Adiga makes
Chennai proud
O n Tuesday evening, when a motley
group of book enthusiasts gathered
at British Council for a review of the
short-listed winners of the Man Booker
Prize 2008, Aravind Adiga was the dark
horse for a majority of them. In fact, for
FREE CIRCULATION Vol. 2 No. 198 the ‘Guess the Booker Winner’ contest,
which the library has been running for
over a week, only 18 people had voted
for Adiga. This, out of the 160-odd votes
cast. Was it a mere guess or had the
voters actually read the book to have
voted him their favourite is not clear.
However, for the judges of this
prestigious literary award, who
announced their decision in the wee
hours of Wednesday, the 33-year-old
Mumbai-based journalist was a favourite.
Adiga’s debut novel, The White Tiger, was
described as a “perfect novel” by the
judges, thus declaring him winner of the
prestigious Man Booker Prize for Fiction
for 2008.
Far away from all the joyous greetings
the writer has been getting was the
happiness of Chennaiites. Apparently, the
author was born in Chennai in 1974, later
moving to Mangalore and Australia. A
majority of the publishing houses and
writers we contacted were not aware who
this overnight hero from Chennai is. Fame
doesn’t reach all corners, obviously.

Say no to nose
After shedding his cap, singer
turned actor Himesh Reshammiya
has now done away with his nasal
twanged singing style in his new
film Karzzzz.
All is not lost, yet
“Yes, the song ‘Ek Haseena Thi’ is
the first song I have sung without
any nasal twang. Since it was a
Kishore Kumar song, I did not
change its style,” Himesh told PTI.
“Normally, I sing songs in high
octave. That gives it a nasal twang,
but for this song, I sang in medium
octave,” he explains.
Karzzzz, a remake of Subhash Ghai’s 1980
blockbuster Karz is scheduled for release
this Friday.
