Emefecy is an Israeli based, venture backed water technology start-up founded be serial water entrepreneurs, Eytan Levy and Ronan Shechter. The lead VC investor is Pond Ventures. The company has developed a market ready microbial fuel cell / bio-electrochemical treatment technology aimed at the industrial wastewater treatment market. 2.1 WhaT is iT?

Electrogenic bioreactors (EBR) use electrogenic bacteria that, while breaking down organic matter, release electrons (to the anode upon which they are growing) and protons. The result is the generation of either electricity or products such as hydrogen and an increased destruction of organic matter leading to less sludge than typical in biological waste treatment.

Primary advantage of Megawatter over other EBR technologies is the use of low cost electrode materials to decrease CAPEX. Other advantages of their design include: Scalable Modular Customizable Can be installed in as retrofit Practical design Integrated power management system

While most companies working on EBR technologies are focusing on increasing the electrical energy generation per square metre, Emefcy has focused on lowering the cost of the materials in their systems and a practical design for implementation in wastewater treatment plants.

BlueTech Tracker Company Profile Report

Emefcy is targeting industrial wastewater treatment plants with where the influent is not suitable for anaerobic digestion (due to salinity or sulphide content) which Megawatter can handle. The alternative to anaerobic digestion aerobic digestion that might otherwise be used is energy intensive giving a clear advantage to the Megawatter systems.

3.0 markeT sTraTegy

The target market is high strength organic wastewater, which is not suitable for anaerobic digestion due to high salinity, high sulphate or highly variable characteristics. The MegaWatter Process can cope with high salinities and provides a cost effective alternative to aerobic treatment due to lower energy costs, potential net energy generation, and lower sludge production. Specific industrial wastewater treatment applications that this is suitable for include: Pulp and paper plants Petrochemical processing Food and Beverage Agricultural wastewater (swine and dairy farms)

6.0 compeTiTive analysis

Emefcy appear to be the first company to take EBR technology to market. There are several competitors including Hy-SyEnce, IntAct Labs, and Trophos Energy. These competitors all appear to be behind Emefcy in terms of commercialization. Another competitor, Bilexys appear to be slightly behind Emefcy in terms of commercialization but they focus their Bio-electrochemical system on producing products such as caustic sodas and hydrogen peroxide. A start-up out of Cornell University, 6 Convert, is also working towards commercialising a microbial fuel cell technology.

The track record of the team is impressive (they founded AqWise) and the recent VC funding will enable the company to forge ahead with implementation of its business strategy.
