While relations between Israel and Turkey have been undeniably strained during the past several months, their shared concern over the ruthless behaviour of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad has prompted the two countries to set aside their political differences at least temporarily to send a strong message: its time for regime change. Turkey announced that it is conducting nine days of military exercises along its southern border with Syria effective October 5th. The timing of this move is not coincidental. Turkeys Prime Minister Recap Erdogan promptly ordered it after loudly complaining and condemning Russia and Chinas UN veto against taking any action concerning Syria. We believe the Security Council abrogated its responsibility yesterday. The countries that chose to veto the resolution (China and Russia) will have to offer their own explanation to the Syrian people, US. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said at a press conference in the Dominican Republic. The Syrian people will not forget. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon echoed Clintons words, adding that the international community has a moral obligation to stop the crackdown against peaceful citizens in Syria. Erdogan said Turkey will impose its own sanctions against Syria. In a similar move, Israel held military readiness drills and called up two reserve divisions of its defence forces. Israel activated units in its central and northern regions, close to Syrias border. Alarmed at the simultaneous military exercises, Syrian dictator Assad sent a terse message to Jordans King Hussein, warning him not to begin conducting similar moves.

Assad not only cautioned Hussein, he openly threatened to bomb Jordanian towns if the Hashemite Kingdoms military went on manoeuvres. Earlier, on October 4th, Assad said he would attack Tel Aviv and destroy it using missiles within six hours if Israel, Turkey or NATO invaded. 1.0v1 Oct 9, 2011 Kal K.
