INK INDUSTRY
Introduction
The art of writing is believed to have the invention of ink by almost thousand years. Ink was discovered by the ancient Egyptians as early as 2500 B.C. The invention of solid ink blocks and pellets of type similar to Indian ink was made during 220 to 419 A.D. The quality of ancient Chinese or Indian ink depended mainly upon the grade of lamp black used in its manufacture. The invention of printing during sixteenth century, resulted in an enormous increase in the consumption of ink. Ink making has become an art of highest order and of profound importance, since Chinese discovered something connected with writing and printing. The early carbon inks have now been largely replaced by iron salts. Besides its use in writing and printing now-a-days it is largely used in many other fields also. Inks made on home scale industry is mainly utilized for local consumption. The raw materials for ink industry are easily available in India. Properties and Characteristics : Writing ink is a fluid or a viscous medium. It may be a dye solution, a pigment suspension, or a mixture of solution and a suspension of coloured substances in a suitable vehicle. A good preparation of ink should have the properties such as depth of colour, freedom to flow, durability and indelibility. Uses and Applications: The main uses of inks are in writing and printing. Besides these it is used in many other fields like photostating, typewriting, etc. Market Survey: The present day ink industry is very old, relatively small and highly competitive. The exact composition of the product is manufacturers secret. Ink produced on home scale industry is mainly used for local consumption. With all efforts made by the government to enhance the standard of literacy in our country and to bring more and more people under this programme, particularly with the launching out of massive adult education programme, requirement of inks is increasing day by day. Considering the vastness of this Ink Industry country and its ever increasing population, quantum of requirement of this item is really enormous. Moreover, with the manifold increase in activities in the field of construction and industry requirement is also increasing. Hence there is a good scope for marketing this item. This industry has a very good export potential too. Ink is being mainly exported to Nepal, Kenya, Srilanka, Afganistan, etc. FORMULATIONS Fountain Pen Inks Formulation 1 (Blue Black Ink) Tannic acid 15 Gallic acid 4 Ferrous sulphate 15 Hydrachloric acid 12 Carbolic acid 1 Distilled water to make 1 litre Ink blue dye 4 Formulation 2 (Blue Black Ink) Gallic acid 10 Ferrous sulphate 15 Tartaric acid 2 Phenol 2 Ink blue acid dye 7 Ethylene glycol 60 cc Acetone 50 cc Distilled water 1000 cc Black Colour 1.
