Provenance
Rod MacKenzie and his wife Mary have been collecting antiques for sixty years. Their antiques shop in Sterling, MA, at the Sign of the Thistle, was a destination for collectors. Rod also taught art in the Clinton, Massachusetts, school system for 25 years, where he is still remembered as an inspirational teacher. While Mary collected early American painted tin treenwear baskets and country paint-decorated furniture, Rods lifetime specialty was early photography, for which he is best known. As his daughter said, it is his identity. As a collector, he has a sophisticated taste for images that speak to us all emotionally, historically, and artistically. This part of the collection includes 150 lots of daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, and tintypes, many in rare hard plastic cases. Rods extensive knowledge of American history, particularly of the Civil War, is represented by dozens of extraordinary images of military officers and soldiers. Rod also collected images of children in school and children with their favorite toys, including a boy with a drum and a girl clutching a chalkware cat. Other rare examples include daguerreotypes of houses from the mid-19th century and a parade. From an artistic standpoint, Rod appreciated images that featured characters with a story to tell: portraits of beautiful, stylishly dressed women; prosperous, optimistic young couples and large family groups; and men shown at their daily occupations. These occupationals include an architect, a blacksmith, a mailman, farmers, musicians, carpenters, and firemen.
