cd (Change Directory) is a command used to switch directories in MS-DOS.

For
example, if you needed to run Windows 3.11 from DOS, you would type:

The dir command allows you to see the available files in the current and/or parent
directories.

Copy Allows the user to copy one or more files to an alternate location.

Del is a command used to delete files from the computer.

Edit allows a user to view, create and or modify their computer files.

Used to rename files and directories from the original name to a new name.

In earlier releases of MS-DOS instead of using ren or rename you need to use the move
command to rename your MS-DOS directories or files.

deltree Short for delete tree, deltree is a command used to delete files and directories
permanently from the computer.

cls is a command that allows a user to clear the complete contents of the screen and leave
only a prompt.

format is used to erase all of the information off of a computer diskette or fixed drive.

fdisk is one of the more commonly used MS-DOS commands, even today with Windows
95 and Windows 98. Fdisk allows the user to delete and/or create partitions on the hard
disk drive.

xcopy is a powerful version of the copy command with additional features; has the
capability of moving files, directories, and even whole drives from one location to
another.

net command is used to update, fix, or view the network or network settings. Listed in the
Syntax we have listed each of net commands. For additional information and examples,
see our Syntax section.

Defines functions that change display graphics, control cursor movement, and reassign
keys. The ANSI.SYS device driver supports ANSI terminal emulation of escape
sequences to control your system's screen and keyboard. An ANSI escape sequence is a
sequence of ASCII characters, the first two of which are the escape character (1Bh) and
the left-bracket character (5Bh). The character or characters following the escape and
left-bracket characters specify an alphanumeric code that controls a keyboard or display
function. ANSI escape sequences distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters;
for example, "A" and "a" have completely different meanings.

the network and assists in resolving them

arp Displays, adds, and removes arp information from network devices.

assign ntroduced with MS-DOS 2.0 and has been available up to 6.0 where it was
removed because of concern with data issues. Was latter made available on the MS-DOS
6.0, 6.2 and 6.22 supplemental disks. The assign command redirects disk operation on
one drive to a different drive.

The assoc command displays the file association for each of the different file extensions
on the computer.

attrib

Attrib allows a user to change the properties of a specified file. Using attrib, the user has
the capability of changing the file to have any of the below attributes.

batch

The batch command is a recovery console command that executes a series of commands
within a file.

backup

MS-DOS application that enables users to backup their data on their computer.
The bootcfg command is a recovery console command that enables a user to rebuild,
view, and otherwise make changes to the boot.ini file.

break

Break can be used to enable or disable the breaking capability of the computer. For
example, if a user wanted to cancel a batch file or another MS-DOS processes, that user
could simply press CTRL + C (break), which would then prompt the user if they wish to
cancel the current process.

cacls

The cacls command enables a user to view and modify the ACLs of a file.

call

Enables a user to execute a batch file from within another batch file.

goto

Moves a batch file to a specific label or location.

label

Label is used to view or change the label of the computer disk drives.

find

Allows you to search for text within a file. Although MS-DOS itself is not case sensitive,
when typing in the string that you are looking for with the find command, it is case
sensitive.

Additionally, this command is used to find text within a file, not the actual file itself. If
you are wanting to search or find a file with a particular name, use the dir command.

ixboot
The fixboot command is a recovery console command that creates a new partition boot
sector.

fixmbr

The fixmbr command is a recovery console command that creates a new boot record.

keyb

Keyb is used to change the layout of the keyboard used for different countries.

ipconfig

Ipconfig is a DOS utility which can be used from MS-DOS and a MS-DOS shell to
display the network settings currently assigned and given by a network. This command
can be utilized to verify a network connection as well as to verify your network settings.
