how do i view exams exported from medview in a dicom format using
medview express?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

when a healthcare facility exports exams from medview in a dicom format,

the medview express viewer is automatically included with the dicom exam
files. when you copy these dicom exam files to any removable device
such as a cd, you can use medview express to view the exported exams
without a dicom viewer or a standard medview installation. when you
open medview express, it automatically displays the exam explorer, which
lists all exams stored on the removable device, such as a cd.

1. to open medview express, use the windows explorer to navigate to

the main folder on the cd where the dicom exam files are stored.

2. to open medview express, double-click the "medview.bat" file.

the medview express viewer opens and displays the exam explorer, which
contains a list of all files stored on the removable device.

3. to open an exam, double-click the exam in the exam explorer.

medview express contains preconfigured preferences when you view

images on a computer with the monitor resolution set to 1024 x 768,
1280 x 1024, and 1600 x 1200. if you use medview express on a computer
with one of these resolution settings, three components display in the
exam window-- the exam content view, the thumbnails view, and the
image workspace.
remember, you can access medview's help system by clicking the help button
on the application toolbar, then, clicking on any item or toolbar button
in medview. you can also select help, medview help from the menu bar and
browse the entire contents of the help system.

are there any known problems or issues running medview express?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

there are a few issues that have been encountered running medview express.

1. medview express has been restricted to run only from removable media
(ex: cd, dvd, or usb flash memory). the software cannot be copied and
executed from a hard drive.

2. medview express is limited to displaying exams stored only on the

removable media where it is running. exams stored elsewhere cannot
be viewed.

3. medview express must install its configuration on the computer when it

runs; therefore, users with restricted permissions on the computer
cannot execute medview express.

4. the default preferences delivered with medview express are not loaded
if medview has been installed or medview express executed on the

understanding the exam content view
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

the exam content view provides an itemized list of an exams contents in

one location for easy access. you can view patient demographics, exam
statistics, image presentations, and original images sent by the modality.
the exam content view available in medview express does not display
reports or related exams for this patient.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
understanding the thumbnails view
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

the thumbnails view displays small thumbnail graphics representing each

image or image series in the exam. these small thumbnails provide a
preview of the exam images and can help you select the images that you
want to view in the image workspace. when an image from the thumbnails
view is displayed in an image workspace, a green box displays around the
thumbnail image to identify that the image is available for review.
a white box displays around thumbnail images that are currently selected
in an image workspace. you will also use the thumbnails view to select
the images that you want to view in the image workspace. for more
information, review the next section called "understanding the image
workspace."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
understanding the image workspace
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

an image workspace is medviews virtual lightbox that you can use to

review images in the patient's exam. medview makes it easy to control the
images displayed in the image workspace with hang modes. click the
following buttons on the image workspace toolbar to apply a hang mode:

* exam mode
exam mode displays all exam images in sequential order in the image
workspace. for example, if an exam has two image series and you select
hang exam, all images in the first series display in the image workspace
followed by all images in the second series. when using the exam hang
mode, all the images for the exam automatically display in the image
workspace and there is no need to click and drag the images from the
thumbnails view to the image workspace.

* series mode
series mode displays all images of a particular series sequentially in the
image workspace. for example, if an exam has two image series and you
select hang series, you can display all images in the series of your
choice in the image workspace. to view another image series, click and
drag a thumbnail from the series of your choice from the thumbnails view
to the image workspace.

* stack mode
in stack mode, all images within a series are organized one on top of the
other so you can view the images in succession like a sequence in a film.
stack mode is often used to view ct and mr images because you can view
multiple series at a time and display reference lines on the corresponding
series. to view another image series, click and drag a thumbnail from the
series of your choice from the thumbnails view to the image workspace.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
how do i scroll through the images in the image workspace?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

* with a wheel mouse, you can scroll the images in the image workspace by
positioning the mouse pointer in the image workspace and rotating the
scroll wheel.

* use the scroll bar below the image workspace to review the images.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
how do i change the number of image panes available in an image workspace?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. click the matrix layout button on the image workspace toolbar.

2. on the popup window, click the left mouse button on a disk to select
the number of rows and columns to display in the image workspace. for
example, if you click the third disk in the fourth column, the image
workspace will contain 3 rows and 4 columns.

tip: to quickly resize an image to the full size of the image workspace,
double-click the image. to return to the former layout, double-click the
resized image.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
how do i zoom images?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

pan/magnify tool

when an image does not fit within its image pane, you can use the
pan/magnify tool to move the image within its pane. to select the
pan/magnify tool, click the pan/magnify image tool button on the image
workspace toolbar. then, move the image by clicking and dragging it so
you can view other areas on the image. to adjust the zoom factor of an
image while using the pan/magnify tool, press and hold the left mouse
button on an image to activate the tool and rotate the scroll wheel.

magnifying glass tool

the magnify image tool is similar to a standard magnifying glass used

with printed film. to use this tool, click the magnify image tool button
on the image workspace toolbar. then, click and hold the mouse pointer
over the image you want to resize.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
how do i adjust the window/level of the images?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

window/level image region tool

with the window/level image region tool, you can automatically set
window/level values for an image based on the grayscale values of a
specific region of that image. to use this tool, click the window/level
image region tool button on the image workspace toolbar. then, draw a
rectangle around the image region containing the portion of the image you
want to view with optimal window level settings. medview automatically
calculates and applies the optimal window settings for the selected image
region.

window/level tool

using the window/level tool, you can adjust the window/level settings of
selected images by clicking and dragging the mouse either vertically or
horizontally. vertical movement alters the window width and horizontal
movement alters the window level.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
how do i measure a distance with the ruler tool?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

using the ruler tool, you can measure the distance between two points on
an image. to use this tool, click the ruler button, then press and hold
the left mouse button with the pointer at the first measurement point.
drag the mouse pointer to the second measurement point and release
the mouse button.
