Dinner is provided and then each family is engaged in a learning activity with their child/children. First grade teacher Tania Doolin provides math packets for parents and their children to work with. She said by the end of the year, a kindergarten child should be able to count to 80 in 1 minute and a first grader should count to 118. She asked parents to listen as their child counts as she timed them for 1 minute. There are several other math skills that Ms. Doolin states the goals and times as the parents work with their child. Students are proud to perform for their parents. Teachers work to help understand and achieve expected goals.
St. Joseph School Celebrates 100 Years

St. Joseph School celebrated 100 years of Catholic Education in September with a re-dedication of the original school building constructed in 1911. Guests included representatives from the Chamber of Commerce and Ann Blair Thornton, Miss Kentucky 2011. Afterwards, there was a preview of a special alumni video and presentation by Miss Kentucky, a St. Joseph alumna. Throughout the day everyone enjoyed activities reminiscent of 100 years ago. They ate sack lunches, had an ice cream social, played games, and had service projects all based around 100. St. Joes archivist, Bonnie Gibson, presented a special display of school artifacts, early photographs and memorabilia. Classes are preparing items to be placed in a time capsule which will be sealed at the end of this year.

McNeill implemented the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Kids program last year and held 8 Leadership Luncheons which highlighted students from each class, along with various Community Leaders each month. Due to its implementation success, McNeill has now been designated as a Lighthouse School for the 7 Habits initiative.
McNeills First Jr. Beta Club

McNeills Jr. Beta Club formed with 35 inaugural members last year. They competed and placed top 5 at both the State & National Conventions and completed a service project where they collected over 1100 books and $500 to create a public school library in Swaziland, South Africa.

Kids on the Block...
Kids on the Block Turns 25 Years Old

On November 19, 2010, South Central Kentucky Kids on the Block celebrated their 25th birthday with a great big birthday party. Kids on the Block, Inc. originated in 1977 as a direct response to US Public Law 94/142, that required children with disabilities be educated in the least restrictive environment. In 1984, Jamie Gaddie Higgins attended a Spina Bifida Association meeting in Nashville where a troupe of Kids on the Block puppets performed. She was so impressed that she returned to Bowling Green and was determined to see Kids on the Block become part of our community. She approached her friend, Alice Kummer, with the idea. Jamies enthusiasm prompted Alice, president of Parents of Children with Learning Disabilities, to bring the Nashville Kids on the Block here for school performances. After seeing them, Alice agreed to talk with the BG Womans Club who agreed to raise funds to start Bowling Greens Kids on the Block. So BG Kids on the Block was born with Jamie being the first puppeteer. Jamies last performance was in February 1997, and in December 1998, Kids on the Block puppeteers lost their dear friend. For ten years, Mrs. Kummer ran KOB from her home, but in 1996, was able to move the organization to an office building with adequate space for training and puppet storage. They hired their first Executive Director to assist with fundraising. For their 25th birthday party, they had a contest to see which school could raise the most money. The winner of the contest was awarded the opportunity to have the Kids on the Block birthday party at their school. The school that raised the most money was Briarwood Elementary. Jamie would be so proud to see how Kids on the Block has grown and how many thousands of children and adults have seen the performances!

Dear Classified Guys, I've been apartment hunting for a few weeks now. The apartments that I saw have been, shall we say, slightly less desirable than their ads. One advertised, "water views". But when I got there, I found that "water view" meant the balcony overlooked the neighbor's pool. Worse yet, the neighbor liked to sunbathe in the nudeand he wasn't an attractive man! Do newspapers police their classifieds for these types of ads or are we readers on our own?

To many of us, those words translate into a place too small to accommodate the family when they visit. Cash: Although for a lot of people, there's no apartment large enough for when family drops in. Carry: To protect their reputation, newspapers may turn down ads they feel
are not beneficial to the readers. However, they can't police everything. Cash: Much of the time, they rely on the feedback of their readers. If you are finding that classified ads are consistently misrepresented, then you can always let them know. Carry: It sounds like your best chance to improve your apartment hunting is to ask a lot more questions on the telephone before you visit. Question exactly what the owner means by "water views" or ask about the square footage, room sizes, or amenities. Cash: The more you know up front, the less there is to shock you when you meet the neighbors.

Would you like a discount on your rent? If so, try this technique next time you're signing a lease. Offer to pay your rent check a month in advance if the landlord will knock off a few bucks. You can also offer to do a few odd jobs around the grounds like mowing the lawn, shoveling snow, watering or planting flowers. Offer to be a helpful tenant and the landlord may be willing to help you out as well.
