Message from the Head of Department Porter

Welcome to this annual celebration of the work of our final year students.

A major feature of the Department's courses is that we expect students to demonstrate a wide range of talents –
from developing creative and innovative concepts through to the building and evaluation of their design prototypes.

As you view the student work, you will notice that some have developed skills in the areas of engineering and
technical innovation, whilst others have concentrated on sustainable, styling or user-centred needs. These particular
strengths help to identify the direction of their future careers in design.

This year we have 110 finalists who will graduate with a BA or BSc Honours degree in Industrial Design and
Technology, Industrial Design and Technology with Education or Industrial Design and Packaging Technology.
A third of these students have completed a placement year in industry. As always, we are keen to discuss future
placements with our industrial visitors to the Show.

Very best wishes for the future to all our finalists. Enjoy the Show ...

Degree Show
Committee
Welcome to the 2004 Industrial Design and Technology Degree Show. We hope that you enjoy the extensive range of work on display, which once again
proves why Loughborough University has such a high reputation in Industrial Design and Technology. The range of work provides an insight into the quality of
innovation and the capabilities of the graduating students in the Department of Design and Technology. Many of the projects are sponsored by industry.

We would like to thank the staff in the Department for all their support and dedication over the last few years. Thanks to all the students for all the hard
work and to the members of the Degree Show Committee for the many hours spent putting the Show together. A special thanks goes to Andy Higgs for
the design of the Degree Show logo.

Thank you for coming to the Show. We hope you enjoy it.

Course
Overview

Industrial Design and Technology BA/BSc (Hons) [ID&T]

This course explores and develops designers' abilities in three-dimensional designing and prototyping. It integrates the study of many design-related
subjects, whilst allowing students to maintain a focussed strand of study appropriate to their background, skills and aspirations.

Core components of the course include design practice, drawing, technology, manufacturing, CAD, design contexts and design communication. Students
are able to select from a range of optional modules to supplement the core programme. These options can include further work on core topics or develop
expertise in different specialised areas. The optional modules are also used to define the degree award of BA or BSc.

Typical BA modules include: Product Analysis, Inclusive Design, Internet & Interface for Designers, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Issues in Sustainable
Development and Systems & Environments.

Typical BSc modules include: Electronic Systems, Mechanics for Designers, Material Science, Computer Aided Modelling & Manufacture, Polymer Science
and Recycling & Environmental Issues.

Diploma in Professional Studies/Diploma in Professional Development [DPS/DPD]

The Industrial Design and Technology programme offers the opportunity to spend the third year in industry which can lead to the award of a Diploma in
Professional Studies. Industrial placements have been conducted at a wide range of companies, including Artform International, Salton Europe, Interfleet
Technology, Renishaw Plc, RNIB, Nokia UK, Morphy Richards, Land Rover, Jaguar, Diam UK, Laser Prototypes Europe Ltd, Hodges and Drake, Shades
Technics, Bosch Power Tools, A.P. Valves and Smiths Medical International.

Some students, who undertook a placement year with The Boots Company, were awarded a Diploma in Professional Development. This is a new diploma
which was successfully trialled with The Boots Company.

Course
Overview

Industrial Design and Technology with Education BA/BSc (Hons) [ID&T with Ed]
This course gives a good grounding in industrial design practice and largely parallels the three year Industrial Design and Technology degree. It is
designed to introduce undergraduates to teaching Design and Technology in schools. The course develops students' capabilities for designing, making
and communicating, as well as building an appreciation for the role of technology in society. During the second and third years the modules undertaken
develop students' understanding of the educational values inherent in these activities.

Those graduates who wish to teach will go on to complete a one year Post Graduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) course in order to gain Qualified
Teacher Status.

Industrial Design and Packaging Technology BSc (Hons) [ID&PT]

This course parallels the four year Industrial Design and Technology degree but with an emphasis on packaging technology. The students' second year
includes Product Analysis, Polymer Science and Materials Processing modules. The third year is spent on placement in the packaging technology industry.

In their final year students undertake a design project related to the packaging industry and write a dissertation on packaging legislation.
