Why 99% of our New faster website seeds are heirlooms after a long development process our new
The Diggers Club pioneered the rescue of heirloom seeds 19 years ago. since then commercial seed companies have concentrated on creating hybrid and genetically modified forms of vegetable seeds because they are vastly more profitable. We rescued this from just one seed! These totally altered seeds confer no consumer benefits but force consumers into buying unlabelled food that needs huge amounts of chemical fertilizer and pesticides and cause massive Co2 pollution. Its not regional, fresh or organic. our garden inheritence of heirloom vegetables developed over hundreds of years suits our needs for better flavour, long harvest and disease resistance. heirloom vegetables are open pollinated and true to type. Seeds Incorporated

Why the type of seed matters

he TomaToes we eat today are the most altered fresh food we serve at the table. The original tomato that arrived in europe 400 years ago, pomodoro (golden apple), has now become large and red and has the highest dissatisfaction rating of any vegetable.

Tim sansom and Lisa Kinsella- Ceos

The heyday of breeding vegetables for gardeners ceased in the 1950s. The financial advantages of hybrid plant breeding for global commerce took over and continues to this day, thats why corporately funded molecular biologists have replaced public plant breeding almost entirely. Using secret hybridisation processes, the highly aromatic soft fruit we grow at home has been transformed into a slow ripening, rock-hard fruit capable of bouncing off the supermarket floor. Bottom line hybrid plant breeding only thrives because its unlabelled.

Caroline Trevorrow Publishing and Club manager

Talei Kenyon, manager education, media and Food

There is no special biological advantage to self-pollinating hybrids such as tomatoes, only a huge transfer of wealth and power to a few multi-national seed companies. When you buy supermarket hybrids you are effectively voting for commercial agriculture, synthetic chemicals and huge Co2 pollution. By displacing home grown heirlooms with hybrids we have lost ownership and control of our seeds. our seeds have become incorporated. so complete is the dominance of multi-nationals that they view the growing of heirlooms from seed that they dont own as a threat. Join the Diggers heirloom movement to not only grow better food for your family but to win back control of our future our seeds. Lets un-incorporate them! Founder, executive Chairman

How to Plant what and when

almost all the vegetables we grow are annuals which are planted as seeds to grow through the correct temperatures to mature and be harvested. The attached map charts the number of weeks over 15C, which we define as the growing period. some crops like tomatoes and watermelons need 17 21 weeks of frostfree weather and wont mature in cold climates like hobart that have only 13 weeks over 15C. however, in Darwin with 52 weeks over 15C, two crops can be harvested! Find your location on the map and compare number of growing weeks for the vegetables you wish to grow. For simplicity we have grouped the 12 temperature zones into 3 groups within our growing guides and sow What When calendar.

Our vegetable selections are almost entirely heirlooms from the rich gardening traditions of Italy, France, America as well as here in Australia. Through years of trialling in our gardens and the backyards of our members, we present the very best heirlooms that have stood the test of time with exceptional flavour, high yields and a long harvest season. The few hybrids we list are marked as F1.

Beans
Whatever you call them French, pole, string, snap or bush beans they all have the same origin and are definitely not just green. Beans are ideal to plant after the hungry coolseason crops of brassicas, as their roots can fix nitrogen to enrich the soil. Climbing beans outcrop bush beans producing three times the yield, but require extra trellising for support.

TA

v1.5-2m, spacing 20cm harvest 11-14 weeks Yield 2-3 cobs per plant There is only one way to experience the true taste of Sweetcorn, and that is to grow your own. Most gardeners want to grow supersweet corn as their sugar levels are higher than heirloom varieties and harvest time is not so critical. Corn needs rich soil and ample water. Sow in blocks of a minimum of 16 plants to assist cob setting. Please note hybrid varieties may be treated with fungicide to protect seed.

Has the highest sugar levels and much slower conversion to starch, hence a long storage life. Maximum sweetness is maintained up to ten days after picking. Seeds will not produce supersweet flavour if they cross pollinate with OP or SE hybrids, so isolate by sowing 10 days later. They require more water to germinate than the SE or OP varieties in order to swell their shrunken kernels.

Cobs have higher sugars and tenderness and can be eaten raw. They do not need to be isolated from traditional corn to avoid cross pollination

melons
It is impossible to buy the rock hard supermarket melons once youve enjoyed the juicy succulent melons the French and Italians live for. We have grown them to full size in our trial gardens at Heronswood picking them from February to April. Melons need plenty of heat to fully ripen and grow best in deep sandy loam that has been enriched with compost or well rotted manure. With an estimated 90% of heirloom melons now lost from cultivation, you can ensure the survival of these treasures by growing them in your garden.

diggers Heirloom Tomatoes

The Diggers Club pioneered the introduction of heirloom tomatoes in 1991 after extensive taste tests and comparison trials comparing supermarket hybrids for yields and length of harvest. (Explained in All About Tomatoesbelow) supermarket hybrids are usually dwarf bushy varieties which are easier to machine harvest and are bred for long-distance shipping. Being dwarf varieties they are invariably low in flavour with short harvest periods. The tasty long-harvest period heirloom tomatoes are indeterminate, with lateral branches that continue to grow and therefore need support. The seeds from these heirloom tomatoes bred in back yards over hundreds of years hold a continuous unbroken link to our history.

Cherry Tomatoes
Cherry and apricot sized sweet tomatoes are ideal for salads or to pop straight into your mouth.

Green manures
Soil is at the root of nearly all gardening problems. Gardeners who neglect what happens beneath the surface of the soil are invariably disappointed with the development of the foliage, the formation of fruit and the eventual harvest. It is the soil that provides and assists plants with their nutrient uptake, and holds the water and air that plants need to thrive. Sowing a green manure crop is an easy, inexpensive, and low maintenance way of improving the health of the soil. These crops have many benefits. Green Manures not only increase the organic content of the soil, but add valuable nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus. They provide an organic mulch that suppresses weeds and improves the soils ability to hold water. DIG IN AS FLOWERING BEGINS

Clever Clover Kit

This clever kit developed by the CsIRo contains clover, mustard and lucerne; all the green manure crops you need for a healthy garden. 2. sow large seed evenly spaced

at final spacing

This is the simplest method to germinate vegetable seed. all root crops should be sown using this method to eliminate disturbance that can cause misshapen roots. Begin by removing all weeds and preparing the soil. Break up any big clumps and incorporate some well rotted organic matter or blood and bone. spread this evenly through the soil. Be particularly careful not to let small seed dry out in the first 10 days (until you see some green leaves).

a useful technique is to use shade cloth or hessian to keep the sun off and prevent drying out, but make sure this is removed after the seeds have germinated. seeds that can be sown successfully with the direct method include beans, peas, lettuce, pumpkin, carrot, onions, beetroot and large flower seeds like nasturtium, Californian poppy, sunflower etc..
