Purpose:KidsDayisanonaireventtoencourageyoungpeople(licensedornot)tohavefunwith
AmateurRadio.Itisdesignedtogiveontheairexperiencetoyoungstersandhopefullyfosterinterest
ingettingalicenseoftheirown.Itisalsointendedtogiveolderhamsachancetosharetheirstation
andloveforAmateurRadiowiththeirchildren.

FieldDayisperhapsthemostpopularofthemanyactivitiesenjoyedbyAmateurs.EveryJunethe
bandscomealivewithimprovisedsignalsprovingtheabilitytorespondtoemergencies.Theeventalso
offersanopportunityforcamaraderieandachancetotestourselvesinlessthanidealcircumstances,
however,emergenciesandnaturaldisastersdon'talwayshappeninthesummer.Winterwinds,icylimbs
andbittercoldreplacethethunderstormsandblisteringheatofsummer.Totestourabilitiestooperate
inthewinter,in2007SPARestablishedaWinterFieldDayeventandinvitedallAmateurRadio
operatorstoparticipate.Theeventwasenjoyedbymanyandconsideredasuccess.Thereforeitistime
toissuetheinvitationfortheSecondAnnualSPARWinterFieldDay!
TheobjectoftheeventisfamiliartomostAmateurRadiooperators:setupemergencystyle
communicationsandmakeasmanycontactsaspossibleduringthe24hourperiod.Therulesencourage
asmanycontactsonasmanybandsandmodesaspossible,becauseduringarealemergency,themost
importantfactoristheabilitytocommunicate,regardlessofband,modeordistance.Theeventisopen
toallamateurs,althoughweencourageeveryonetojoininthediscussionsandotheractivities
sponsoredbySPAR.InformationaboutSPARcanbefoundontheSPARHomePage.Membershipis
freeandopentoallamateurswhowanttoencouragetechnicalandoperatingskills.Youcanregisterby
goingtotheSPARForumandregistering,usingyouramateurcallsignasyourusername.

Aswewinddowninthelastfewweeksof2007andlookforwardto2008weshouldstartthinkingof
NewYearsresolutions.FirstIwouldliketoseeanewgenerationgetinvolvedwiththehobby,
especiallyyoungerpeople.IwouldalsoliketoseethemembershipofRACES/ARESgrowalittlebit.
Publicserviceeventsseemtohavebeenlowinthepast,perhapswecangetmoreinvolvedinthe
communitywithprovidingcommunications.IwouldliketoseeeverymemberorRACES/ARESmake
itonthePublicServiceHonorRollatleastoncein2008.Thiscanbedonebyearningatleast70points
throughtimespenttowardpublicservice,participatinginnetsandmeetings,sendingtraffic,
maintainingaBBSandholdinganARRLsponsoredposition.Iwouldliketoseeusimprove
communicationsforthenextSET.Perhapswecanstartbuildingarapportwithneighboringcounty
RACES/ARESgroups.HappyHolidaystoeveryoneandlookingforwardtoaproductivenewyear.
