GP surgeries to move from Hoole

TWO Hoole GP surgeries are moving out of the area to become part of a new supersurgery at the old Crosville bus depot on Delamere Street. The purpose-built Integrated Care Centre will encompass four local practices The Elms Medical Centre, Hoole Road Surgery, Northgate Village Surgery and Northgate Medical Centre . Each will relocate to the new building as well as a number of community services currently provided from St Martins clinic and Upton clinic. Patients will still belong to the same GP practice and see the same GPs and practice staff. And each practice will maintain its unique approach, and continue to offer a high standard of care. According to health chiefs, the benefits of the new development will be better access for patients to a wider range of services in one place such as: physiotherapy, podiatry, and dentistry as well as a number of services currently provided in hospital that can be more effectively provided in a community setting such as follow up care with specialists. There will also be diagnostic services such as ultrasound and endoscopy, plus a modern operating facility for minor procedures. Other facilities planned to be included are a pharmacy, an opticians and a cafe. The building will be able to accommodate the District Nursing

staff and Community Matrons covering Chester city area along with the social care team, enabling better teamwork and communication. The new building will also provide a teaching centre of excellence for primary care medical education, for doctors, nurses, medical and nursing students The developer Watkin-Jones expects to complete the work in April 2013.

Dont forget to Breathe

By Stephen Massey, chiropractor at the Ambleside Clinic
We all know why breathing is so important and yet most of do not breathe as well as we could, affecting our health adversely. How so?
1. How we breathe affects the amount of carbon dioxide and oxygen we have in our blood. Too much carbon dioxide will give us acid blood (Like too much in the air gives us acid rain). The acid balance of our blood directly affects the functioning of our hormones and almost everything else. If we breathe correctly our body is more likely to function correctly. 2. If we breathe incorrectly we may start to overuse muscles, particularly in the shoulders and neck, which can lead to chronic neck and shoulder problems. 3. Shallow breathing does not allow us to de-stress whereas deep abdominal breathing triggers the relaxation response which is the opposite of the fight/flight or stress response. In my experience, if you suffer from stress, tight muscles and general bodily discomfort, the single most effective thing you can do is to learn to breathe properly. Going and getting exercise is essential and may help aerate your body, but this is only a temporary fix if your breathing is dysfunctional. Just imagine somebody who is stressed or anxious; they are breathing fast and shallowly, or they are not breathing at all. You can try breathing fast and shallowly (if you do not have a lung problem or suffer from panic attacks) for a moment. How does it feel? Now try breathing slowly and deeply. How does that compare? When you feel angry or nervous before making a presentation the best thing to do is to stop and take a few deep breaths. When you breathe in, your abdomen should expand outwards, your lower rib cage should expand sideways and your upper ribcage should expand forward just a little. Your shoulders should not lift and

Hoole Roundabout October 2011

13

when you look in the mirror you should see no movement in the muscles of your neck. You can use your hands to feel the expansion in these different areas. Retraining breathing takes time and sensitivity. You need to practice full breathing every day for five minutes or so and you should stop and take a full deep breath a couple of times an hour. If you do this for three months you will re-programme your brains automatic control of your breath. If you find it hard and there is a lot of tension in your abdomen then you may benefit from a gentle massage. If you suffer from any heart or lung disorder please consult your doctor before trying to alter your breathing as your body may react to changes in the chemistry it has got used to. Remember dont try too hard, be gentle and allow time to change and you will really transform how you feel through your breath.

Hotel to be converted? THE Glann Hotel, in Stone Place, Hoole, could be converted into student accommodation if plans are approved by the council. English in Chester wants to use the 10-room site for visiting foreign students. This application follows hot on the heels of an application to turn the Alton Lodge Hotel into student rooms. Park and ride plan A park and ride site could be build on the green belt land near Hoole Village. The local authority has published the One City Plan which is aimed at reducing congestion in the city centre. The idea of a park and ride at Hoole Village was first suggested back in the 1990s when Cheshire County Council wanted to create a busway on what is now the Millennium Greenway. Bikes taken BICYCLES and a cycle trailer were stolen from a driveway in Sefton Road last month.

Trio celebrate victory in clubs showpiece event

THE Hoole Junior & Senior Open Tournament, held in the first week of August, was a great success! 100 people, including 32 Hoole LTC members, took part in the tournament and thankfully the weather was kind rain only stopping play on one day! A high standard of tennis was played throughout the week and the friendly welcome given by all club members made the event hugely enjoyable for spectators and competitors alike. Hopefully they all had such a good time that they will be back again next year! Hoole LTC organised and ran the tournament this year with a focus on making sure everyone played as many matches as possible. The Mini Red and Mini Orange events had the largest number of entrants and all the competitors in these events played at least five matches. For all other age groups we used compass draws to maximise the number of matches for each player and we offered extra bonus matches wherever possible. There were 12 events in total and there was individual success in the tournament for some of the Hoole LTC members who took part Emily Bolton and Evie Gordon were the Best Girl performers in the Red (8 & Under) and Orange (9 & Under) events respectively, while Maya Williams won the 12 & Under Girls event, Saleem Rizvi won the 14 & Under Boys event and Jamal Rizvi won the 16 & Under Boys event. Congratulations to all of them and well done to everyone from Hoole LTC who took part, especially to all those for whom this was their first experience of playing in a tournament. The tournament would not have been possible without the massive amount of time

and effort given voluntarily by so many club members. Ken Thomas did a fantastic job in his debut as Tournament Referee and was wonderfully supported by his wife Penny on refreshments, Sarah Rizvi coordinating all the entries and Bob Kemp, Ted Harris and Simon Wright supervising all the matches over at the Alexandra Park courts. We also owe a huge thank you to all the club members who helped out during the week of the tournament by providing wonderful home-made cakes and giving their time to help with the running of the event. Thank you to all of you and especially all the Junior members who made the Mini Tennis events run so smoothly we couldnt have done it without your help!! We hope to see even more club members taking part in the Hoole Junior & Senior Open Tournament next year and we will publicise the date of next years tournament on the club website as soon as it is confirmed by the LTA watch this space!!

Essar Oil Chester Literature Festival 14th 30th October 2011

his October sees the return of the Essar Oil Chester Literature Festival, with a plethora of events in Chester celebrating the written and the spoken word.
The festival opens on the 14th October with an appearance by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall extolling the virtues of vegetables, and it concludes with Robert Powell and Elizabeth Garvie bringing the life and works of Jane Austen to the stage on the 30th October. In all, more than 50 events will take place over the last two weeks of October, including the reappearance of GobbleDEEbook, the childrens literature festival, that will be occupying the St.Marys Centre in Chester every day during halfterm week. Other highlights include a talk by Tim Smit about his groundbreaking achievements at the Eden Project in Cornwall, a chance to hear Sir John Hegarty, the man behind such advertising slogans as Vorsprung durch Technik and Bill Turnbull of BBC1 Breakfast speaking about The Bad Beekeepers Club, his new book about his old hobby. In addition, audiences will be able to hear Peter Snow, John Julius Norwich, Sir Nicholas Kenyon, the world renowned linguist David Crystal and Suzannah Dunn, novelist and former

writer in residence on the Richard and Judy Show. The Manager of the Chester Literature Festival, Paul Lavin, said: Were truly excited by the range and depth of this years festival. From poet Wendy Cope to Amazon explorer Ed Stafford, there is something for everyone and we are particularly pleased to be welcoming local Cheshire talent too. Lunchtime readings from local authors will take place at the Wesley Centre in Chester and if you saw the magical Merlin and the Woods of Time this summer in Grosvenor Park, youll know that a discussion with its writer Glyn Maxwell and its director Alex Clifton will throw up some fascinating insights. Full details of the events can be found at www.chesterfestivals.co.uk and at www.gobbledeebook.co.uk and tickets can also be bought at the Chester Visitor Centre at the Town Hall in Chester or by ringing 0845 241 7868.

HOOLE RANGERS FC

Good reasons for optimism for both Rangers teams

HOOLE Rangers had a busy close season, we continued training throughout the summer and arranged several pre-season friendly games. We have attracted quite a few new players which will make the overall squad much stronger this year. The new season started on 20th August and as usual, the first few weeks were difficult with players being away on holiday and having family commitments. However, despite the absentees, the 1st team have played 3 league games, winning one, drawing one and losing the other. We have also won one cup game, but lost another on a really bad weekend where we had 10 regular players missing. So overall, a relatively good start which gives us confidence that this year, we will be much more successful than previous seasons Despite finishing in the bottom half of Division 2 last season, Hoole Rangers reserves were promoted to Division 1, due to teams dropping out, and many new clubs joining the league. By strengthening the overall squad, signing several new quality players, both teams are much better positioned this year and we are looking forward to the season. To date, the reserves have one league win from three games, but expect that to improve as we get all of the players available again. We will continue to train on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6.15 - 8pm at New Scene and would welcome any new players who want to come down. We are currently looking for a regular goalkeeper for the reserves so if you are interested in playing for a great club, with strong ambitions, please come training or contact us as follows Glyn Roberts Mob : 07515 805966 Glyn@HooleRangersFC.com www. HooleRangersFC.com

Laptop stolen THIEVES stole a wallet and Acer laptop from a house in Pickering Mews last month after sneaking in through an unlocked front door. Steve branches out WELL known Hoole man Steve Howe, who runs the Black and White Pictures website, is about to open a little shop in Rufus Court? His aim is to help those with art/craft ware to display their goods. He will also be running his Chester Tours from there. Greenway - not cycleway LAST month we pointed out that the cycling charity Sustrans were handing out bells to cyclists to help avoid collisions on the cycleway. Of course this should have said Greenway - as it gives the impression that the path is just for cyclists.

I AM a Freeman of Chester and am trying to put together the Roll of Honour for the Guildhall. One of the Second World War casualties is George Sumner Hewitt, son of George and Eva Hewitt from Hoole, who was killed at Anzio in 1944. He was made free in November 1939. I have very little information about him, and should be grateful if you would ask your readers if they have any, or even a photo which I could put with my research. The highest ranking Freeman is Commodore Willam Henry Kelly from Bootle, who served in both World Wars. He was awarded the DSO, and on his last voyage in 1941, aged 68, his ship was torpedoed and he was last seen standing to attention on the bridge as the ship went down. Another confirmed casualty is Lance Serjeant George Sumner Hewitt of the 7th Battalion Cheshire Regiment, who was killed on 12th April 1944, and is buried in the Beachhead Cemetery at Anzio in Italy. The Commonwealth War Graves Website confirms that he was the son of George and Eva Hewitt of Hoole, and actually states that he was a Freeman of Chester. Other than that, and despite several articles in our own magazine, I have no other information, and wondered whether any of your readers might be able to provide some more details, or better still a photograph. If and when the Roll of Honour is produced, I would like to dedicate it to Corporal Marc Taylor of REME, who was killed in Iraq in 2004, and was the grandson of my first cousin. Any help would be much appreciated. tHis year there is a bumper crop of berries to provide ornamental colour into winter. the spiny Pyracantha shrubs have red, orange and yellow berries aplenty this year so if you want a very thorny hedge with white flowers in spring and berries in autumn consider a mixed hedge with varieties such as orange glow, Red column and soleil dor (golden sun). Hawthorn trees have red berries and white or pink flowers in early summer. If you want to plant a tree have a look at Crataegus laevigata Pauls Scarlet with deep pink flowers or Crataegus laevigata Rosea Flore Plena with double pink flowers. Flowers that are in season in October include the delicate Cyclamen hederifolium which will flower into winter and look great planted under trees and shrubs that lose their leaves in autumn. They will self seed too bringing you a carpet of white or pink flowers in time. They are ideal for a dryish spot under trees. Chrysanthemums are out in late September

and October. Select hardy varieties that can be grown outside in the border or be prepared to buy new plants each year as many varieties are only half hardy and will not survive the winter if left outside. Buy bulbs of daffodils and tulips and plant in October. Wallflowers and primulas can be planted out this month for colour next year. October is also the time to plant out perennials, evergreen hedging plants and climbers before winter sets in. The soil should still be warm from summer to allow good root growth and also damp from rain enabling them to survive the winter. In the vegetable garden you can probably still plant winter lettuce seeds then cover with a cloche to supply some greens in winter. Lift pieces of mint, thyme and chives and pot up for use indoors when the plants outside die back and sow seeds of parsley to use in cooking. Make sure broccoli and Brussels sprout plants are staked. October is the time for the last cut of the year for the lawn. You can also lay turf provided the soil is moist and there are no frosts likely.

What is a Multi - Bed Clinic?

A Multi bed clinic, is where a few people are treated in one large room. Discrete screens are around each treatment area and gowns can be given for privacy. it is possible for Acupuncturist to offer this type of service because Acupuncture needles usually take 20-40 minutes to do their work, so the practitioner can place needles into one patient, leave them to relax into their treatment and move on to the next patient. The initial consultation and first treatment are on a one to one basis in a private consultation room, so all medical details can be taken in privacy, it is then when it is discussed to see if the patient is suitable for the multi bedclinic or a one to one treatment. By treating more than one patient an hour the practitioner can significantly reduce the cost of treatment, ideal for people who may be in need of a lot of treatment and for those who have a limited budget. telephone lynn for more enquires : 07870373545

tHeRe is so much talk about the state of socity in the UK and there is no doubt that the youth of our nation have the spotlight on them, however we must be careful not to view young people in terms of stereotypes and gross generalisations. The media is very good at perpetuating these. Negative media stereotypes can also influence young people themselvesa kind of self fulfilling prophecy. On a broader level, young people can be discriminated against or treated suspiciously because of stereotypes. This is very important; young people should feel embraced by their community, not alienated by it. Andy Glover has lived in There are many young people who are making a postive Hoole with his wife Sue contruibution to lifeand we can see that many in the next generation are for 22 years. Andy began in need of postive role models, the communication of good values and a moral and spiritual underatnding of life. at Hoole Baptist Church, on Westminster Road, Churches across Chester are running Open Youth Clubs on a weekly as Youth Pastor, before basis, with over 400 teenagers involved in them. A large proportion becoming the Pastor and of these are part of the DBiz Youth Work run in partnership with a local charity called The Light Project. Here in Hoole 2 DDiz Clubs are now Team Leader. running every Thursday and Friday evening. These clubs are a run by church volunteers using the experince and expertise of 2 part time Youth Workers to provide well resourced and exciting evenings of activities for young people. In fact across Chester more professional Youth Workers are employed by churches to serve the needs of the youth than by the local authority! This is only one example of such good work with teenagers we also have the work of the Scouting Movement which des an excellent work and there are many more I could mention but dont have space for. I was reading some interesting statics about Britain today recenly. While 92% of Americans believe in God, only 35% in Britain do and 43% say they have no religion, according to Britains National Centre for Social Research. The number of people who affiliate themselves with the Church of England was 23% of the population in 2009 from 40% in 1983. In truth though, if Britains Christian tradition is dying out, the leaders of the faith have only themselves to blame, for perpetuating the countrys highly centralized religious structure. You may not be surprised to know that I am convinced there is a place for Christainity to be involved in the process of forming the next generation and part of my mission in life is to make sure we hand over the torch of Christianity to the future generation. If we are to deal with the issues that are the characteristics of a society which is seriously ill, then we need to look full in the face of the problems and grasp their significance before we consider the action required. David Cameron, has said himself, There are pockets of our society that are not only broken, but frankly sick We have a moral problem not just a politcal one. For me, I belive this is the time for an authentic Christian spirituality to offer a way forward. We need to use the language of sin, of repentance, of transformation and of hope and apply it to both institutions and indivduals if we are to chart a way back from the mess we are in. Allow me to end with a quote from the political activist in the United States, Jim Wallis: The crisis of our times calls for our conversion. Our structures, values, habits and assumptions are in need of basic transformation. Neither politics nor piety as we know them will effect such a change. Rather a new spirituality is required, a spirituality rooted in old traditions but radically applied to our present circumstances
