Working Of Photosynthesis
DEFINITION
PHOTOSYNTHESIS(photon=light;
synthesis=putting together) is the most
important anabolic process on earth by which
green Plants synthesize complex carbohydrates
from simple substances like carbondioxide and
water with the help of light energy and purify the
atmospheric air by consuming carbon dioxide
and evolving oxygen.

The
process of
photosynthesis
can also be
defined as the
transformation of
photonic energy
into chemical
energy by the
green parts of the
plants.
EQUATION
The simple overall equation usually
given to represent photosynthesis is as follows:

6 CO2 + 6 H2 O
C6H12O6 + 6O2

IMPORTANCE OF
PHOTOSYNTHESIS

PHotosynthesis is considered the most

important process in the biosphere because
of the following reasons:

1. The process of photosynthesis consumes

atmospheric carbon dioxide and yields
carbohydrates and molecular oxygen.

2. All green plants are called producers because

they synthesize organic food material for living
organisms.
3. Photosynthesis is only natural process that
evolves molecular oxygen for use by other
living organisms.

4. The carbohydrates produced during

photosynthesis are used by plants and animals
to synthesize organic acids,proteins,
harmones, pigments, vitamins,alkaloids and
other metabolites.

5. In addition to organic food , plants yield fodder

, fire wood,timber, fibres, rubber,resins,oils and
many other products of photosynthesis.

6. Fossil fuels ( such as coal , petroleum and

natural gas ) are also products of
photosynthetic organisms which
lived in the remote past some millions of
years ago.

MAGNITUDE OF
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Green plants fix about 70-80 billion tones
of carbon-dioxide annually by the process of
photosynthesis-
CHLOROPLAST
THE SITE OF
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
Chloroplasts ( Chloros = green , plastos =
moulded) are the green plastids which occur in all
the green parts of the plants. They are the actual
sites of photosynthesis. The maximum number of
chloroplasts occur in leaves with over half a
million per square millimeter.

SUN-
LIGHT
MECHANISM OF
PHOTOSYNTHESIS
The process of photosynthesis
completes in two steps –light reaction.Light
reaction is also called photochemical phase
and occurs in thylakoids whereas dark
reaction is called thermochemical phase
and occurs inside the stroma of
chloroplasts.
