has declared a famine in Somalia. Families are facing starvation as they leave what little they have and stream into Ethiopia and Kenya in search of food. Catholic Relief Services, the official international relief and development agency of the Catholic community in the U.S., is responding by helping to feed thousands and provide clean water, shelter and other lifesaving goods. CRS is also expanding its ongoing water and agriculture projects in East Africa which have made the communities already participating much more resilient to the drought. Your continued prayers and support are needed to help address the desperate needs of our brothers and sisters in East Africa. For more information on CRS relief efforts and how you can help, please go to www.crs.org or call 877HelpCRS (8774357277). Thank you to our parishioners who already responded to this drought, from our last article in the bulletin. We need to be informed about the issues and needs of the world, which is apart of our parish strategic plan. Lets go ahead with many rosaries, adoration hours and daily sacrifices today for the people of East Africa. Fr. Jarosz
