KPLA FOUNDING FATHER SET TO RETIRE!
After more than 30 years of distinguished and path breaking service in Kaiser Permanente at local, regional, and national levels, Mario Castaneda will retire in February 2011 as the enterprises first National Director of Clinical Technology. Recently elected President of the American College of Clinical Engineering, Mario plans to put his decades of experience to work in national leadership of the Clinical Engineering profession and in international consulting to Ministries of Health and international healthcare organizations, such as the World Health Organization, where his counsel has been increasingly sought in recent years in developing nation-scale healthcare systems. Marios work at KP spans the history of modern biomedical devices and systems. He was a charter member of the National Biomedical Leadership Team, organized the Biomedical Device Steering Committee, and most recently worked closely with The Permanente Medical Group and KPIT leadership to charter the Biomedical Device Integration Council, which coordinates technical and process integration activities as more clinical technologies become networked and connected to the KP HealthConnect medical record system. Mario has also been active in numerous professional associations, including the International Society for health Technology Assessment, and the Association of Hispanic MBA and Hispanic Engineers. He served as Board Member of the Association of Hispanic Healthcare Executives, was an officer of the National Hispanic Employee Association and was cofounder and first elected President of KPLA.

2010 BUSINESS PROFESSIONAL OF THE YEAR


Congratulations to SRF Diversity, Linguistic & ADA Services DirectorBerta Alicia Bejarano, honored as the 2010 Business professional of the Year by the San Rafael Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Bejarano was recognized during the chambers annual Christmas La Posada and Community Awards Celebration in December. She joined Kaiser Permanente San Rafael in 2006, overseeing such programs as SRFs Qualified Bilingual Services, the language services and access program, culturally competent care and CLAS Standards and Diversity Council. Before stepping up to the KPLA Presidents plate in 2010, Berta was the NCAL KPLA Vice President. Berta values hard work, great friendships and a sense of humor in all aspects of her life. Felicidades!

NCAL KPLA SERVICE AWARDS DINNER AND ANNUAL OFFICERS RETREAT


NCAL KPLA will host the annual Service Awards Dinner at 6 p.m. on March 18, 2011 at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, San Rafael. The annual officers retreat will take place the following day, March 19 at the San Rafael Medical Center from 8:30 a.m.-4:00 p.m. Guest speaker for the retreat will be Frank Carbajal, Founder, Es Tiempo, LLC , author of Building the Latino Future: Success Stories for the Next Generation, and El Futuro Latino. Steven Province, Director Supply Chain, Fresno KP will once again facilitate the retreats activities. Qualifying KPLA chapter officers (such as President/VicePresident) traveling more than 20 miles away (from the Four Points Sheraton in San Rafael), attending both the Friday event as well as the all day Saturday officer retreat need to send your hotel room reservation request as soon as possible to Berta Bejarano. The NCAL KPLA Executive Board cordially invites you to nominate a KPLA member in your service area for the KPLA 2011 Service Award. KPLA 2011 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATIONS COMING SOON


KPLA Proudly announces the launch of our 2011 Scholarship Applications. The Scholarship Program coordinated by Antonio Wong, will be posting applications during the first week of March of 2011. The application deadline will be May 3, 2011. The results will be announced the end of June or mid July. CHICANA LATINA FOUNDATION (CLF) SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PROCESS

CLF will award at least 30 merit-based scholarships of $1500 each. The CLF scholarship fund assists Latina students in completing their undergraduate and graduate college education.
