To what extent has your study of the texts from one literary period demonstrated that context and

values are essentially interconnected?

The nineteen nineties was an era of development, prosperity and reinvention, in a post modernistic world of converging societies. It was an era typified by iconic events such as the end of the cold war, the exponential takeoff of the world wide web and rise of third wave feminism. It is the contextual values derived from these events which instil themselves in the two texts Tony Takitani by Haruki Murakami, and James Bond: Golden eye directed by Mark Campbell. Values are a set of enduring ideals, opinions or rules shared by the members of a culture about what is good and what is not. Haruki Murakamis short story Tony Takitani explicates on values concerning consumerism, globalisation The notion of globalisation represents the convergence of all culture, social and economic societies into one global village through the rapid advancements in communication. What once took months now only takes seconds, and this notion of globalisation and the values it represents is reflected inherently Haruki Murakamis Tony Takatani. The defiance of tradition is exemplified from the first line of Tony Takitani Because of his name and his curly hair and his rather deeply sculpted features, he was often assumed to be a mixed blood child. Through this descriptive excerpt, Murakami immediately instigates a notion of multiculturalism. The obviously western centric name and unusual facial features defy the tradition of Japan. This concept is obviously derived from Murakamis own life, who is an avid follower of Western culture and post modernism, similarly defying the traditions of his own Japanese background. By explicating on the subject of globalisation, he supports the abolishment of cultural barriers, embracing values of pure equality and unity. Murakami further expands on the benef Consumerism is used to describe the tendency of people to identify strongly with products or services they consume, especially those with commercial brand names and obvious status-enhancing appeal. The negative values concerning this concept Globalisation was a major component of the nineteen nineties and much like Tony Takitani, Mark Campbells Goldeneye represents a myriad of globalist and post modernistic values circulating the society of the time. The notion of globalisation is manifested primarily in the antihero, Alec Travelyan, through the subversion of traditional bond stereotypes. Traditionally the villains in previous bond movies were Russian, and Alec Travelyan as a rogue British agent represents a move away from this, to a more global society. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 represented the destruction of the metaphorically impenetrable barrier between east and west and in turn resulted in the end of the cold war during the 1990s. This fall of the Soviet Union in the 1990s is also clearly symbolised in the character, General Ouromov. Ouromov was just a useless pawn to Alec, representative of the new outlook of Western World towards Russia. Furthermore the rise of the global village is fulminated in the range of new locations the film was based. Instead of being based solely in Russia, the film was set in places like Cuba; a subtle acknowledgement of global responsibility and global awareness. However Goldeneye also embodies the fear of technology from the general zeitgeist of the time due to an increasingly interconnected world. The Hawaiian shirt wearing programmer, Boris Grishenko despite his obvious skill, is portrayed as an infantile,

immature person with anger issues. His downfalls are symbolic of the values and attitudes of the 1990s, such as the fear of technology which permeated society. The values of the 1990s surrounding globalisation are clearly depicted in the film Goldeneye, epitomizing how context and values are inherently interconnected. In addition to globalism, the 1990s saw the rise of third wave feminism, the idea that women can do whatever they please. This notion is clearly substantiated in Goldeneye, through the entire cast of leading female characters. The character Xenia Onatopp contradicts and subverts the traditional role of a bond girl by taking on a particular masculine role. While still being overwhelmingly femine, Onatopp, seduces and kills men ruthlessly, asserting her dominance as a villain and reflecting the values of third wave feminism. Subversion of the traditional Bond status quo is further exemplified through the secretary, Miss Moneypenny. In a scene from her office, Moneypenny upstages Bond by her hair, attire and remarks, I know you'll find this crushing, 007, but I don't sit at home every night praying for some international incident so I can run down here all dressed up to impress James Bond. Her explicit sarcasm overshadows Bond, and the contextual values regarding the rights of women are further reimbursed. Furthermore, the ideas surrounding third wave feminism are explicated through the character M. Customarily, Bonds boss, M, has been a male, however in Goldeneye, the role is played by a female. This subversion of the paradigm, exemplifies the equality of women and is further accentuated by her assertive attitude towards Bond; labelling him a a sexist, misogynist dinosaur. The lack of power Bond possesses over women who he would habitually reflects the myriad of values pertaining to third wave feminism, exemplifying the innate correlation between context and values.

The 1990s was also a time of reinvention and reinterpration, as the rise of post modernism began challenging the status quo. Mark Campbells Goldeneye exemplifies the rise of post modernism in the 1990s and all of its connotative values.
