The National Council of Education (NCE), Bengal, out of which Jadavpur University was born, was
formally established in the year 1906.

In 1921, Chemical Engineering course was started at Jadavpur University by NCE, Bengal, the first such
course in the whole of Asia, and the precursor of the present Chemical Engineering program at Jadavpur
University.

Ever since then, the Department of Chemical Engineering has had a glorious record for the last nine
decades. It has produced great engineers and thus, contributed immensely to the industry and society in
particular and the country in general.

Being the pioneer, the department feels the necessity to bridge the gap between the needs of industry and
education provided to the budding engineers which has developed because of globalization and fast
modern developments like biotechnology, alternative energy (such as fuel cells) and nano technology.
Also, prevention of environmental pollution has become the central issue. In this scenario, the
organizing committee of the Reunion 2008 of the Department of Chemical Engineering -
CHEMBridge 2008 has planned to organize a host of technical activities, the details of which are
appended at the end of this letter. We would like to add here that some 750 participants including
budding engineers, faculty members, consultants, professionals and policy makers from various parts of
the country will attend the workshop.

The Re-Union committee has planned the following activities:

1. WORKSHOPS :

· Quality of Technical Education in India ± Special Emphasis to Chemical

Engineering

· Prospects of Chemical Hub in India

Guests and Audiences: 500

Expected Dignitaries: Top notch ministers, policy makers, secretaries, renowned

academicians, budding engineers, industrialists. Above all executive directors and directors of
top notch companies will be present in the aforesaid events.

· Addition of fixed assets

· Introduction of state±of±the±art equipment for seminar room

· Generation of corpus for awarding scholarships to needy students of the department
