8. What is the significance of arranging the elements in groups on the periodic table?

What is the significance of arranging the elements in periods? Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties. Elements are ordered in periods according to increasing atomic number. Within a period the properties of the elements gradually change from one extreme to another. For example, elements on the far left of a period are extremely metallic, those on the far right are extremely non-metallic. As one goes from left to right across a period the elements gradually change from having metallic properties to having non-metallic properties.
