Lund Debate Society Debate 1 Autumn Semester 2011 Summary Debate 1 is the foundational module for learning how

to engage in academic and competitive discourse which constitutes studying how to explain and engage in scholarly ideas in a persuasive manner. This is why this module focuses on skills training as well knowledge accumulation on a selection of topics. Included in this course are basic lectures on the rules and positions in British Parliamentary debates, the current European standard of debating as well as learning how to construct arguments and refutation of ideas and how to express them effectively; analytical methods in deconstructing academic articles and a basic selection of topics commonly found in tournaments will be taken up. The first hour will be a lecture on the topic and the next two hours are debate activities. Objectives 1. To be more actively engaged in public discourse. 2. To master the basic roles and positions in competitive debating. 3. To attain foundational knowledge of a selection of basic debate topics. 4. To improve facility with the English language. 5.
