Developers submit housing plans

PLANS have been submitted for a controversial housing development on a site off Nantwich Road, in Tarporley. Developers FLP lodged the application with Cheshire West and Chester Council for 100 new homes, including 30 affordable houses. Local reaction has mostly against the scheme. Over 650 signatures have been gathered in opposition to the scheme by the Tarporley Greenfield Awareness Project. Parish councillors have also opposed the project as it is outside the area designated for development in Tarporley. Campaigner Michael George, from the Tarporley Greenfield Awareness Project, is asking people to make an official objection to CWaC. He says the level of opposition is a clear sign that the development is not wanted. Martyn Twigg of FLP said: Tarporley has been identified by the as a sustainable

settlement that could accommodate a sizeable portion of almost 5,000 new homes required in the rural area of the Borough over the next 15 years. Whilst we know proposals for change often raise concerns for residents, we have been pleased with the level of interest shown by the community in the proposals, in particular the number of local Tarporley people who have expressed a keen interest in purchasing an affordable house on the site.

Results from the Parish Councils Questionnaire

Tarporley Parish Council carried out a survey on the views of people in the town on the proposals to build the houses off Nantwich Road. To date the council has received around 130 replies, about 10% of the villages households. The results are as follows l 95% thought that land inside Tarporleys boundary should be built on before considering building on land outside it. l 98% agreed that designated affordable houses with a value of 225,000 are beyond the reach many young people living and/or working in Tarporley. l 96% thought that the unique character of Tarporley would be changed by building an estate of around 100 houses. l 92% thought building outside the settlement boundary should only be allowed if the site is designated as a rural exception site (basically one where only affordable houses, leisure and community facilities and open green spaces are allowed). l 48% were interested in helping the Parish Council draw up a Neighbourhood Plan for the village. 6 To advertise call 01244 350398

Continually committed to cost effective and adaptable care services

It is now just over a year since we moved our business to Tarporley, and we are really enjoying being part of the community offering our very personal service to all those in need, both locally and throughout Cheshire. Current economic problems are of course, are affecting us all. With all the cut backs in Social Care I am genuinely concerned that elderly people may not be getting the care that they require. I passionately believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to live as independently as possible in a familiar environment. Can we help? Oh yes we can! Our Carers and Companions are all very flexible and the service they provide is tailor-made to suit your needs and requirements. No situation is beyond their experience or capabilities. Please do not hesitate to call us if you need any of the following services:l Live in Carers on a rota basis full time care in your own home at all levels l Daily Carers on an hourly basis part time help

with personal care and general housekeeping, transport & companionship l Respite Carers relief for family members who have appointments or need a holiday l Temporary Carers convalescence, support after an illness or rehabilitation following an operation l Companion Housekeepers general help with household duties, cooking, shopping, transport & of course, companionship The Bunbury Agency is registered with the Care Quality Commission as a Domiciliary Introductory Agency, which enables us to provide very personalised care packages, whilst maintaining the standards and regulations set down by the Commission. Apprentice Scheme available Are you aged between 16 19 years? West Cheshire College Care Services have given us the opportunity to train a local person in Business Management. I am looking for a committed and reliable person to assist my colleagues on a part time basis alongside this training. Making a difference to other peoples lives is very rewarding, so why not join the team.

Tarporley Community Centre News

Did you know:
l Tarporley Community Centre is NOT managed or financed by Tarporley Parish Council or Cheshire West and Chester Council. l A committee of volunteers who offer their services for free runs it. l Its income and existence relies solely on letting fees. l It costs approximately 1,000 per month to meet annual running costs. Tarporley Parish Council recognizes the value of the Centre and regards it as a very important village asset. A wide range of people from the village and surrounding areas, including childrens dancing and exercise classes, young peoples youth and army cadet activities and older people engaging in exercise and special interest clubs etc, use the centre on a regular basis. It is therefore regarded as being key to village life and its survival is seen as essential. The Parish Council very much appreciates the work of the committee in managing the ever-increasing amount of work in an atmosphere of constant changes in legislation particularly in regard to health and safety issues. Recent inspections, however, indicate that the centre has some urgent work to be carried out involving the upgrading of fire exits, fire detection and alarms systems and the electrical installation. Some of this work needs to be completed within four weeks and can be managed within cash reserves. An estimated total cost of 18,000 to 20,000 needs to be spent within the next three months in order to bring the centre up to required standards. The management committee is currently seeking ways of managing this situation. Perhaps not so pressing but, in addition, roof leaks are becoming more common and a recent inspection has revealed that a long-term solution is required. The wooden floors in the main hall and Craven room require attention. The management committee also has aspirations to bring the main hall audio/visual equipment into the 21st century in order to facilitate dvd/film and power point presentations. Councillor Graham Lees has been the Parish Council representative on the management committee for a number of years. He has decided not to stand for re-election at the AGM to be held in November and Councillor Linda Bennett has agreed to take over this role. The committee needs additional volunteers to come forward and offer assistance in handling routine management tasks. If you feel you could give back some time to benefit your community in this important way please contact Linda Martin on 01829 732026.

Peter wins record 11th title

DESPITE the blustery conditions Tarvin Tennis Club witnessed some hard-fought, quality tennis at their Finals Day event held on 11th September. Peter Nosworthy won the Mens Singles title for a record eleventh time, overcoming spirited resistance from John Perry, a previous two times winner. After a two hour battle Judi Jennings eventually emerged the winner of the Ladies Singles against Jane Wilson, who then had to go back on court to contest the Ladies Doubles. Unfortunately for Jane and her partner, Wendy Rae, she again finished as runner-up, losing another long three-setter against Jane Mitchell and Andrea Gray, who were both first time winners. So special congratulations to Jane M. and Andrea and thanks to all who made the day so successful and enjoyable. Carolyns barbecue was particularly appreciated! The Mens and Mixed Doubles events will be contested in October.

l Winner Peter Nosworthy on the left with runner-up John Perry and umpire Chris Edwards. l Umpire Rob Millar showing no prejudice whatsoever to winner Judi Jennings (left) and runner-up Jane Wilson. l Winners Jane Mitchell and Andrea Gray on the left, runnersup Jane Wilson and Wendy Rae, with umpire Barry Cooper showing the close third set score of 7-5.

The under 11s and senior team use the indoor hall when the weather is bad. writer in residence on the Richard and Judy Show. The Manager of the Chester Literature Festival, Paul Lavin, said: Were truly excited by the range and depth of this years festival. From poet Wendy Cope to Amazon explorer Ed Stafford, there is something for everyone and we are particularly pleased to be welcoming local Cheshire talent too. Lunchtime readings from local authors will take place at the Wesley Centre in Chester and if you saw the magical Merlin and the Woods of Time this summer in Grosvenor Park, youll know that a discussion with its writer Glyn Maxwell and its director Alex Clifton will throw up some fascinating insights. New sixth formers make a good start

Record numbers have joined Tarporleys Sixth Form. So to kick start the new term and they certainly didnt disappoint us during their induction programme. Designed to build relationships within tutor groups as well as with some of the key staff who work with the Sixth Form, the three days help prepare our students for A Level study by giving them information and skills which will help them to enjoy Sixth Form life and to be successful over the next two years. The activities are scored and the tutor group with the most points at the end of the week is awarded the Conway Challenge Trophy. The activities are all designed to test a range of skills which will prove useful at A Level and beyond. As usual, the students approached every task enthusiastically; they have made an excellent start to their A Level studies.

health & beauty

with Angela Bartlett Q. Im looking to buy an eye cream, what can you recommend? A. You dont mention your age, or what you would like to achieve by using an eye cream, and its difficult to make an individual recommendation without a skin analysis. However, whatever age you are or whatever results you are looking for the single most important thing to look for in an eye cream that you will be wearing during the day is sunscreen. I am always amazed at the amount of skin care ranges that have eye creams with no sunscreen in them! The skin around the eyes is thinner and more delicate than skin anywhere else on your face so protect it all year round with a special eye product that contains sunscreen. Reserve the products without sunscreen for night use only. For top tips on looking after the delicate skin around your eyes visit the newsletter page at www. angelabartlett.co.uk Q. I like having gel nails as they give strength and gloss to my nails, but I cant wear colour on my nails for work. What can you suggest? A. Many of our clients love the fact that they dont have to bother replacing their varnish colour for two to three weeks, but wearing colour is not suitable for everyones lifestyle. For clients like yourself the answer is to have a clear gel applied to give strength and gloss and then just paint them with nail varnish when you want to wear a colour. The varnish can then be removed with a non-acetone varnish remover without affecting the gel underneath. For more tips on how to care for your gel nails at home visit the newsletter page at www.angelabartlett.co.uk

Millies miles without stiles

FoURTEEN-year-old Millie Hawes raised an astounding 29,000 for the SMA Trust by completing a gruelling 80 mile wheelchair marathon across the Lake Districts Miles without Stiles. Millie, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), had to cope with torrential rain, exhausted batteries and, in places, terrain too rugged for many wheelchairs to complete her personal challenge. The hope is that this money will help find a cure for this debilitating condition. Millie was born with SMA, a genetic condition which affects muscle development and has meant she has never been able to walk, stand or even crawl. Despite these obstacles, she was determined to find some physical challenge which would help her raise money to fund research into a cure for other children like her. Having looked at a number of different walks across the UK she found the Lake District National Parks Miles without Stiles, a series of over 40 walks accessible to wheelchair users. Millie therefore set herself the challenge of completing as many of these walks as possible within four days come rain or shine or flat tyres. Tough challenge The SMA Trust is a charity which funds research into Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is a genetic disease which is responsible for taking more lives of babies, toddlers and children than any other inherited condition. Millie, who lives in Alpraham, says: This was a much tougher challenge than I had expected as there were so many steep slopes, boulders and large areas of mud. Driving my wheelchair was virtually impossible at times as I couldnt keep my balance as I was bounced around. I have the bruises to show for it but Im so happy that I have raised so much money for The SMA Trust. Even though I have never walked, I have been lucky because I have always had fantastic wheelchairs, friends and family who have helped me do whatever I have wanted to do. Thousands of other families like mine who live with SMA hope for a cure so we can live a more normal life. I hope that the money I have raised will help the incredible people researching a cure. Support Millie completed her walk in August having walked all but one of the Miles without Stiles routes. On the road by nine each morning and not finishing before 8pm, she racked up around 80 miles over four and a half days using two electric wheelchairs, an endless supply of chocolate and the support of a number of friends and family. You can still sponsor Millie directly by donating online at www.justgiving.com/teammillie or contacting The SMA Trust on 07794 012344

Wine talk
Sparkle

with Gill nicol, from Dee Fine Wine

AT this time of the year as the weather swings from being warm and sunny one day to cold, dark and autumnal the next, its impossible to know what youre going to feel like eating, never mind drinking from one day to another. So its always quite useful to have in three staple wines that are great to have in during this most changeable of months. The wines Ive chosen to recommend here are the three that proved most popular at a recent tasting I taught on wines that are easy to get hold of and easy on the wallet! The first is a Sparkling Crmant de Jura Chardonnay, Philippe Michel from Aldi (6.99). This light, refreshing citrusy fizz is a real bargain for the price and already has numerous awards to its name. It is made by the same method as Champagne, although it is aged for less time so it has a more delicate style. This Crmant is created from grapes grown on the cool slopes of the Jura Mountains on the border of Switzerland and north eastern France. It is perfect as an aperitif, and not so pricey that you couldnt use it with a dash of crme de cassis or if pairing with food, why not try it with a goats cheese salad. Fresh and fruity If youre looking for something a bit different for a white, try the Barossa Valley Semillon (pronounced Sem-ee-on) by Peter Lehman (at the time it was on offer at Tesco for 5.79). Not so well known as the Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay grape, its a perfect inbetween sort of wine. By this I mean it is still fresh and fruity but without the piercing acidity of a Sauvignon and it has a good body to it but no way near that of a creamy oaked Chardonnay. This would be perfect with oriental fish dishes such as sea bass with chili and lime. Warming red And finally a staple red that you cant go wrong with is McGuigans Brothers Black Label red. A bargain for 5.99 from believe it or not, Bargain Booze! A blend of different grape varieties from South Eastern Australia, this a soft, warming red with hints of spice that is perfect for those Friday evenings on the sofa at the end of a tough week. Gill teaches regular wine tasting courses and is the owner of Dee Fine Wine, a wine tasting events company based in the historic city of Chester. www.deefinewine.co.uk.

TARPORLEY Vics First Team has only one win to celebrate from the opening eight league games of the 2011/2012 season. The lengthy injury and non-availability list has meant that both the First Team and the Reserves have had to balance the available players across both teams, with the First Team struggling to match up to quality first division sides such as Gamesley FC & Garswood FC. BOOK NOW FOR AN ENCHANTING CHRISTMAS

Tarporley, Bunbury & District Historical Society

The Society has a very distinguished series of speakers this season, with David Hayns on Thursday 27th October (Castle and Canal through time), followed by the County Archivist, Jonathan Pepler for the Wright Manley sponsored evening on 24th November (Cheshire Maps and Map Makers). We meet on the fourth Thursdays in the month at the Tiverton Village Hall at 7.30 pm, and all are very welcome. The Tarporley, Bunbury & District Historical Society has received a number of queries most of which they have been able to answer. Recently one from a correspondent in Kent has, however, rather stumped them. The attached illustration of an unused postcard appears to be of the Glyndwr Hotel in the 1940 or 1950s. On its back appears the faint impression of Haines Photographers, Tarporley, in purple in one line. The inscription on the postcard is of the Duke of Kents visit but the Prince of Wales feathers are clearly seen. The owner writes that all the record offices in North Wales and Cardiff claim there was no such hotel or royal visit, so it might be over the border. In that case, has it anything to do with Tarporley? Does any reader happen to know anything about it? Any help should be sent to pyoung@care4free.net or 01829 832700, or why not come along to our next meeting in October 27th at Tiverton Village Hall to discuss it, and hear David Hayns presentation of Castle and Canal over time? CAB outreach programme The Citizens Advice Bureau is running an outreach programme at Tarporley Community Centre on the third Wednesday of each month. The next ones take place on Wednesday 19th October and Wednesday 16th November. The CAB is a national charity offering a free, confidential impartial information and advice service. The service can also be contacted by phone or through local offices in Winsford, Northwich and Chester. FlOwering FinAle in OCtOber

tHiS year there is a bumper crop of berries to provide ornamental colour into winter. the spiny Pyracantha shrubs have red, orange and yellow berries aplenty this year so if you want a very thorny hedge with white flowers in spring and berries in autumn consider a mixed hedge with varieties such as Orange glow, red Column and Soleil dOr (golden Sun). Hawthorn trees have red berries and white or pink flowers in early summer. If you want to plant a tree have a look at Crataegus laevigata Pauls Scarlet with deep pink flowers or Crataegus laevigata Rosea Flore Plena with double pink flowers. Flowers that are in season in October include the delicate Cyclamen hederifolium which will flower into winter and look great planted under trees and shrubs that lose their leaves in autumn. They will self seed too bringing you a carpet of white or pink flowers in time. They are ideal for a dryish spot under trees. Chrysanthemums are out in late September

gArdening by JAnet HeAtH

and October. Select hardy varieties that can be grown outside in the border or be prepared to buy new plants each year as many varieties are only half hardy and will not survive the winter if left outside. Buy bulbs of daffodils and tulips and plant in October. Wallflowers and primulas can be planted out this month for colour next year. October is also the time to plant out perennials, evergreen hedging plants and climbers before winter sets in. The soil should still be warm from summer to allow good root growth and also damp from rain enabling them to survive the winter. In the vegetable garden you can probably still plant winter lettuce seeds then cover with a cloche to supply some greens in winter. Lift pieces of mint, thyme and chives and pot up for use indoors when the plants outside die back and sow seeds of parsley to use in cooking. Make sure broccoli and Brussels sprout plants are staked. October is the time for the last cut of the year for the lawn. You can also lay turf provided the soil is moist and there are no frosts likely.

Silver jubilee remembered

THE DIAMoND jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II takes place in June next year. But do you remember the celebrations which took place back in 1977 for the Queens Silver Jubilee? That summer, there were street parties all over the country as jubilee fever swept the nation. Here in Tarporley there were lots of events, as Ernest Boynes recalls. Her Majesty the Queen will celebrate her sixty years of service as Monarch during the weekend of June 2nd to 5th. There will be Diamond Jubilee celebrations in London and throughout the United Kingdom. Those who lived in Tarporley in 1977, when Her Majestys Silver Jubilee was celebrated, will no doubt recall the many wonderful events which took place and in which the whole of the village, it seemed, plus many from outside joined. From 28th May until 4th June Tarporley celebrated its Silver Jubilee Wakes Week in style. Procession The week started on Saturday 28th May with a Peal of Bells by the Bellringers of St. Helens followed by a United Church Service. On Sunday 29th May there was a Clay Pigeon Shoot at Birch Heath Farm. The Tarporley Wakes Walk Procession included the Tarporley Silver Band, The Ancient Order of Foresters, The Royal British Legion, Oddfellows, Tarporley Youth Club, 1st Tarporley Cubs 70 To advertise call 01244 350398 and Scouts, 1st Tarporley Guides and Brownies. On Tuesday there was a Celebrity Cricket Match, Tarporley CC v Alan Oakes XI. In the Community Centre that night there was the Jubilee Stage Show presented by the Tarporley Amateur Dramatic Society together with the Bunbury Masquers. Saturday was Carnival Day with a Grand Float Procession, Miss Tarporley Parade of Carnival Queens, a Fancy Dress Parade, Judo Display by Tarporley Youth Club and much more, including a Pram race, Welly Throwing and Battle of the Sexes. Throughout the week there were competitions of all kinds: Best Shop Window, Flower and Home Produce, Best Back Garden, Best Front Garden, Childrens Arts and Crafts and Adults Arts and Crafts. The list of those taking part in the organisation of this Silver Jubilee event numbered well over 50 and some of those name can be found in the village today. It would appear that Tarporley put a great deal of effort to really celebrate the Silver Jubilee in style. Let us anticipate that Tarporley will rise to the occasion in June 2012. Copies of the Tarporley Silver Jubilee Programme may be viewed in the Public Library at the High School and three have been left with the parish council. What is a Multi - Bed Clinic?

A Multi bed clinic, is where a few people are treated in one large room. Discrete screens are around each treatment area and gowns can be given for privacy. it is possible for Acupuncturist to offer this type of service because Acupuncture needles usually take 20-40 minutes to do their work, so the practitioner can place needles into one patient, leave them to relax into their treatment and move on to the next patient. The initial consultation and first treatment are on a one to one basis in a private consultation room, so all medical details can be taken in privacy, it is then when it is discussed to see if the patient is suitable for the multi bedclinic or a one to one treatment. By treating more than one patient an hour the practitioner can significantly reduce the cost of treatment, ideal for people who may be in need of a lot of treatment and for those who have a limited budget. telephone lynn for more enquires : 07870373545

u3A The Cheshire West and Chester recycling department will be represented to give us a talk and also answer any queries on the subject of recycling. This will be a good opportunity to find out what happens to our household waste!. The meeting will be held at the Barbour Institute Tattenhall, on Thursday 20th October at 2pm. Free refreshments will be available. We look forward to seeing all members and anyone wishing to join may do so at the meeting. Tiverton District garden Club Tuesday 4th October at Tiverton Village Hall, Huxley Lane (just off A49) at 8pm: A new look at Ness a talk and slide show by Mr Paul Cook. Entry 1.50 (members) 2 (visitors), includes raffle and refreshments. All are welcome. Tattenhall gardening society A big thank to everyone (from doorman to cook!) who supported and helped with our Annual Show this year. It would simply be impossible to stage this size of event without the help from friends and families! We are proud to present our exciting programme for the 2011/12 series of talks and visits, starting with Jenny Hendy on Autumn & Winter Containers on Wednesday 12th October at 7.45 pm in the Barbour Institute. Jenny will give you lots of ideas on how to brighten up a dull corner in your garden during the winter months.New members are welcome to join at the October meeting. Membership costs just 10 for single and 15 for joint membership. Bunbury Village gardening show All who came to the Village Hall on the Saturday Bank Holiday experienced a treat for the senses in what was our best show in many years. Despite unpredictable weather and uncertain growing conditions, the Hall was filled with more entries than ever and according to some of our judges the standards of some of the floral classes were worthy of much larger shows. Praise indeed for a village and a lovely occasion for local people and visitors to enjoy and share in a celebration of all that talent, while of course enjoying tea and home-made cakes. Well done Bunbury. The crowd at the prizegiving and a display of flowers in a vase by geoff Fowles, High street Tarporley.

Peckforton & Beeston WI

The September meeting began with a talk entitled Falconry at Peckforton Castle given by Mark Birdsall. The three birds he brought enthralled the audience as they flew them from one end of the hall to the other. We learnt much about feeding and flying habits, eyesight and mating of free and captive birds and Mark was bombarded with many questions from members. Arrangements were finalised for a theatre trip to Stoke to see Legally Blonde. Our next meeting on 5th October will include a presentation from Tom Jones called A Millers Tale.New members are always welcome to meetings at the Peckforton Village Rooms on the first Wednesday of the month starting at 7.30 pm.
